On the backchannel negotiations for the Cubs to get Joe Maddon:

"Nobody involved in this is stupid. Everyone involved in this is smart."

There is no Plan B.

Absolutely. Dan said everyone involved in the Chicago Cubs' tampering is smart.

From my thread, which has been deleted.

Let's be clear here. They are doing everything they can to treat the actual manager of the Cubs with respect, all the while throwing themselves at Joe Maddon like a single girl at a bar on Valentine's Day.

Seems as if I heard this back channel Cubs manager stuff before?

All of this aside ... if/when Maddon shows up for a press conference in a Cubs hat, with another manager already being paid (albeit not a fortune), does that start to indicate that Ricketts isn't an absolutely miser? I mean, somebody only interested in owning the Cubs to not spend money doesn't run out to spend money.

It would seem to me it would be enough of an indicator to be able to shut down the idiot talk about the Cubs aren't ever going to spend money to contend ... unless somebody is going to try to contrive a storyline in which it's all a great ruse to keep fans interested by poaching a sitting manager from an AL team as a smokescreen to not signing big money talent when the time is appropriate.

Anyone catch terry claiming he called his cubs guys last night?

DB: "Oh you did"
TB: "Yes, I called him and he said,,,,well I left him a message and he called me back with a text and just said Yes"
DB:"really?"
TB: "Yes, he knew the question I had for him and he just said yes when I talked to him"

did some searching and I found Terrys cub Guy!

Total payroll matters, and it should be top 5.

Paying a guy equal to Kyuji Fujikawa doesn't exactly prove anything.

It has not mattered until perhaps next season ... 2016 for certain ... at least that's where I've been with it since this all started.

As far as the docking pay ... yeah, that's one of the dumbest things I've heard so far ... I don't think they can just dock his pay like the poor chink that passed out in Blazing Saddles.

Good point. Also, he's not gonna take another position. He'll leave and they'll pay him his last 2 years of his contract. HE WANTS TO BE A MANAGER. Not some advanced scout or whatever they'd have him do. Do right by him? Not too much doc in pay? What? Bernstein is stupid.

Nobody would stay a team that fired them as a manager. That would just be humiliating to that person. Who wouldn't just take two years of salary and leave?

Dan exposed once again. Not only does he have a guaranteed contract, he has a guaranteed contract to be a field manager. They cannot demote him to say, clubhouse attendant in the hopes that he breaks his end of the contract and they don't have to pay him.

Like I said, if Renteria accepts this he has no dignity unless they did something like double his salary

These two guys are more delusional than any Cubs fans, and one is supposedly a Sox fan and the other is supposedly a Rays fan.

It's obvious what the Cubs are doing to Ricky, and how they aren't treating him "well", to pretty much everyone. He'll console himself with the millions of dollars he'll get for doing nothing but if you asked Ricky right now what he would want it would be "Be the Cubs coach for the length of my contract".

He won't accept it. He'll take his two years of salary and try to be a manager some where else. He'll get a bench coach job right away probably.

The bigger question for a major Cub fan like bernstein should be, what do you do when they fail under Maddon?

Would Bernstein have accepted a paycut and demotion if Dan McNeil were given a show with Boers?

Why not? It's a semi-lateral move.
