Rosie today. Bernstein and Boers all week. I'm sure the rest of the whites at the SCORE were doing the same. Granted, Larry said the same thing. But that's only because he's gonna say whatever Bernstein says on all issues.

It struck me as disturbing. These middle aged white guys. Most of them don't have any black friends. Most of them have never been to south side. Except for a Sox game. But that's only to the parking lot and to the gate. Then run back to the parking lot and leave quickly.

Literally yelling at black people all week "IT'S NOT RACISM. WHAT DO YOU KNOW, ABOUT THIS DUMB ASS? I'M A WHITE. I'M THE AUTHORITY ON THESE THINGS."

I'm not absolving the players here. I was a 12 year old ballplayer once, and I knew damn well who was a ringer or not. It is ignorant to assume that these kids are dumb to such matters.

To be fair, Terry grew up in the south suburbs. Isn't that as good a place as any to know racism?

I think Mary Mitchell writes a lot of stupid shit and she says some stupid shit in her column today, but she addresses the history of boundaries and the reasons for boundaries in particular situations and why black people might not have the same feelings about or respect for artificial boundaries as a white person. These things are so far outside the experience of most white people that repeating "rules are rules" over and over and over again just makes more sense.

Frankly, the very idea of a “boundary” is enough to anger blacks who grew up in Chicago.

Boundaries were set up to protect the status quo and to impede the inroads black people were making in previously all-white neighborhoods.

Boundaries ensured little white children didn’t have to go to school with little black children. And boundaries were put in place to make sure middle-class whites didn’t have to live next door to poor blacks.

I would think people that grew up apparently as Terry did or I did for sure know a ton more about racism then those in Deerfield.
