On 10/29/2013, a caller going by the name of 'Big Ern' called in to defend Derrick Rose's statement that this is probably the best Bulls team he has been on. Like most callers, he defended his point very poorly, finally resorting to ad hominem attacks before disconnecting the call.

But one quote from Bernstein has stuck with me:

"Most NBA players are idiots."

Not only did Bernstein commit a logical fallacy of making a hasty generalization, where one applies an inadequate sample size to a larger group, but by his own worldly narratives one has to wonder what factor race played into his quote. In that, the majority of NBA players are also black.

Now, one can simply dismiss this argument by making the claim that NBA players ARE idiots, regardless of their race. But this doesn't fly with Bernstein. This is the same Bernstein who tried to spin the Brian McCann "Baseball Sheriff" idiocy into a racial one by suggesting that McCann might have only pulled that crap because he got in the face of a non-white player. This is the same Bernstein who once called a caller a racist because the caller suggested that most NFL players that come from poorer neighborhoods are statistically more likely to commit crimes (which, statistically, is actually true, but poverty plays a much larger role than race).

So here is my suggestion: Bernstein made that comment because the majority of NBA players are black and most coaches are white. He believes that the white man has to tell the black man what to do, and the black man has to shut his mind off and "just go out and play" (Bernstein's own words).

Not only does he completely dismiss the fact that playing the NBA takes much more than athleticism. Players have to understand a multitude of plays and information and must be able to recognize developing plays within fractions of a second; failure to do so results in them getting beat off the dribble, getting screened, and so forth. NBA teams usually win because they have the best players. But being the "best" player, in any league, goes far beyond just being a terrific athlete.

In conclusion: Dan Bernstein is a racist, and just completely exposed himself as one.

Yeah, Dan is weird in that he'll call all NBA players idiots but then breathe heavily about how they practice lay-ups so they can feed their families and then go drink coffee and check mail in their "office." I guess his synthesis here is that big tall black guys are people just like you and me, they're just really stupid people.

When Dan uses the term "idiot", it is synonymous with "human being". Meaning, he thinks just about everyone is an idiot especially in relation to his perceived level of intelligence. Just look at their generalizations about Southerners, Cardinal fans, every caller, etc.

Like I tried to tell Larry and Goff, it's not only the guys with Chicago accents that are racist. Highly educated, well spoken people can be racist as well.

You need to be careful when labeling someone a racist. That is a very strong term with a lot of implications. If you used the word prejudiced, I would be more inclined to agree. Racist, to me, is someone with a more active dislike of certain races along with a sense that one race is inherently superior to another. Well, come to think of it, maybe he is a.....

Hoping someone else remembers this, but I remember how when they were going after Patrick Kane for one drunken fuckup or another, Dan was talking about what a perfect gentleman Derrick Rose is and how he'd rather have someone like Derrick Rose show up to take his daughter on a date one day than someone like Patrick Kane. Of course, I'm reasonably certain that no one who looks like Derrick nor anyone named "Patrick" is ever making it to that doorstep.
