OK, let's brainstorm and come up with the best segments of the week. Any nominations? Hub? Matt Bowen? That other football guy? Martellus?

Their Hall of Fame of Anything takes the cake for worst segment they've ever done.

None of their segments are that great. The show is at it's best when they are discussing random topics and being goofy.

Martellus bit has even gotten uncomfortable and a waste of time.

Quote of the year is good but like all of the "contests" it is overproduced.

For ongoing bits, I like it when they play the prerecorded Russ Mitera announcements -- "Breaking News: Cubs name Ryne Sandberg as their next manager" -- those are usually pretty funny, but it requires Mitera to have recorded them. "Breaking News: Jay Cutler traded"

Tournament of Bad is pretty funny.

Still annoyed they ruined the quote of the year show 2(?) years ago with Sandusky talk.

I'd probably say Friday Fung is the best. "Ask Us Anything" is the best of the Friday Fung.

I've never actually heard the "ask U anything"...any REAL GOOD questions asked in the past and did they at least seem to answer them honestly?

Best:
Tournament of Bad
Friday Fung if it's a good topic
Who Ya Crappin'
Sit 'Em or Bench 'Em :p

Worst:
Martellus. My god, that is the absolute worst. It was funny once and brutal every time thereafter.
Bob from Niles. Again, it was funny at first. It was played out a while ago.

Even though it certainly had its misses and its bad recurring themes (I've never found Sports Apologies funny), reducing Friday Fung from a weekly feature to every now and then between football season and baseball season has really diminished the show. For such a simple premise -- everyone tell stories to make one another laugh -- it was one of the things that, in my mind, at least, set the show off from typical sports radio and made it feel special. Now that time is generally spent talking to Matt Bowen.

woops i fucked up my original post that basically said i loved second hand news / high noon / the second half because it featured b&b riffing on topics in a rapid fire manner which didn't allow them to dwell and get preachy.

and then i bemoaned the change from the 2nd half having that triumphant NFL films background music form the classic football films every day into the tannehill-era MARK GROTE DANCE PARTY!!! where they'd play some cheesy techno variety randing from haddaway to cnc music factory back to the vengaboys and etc etc.

radio, moreso than television and especially the internet what with its cafeteria style of allowing you to pick and choose specific bits of media when you want. is a medium that lends itself to daily ritual and repetition. that's the name of the game... especially talk radio, they want you in that mindset where you "hang out with" your radio host all show long, as opposed to saying "ok dan's made 5 new hourlong podcasts on various subjects download them at your convenience" and advertisers know that and hence that's why sports talk flourishes... they wanna be ingrained in people's daily rituals.

now lemme take my soon-to-be-legendary addendum, which somehow masqueraded as an edit, and let's blow this all to hell with the hardest-to-read sini post ever of all time.

The problem with Friday Fung is the same problem that ruins WYC. Few people get the actual point of the segment. The callers just get more and more stupid as the years go by.

On Daredevil or Dumbass you'll get some guy calling in to say that him and his friends used to light off roman candles on the 4th of July and one year one of them exploded off his buddies pinky finger. Ask us Anything is 5 guys asking where Damaneal came from and 4 guys asking what By Cracky means.

Second Half is just Pardon The Interruption, more or less, but I like it, too. I'm fine with not using "Round Up" anymore because my god, that same song every single day, enough. Conversely, I'm sad that they've 95% phased out the cheesy "Boers! and Bernstein!" jingle at the top of every hour in favor of slick produced intros that consist of repeating the guest's name a thousand times, or the one that's basically the Mully & Hanley intro but with different hosts yelling about inconsequential bullshit.

Yeah, there were people who wouldn't get a Friday Fung premise, but sometimes it would be fun to hear a segment death-spiral from "Tales of Laziness" to "Tales of Being A Negligent Parent Whose Children Should Be Seized By The State," and having Dan note the devolution as such. And then there was The Jim Nantz Sports Time Machine, and the less said about that, the better, but just the fact that Dan even tried it on this crowd (well, that crowd; with the new generation of hyperliterate buttmunches he has now, it would undoubtedly be a rousing success) was hysterical. Still, lots of segments were always winners: Mundane Sports Achievements, Dumb Arguments, Live Ringers, and any of the holiday stuff.

The few times when Matty and Boers riff with each other and Bernstein doesn't contribute I enjoy immensely. They have great chemistry.

You are 100% right.

Football Fridays are basically 24 straight hours of Bears talk. I don't understand why they can't spare half an hour for a fun segment.

Maybe sponsors pay more on Football Fridays though.

It seemed like half the stories involved dark-ages Blackhawks playing out of position.

"We were playing rat hockey at the Polar Dome one day and then this guy came out of nowhere and scored like eight goals in one game. Figures, though; it turned out it was Steve Passmore."

"Our goalie was hung over so we found this guy in the lobby and asked him to suit up. Had a shutout for us. It was only a week later that I found out that goalie was Steve Poapst."

CH nails it again. This is the best segment this show has ever done.

WYC's salad days were the Heavy Fuel Crew days. FF is B&B's signature segment and they tend to ignore that fact.

I believe Mac has said that WYC should have been retired 5 or 6 years ago.
