Ratings suck, they can't get any players on the show, make fun of callers. Whoever is running the score must like suckness

Mitch Trestmen is growing his radio, growing his hosts to develop and sharpen their radio tools. Your observations he hasn't heard as he isn't the radio station manager but manages a radio station.

He's afraid of Bernstein (everyone is) who's his boss.

Please tell me that last part was a dig at Jauron separate from the digs at Trestman and that Trestman didn't actually say something to the effect of "I'm not a football coach, but I coach a football team" because that would seal it.

I would attribute B&B's longevity to metrics showing their listeners are educated professionals, which helps sales, and the fact that Dan is an ace at picking his targets with the utmost discretion (when you do this as a child, the preferred term is "bullying") and as such avoid generating any real controversy that might make life difficult for management. They do their thing and it's good enough. Roe Conn was allowed to do "good enough" for about ten years until new bean-counters came in and wanted his contract off the books. I suppose that will be the fate of this show too.
