Afternoon listenership was up for grabs in January, with CBS Radio all-news WBBM 780 and WCFS FM 105.9, anchored by Kris Kridel and Keith Johnson, rising to the top of the charts.

Nielsen Audio ratings released Tuesday for the period from January 1 to 28 showed the Newsradio combo displacing longtime afternoon leader Doug Banks of iHeartMedia urban adult-contemporary WVAZ FM 102.7, who fell to third.

Between them was Kevin “Koz” Koske of Hubbard Radio hot adult-contemporary WTMX FM 101.9. Although second overall, Koske finished first among listeners between 25 and 54.

Cracking the afternoon top 10 for the first time were Terry Boers and Dan Bernstein of CBS Radio sports/talk WSCR AM 670.

The latest ratings do not reflect the January 26 start of Roe Conn as afternoon host at Tribune Media news/talk WGN AM 720. His predecessors, Bill Leff and Wendy Snyder, bowed out in a tie for 20th place with a 2.3 share. They now co-host middays on WGN.

Steve Dahl, who succeeded Conn and Richard Roeper at Cumulus Media news/talk WLS AM 890 in November, tied for 25th in afternoons with a 1.4 share.

Here are Chicago’s top 10 afternoon shows among listeners age 6 and older from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, as measured by Nielsen Audio in January, followed by average share (with previous month’s share in parentheses):

1. WBBM AM 780/WCFS FM 105.9 Kris Kridel and Keith Johnson 6.0 (4.2)

2. WTMX FM 101.9 Koz (Kevin Koske) 5.5 (4.1)

3. WVAZ FM 102.7 Doug Banks 5.3 (5.9)

4. WKSC FM 103.5 Jordan (Ryan Gorman) 4.7 (4.4)

5. WLIT FM 93.9 Mick Lee 4.5 (15.0)

6. WBBM FM 96.3 Dougie Stylz and Justin Roman 4.3 (4.3)

7. WGCI FM 107.5 U.B. Rodriguez 3.8 (4.2)

8. WSCR AM 670 Terry Boers and Dan Bernstein 3.6 (2.8)

9. (tie) WKQX FM 101.1 Walter Flakus 3.3 (3.4)

9. (tie) WLS FM 94.7 Robert Murphy 3.3 (2.8)

Some foolish people would think its a WIN for Bernstein. In 16 years this is the first time they break the top 10 against? A bunch of people I have never heard of and 2 who I honesty thought both are in jail! I honestly thought the Scores afternoon drive slot has been top 10 for a long time...guess I was wrong.

So congrats on the jump to what some call 'the Big Time"? joining Robert Murphy! WOW

This new all time high is the new bar...with Terry possibly taking his last lap....the fall will only be much further...right around contract time.

Terry would be a great partner for anyone. doesnt tell anyone what to do, when to do it, he just shows up...cracks some jokes and goes home. Not going to be able to replace him and carry the ratings with Holmes and Bernstein.

First time they crack the top 10 for total listeners 25-54

They've been #1 in their targeted male demo for a year or so. In the top 5 their entire afternoon run I believe.

If they just cracked the top ten for the first time, then by definition, it would be their biggest WIN EVER.

Our opinions of who is in jail or might be selling Pizza Hut door to door are pretty irrelevant at that point.

According to the article by Feder, Boers and Bernstein made the top 10 list for total listeners age 6 and above.

I wish they had made the top ten when the show was great from 2006-2012.

It's an affirmation that the recent changed/exaggerated style is preferred. I would like to say it wasn't but the numbers are there. More importantly, the attack of the clones will continue.

Now, you could always respond that they couldn't sniff those numbers when faced with competition at ESPN and you would be absolutely correct. However, there isn't competition and their isn't competition on the horizon.

Aren't radio audiences shrinking regardless of format?

If so, is B&B's improved ratings really an affirmation?

yes

at the very least, those that still listen prefer their style

however, they increase their audience from the last cycle

I am as big of a hater as anyone, but you have to give them props. As DB has noted many times, lots of folks claim not listen but actually do.

Keep spinning the book as a "bad" thing that B&B are a top ten show. Only a FOOL would think that's a bad thing!
Hope you don't manage people for a living.
"Ok guys you improved. That's terrible you are all fired!"

Now coming up with scenarios why they will fail years from now. It's like some of you have a vendetta against the station. Here's an idea. Spend less time listening and more time with your therapist.

16 years and just now alleged to break the top 10? lol

Maybe this month the PPM meters got in the hands of some SCORE listeners that listen to them on the drive home? Would actually make a ton of sense, considering the midday ratings fell so far.

I just find it funny to think I cant listen....remember the mantra of the people who knew Bernstein in HS. "I didnt listen to him then, why would I listen to him now?"

Again, this is Top 10 across all demos. They have been leading in their key demo forever. As a radio "expert", you should be able to understand this.

Not even playing an expert on TV an they havent been leading the demo forever.

They dropped behind Mac, Jurko and Carm many times and personally I dont think any WSCR show should lose to ESPN ever. WSCR has a tremendous advantage of no national stuff. They keep listeners all day. Of course North got destroyed, which says something in itself. Once again...The Mike North show got destroyed....Mike North as part of a team would still work, if he would work in a team

Only their demo matters to advertisers. Ask the great Spada and Hockburg. "Donate your car today."

What does it say about the radio market when people listen to a show where one guy doesn't watch sports and the other guy despises the listener base?

I agree that happens....I am just not one of them. My listening to BB over the past months is down about 75% and about 98% the past 3-4 weeks.

Still waiting to see the results of Terry taking off.

like I said, once White Sox baseball starts, their ratings will fall back to where they normally are.

also, it was a big Bears-newsy month, and that should do well for B&B or anybody they had in the slot.

SO funny seeing Biggie not be a fan of B&B.

When he first started this board, there was no bigger fan. Even made Larry Horse mugs!

Lots of people here were huge Boers & Bernstein fans years ago until the spirit of the show changed.

That stuff just made it hard to listen because Dan was right, but still insufferable. He made it hard to do the right thing.

The flat out lies that he started over the last 6 months with the rooftops, Cubs and Bears, really just started pandering to a low common denominator and is far from the 'smart' sports talk he claims to represent.

Yes, the Larry Horse thing as an example....that was Terry and we all know it. Dan was just there. Larry Horse moments will be replaced by "Then Jason figured it out for me, he is so smart"
