It seems like Kaplan, while merely a shock jock, does have Cubs sources. He sometimes puts out his 'rumors' on Twitter.

https://twitter.com/thekapman/status/671327096673800192

I'm guessing he does show his show as well, though I haven't heard it (ESPN needs to split up their podcasts...)

They're inoffensive and even considered legit enough to get picked up by MLBTradeRumors. Yet when Bernstein, who no doubt has 'people' in some fashion, tries the same thing, he's ridiculed.

And I think he should be!

Is it just because he's a peen who bloviates with 'loud voices in the room' vernacular instead of just fucking saying it? Him and Spiegel had competing 'my Cubs guy' David Price talk that was fairly :puker:

I'm not a Kaplan fan but he does seem to have Cubs info. Bernsie has no credible info (It's Girardi...there is no plan B, Kerry Wood personal services contract.)

Maybe Bernsie was right about no plan B. I mean... look what you ended up with there. Yeesh.

Kap has great sources, Bernstein doesn't have any sources.. He talks out of his ass and tries to slap his thinking into a Cubs Source..its embarrassing really.

Someone should call in and say (in Danny's annoying "Chicago" voice), "da Cubs should bring dat Kerry Woods back into the organISaTion", then we he yells at them say (in normal voice), "what happened to that personal services contract they had in the desk drawer for Kerry Wood?".

Kap is actually at the Park most days talking to people.

Bernstein needs a security detail to walk to his car.

Good enough

Yep. The obvious answer to the original question is that Kap actually has one.

Kap is the Jay Glazer of Chicago.
A guy you might like or might not but he has great (REAL) sources.

Bernstein is the Jim Bowden of Chicago.
A guy you definitely don't like and his sources are logical guesses and regurgitated twitter stories.

It's great to see Kap and W&S pounding the Score King and Crypt Keeper in the ratings.

Kap is not a shock jock. The worst I can say about him is that he likes to play devil's advocates with his guests. That is his way of second guessing decisions made by a team. Typical example:

Kap: Should the Cubs have went to their closer with one out in the 8th?
Guest: No, the manager understands it's a long season and does not want to burn out the bullpen.
Kap: But aren't games played in May worth just as much as those in September?

....

Kap has real sources. Bernsie is a joke.

Kaplan is a dyed in the wool jock sniffer. He'll talk with anyone even tangentially related to any sports organization from the groundskeeper to president, if they will give him the time. So yes, I think he does have sources and secondary sources that can confirm the original source. Dan is fed stories the organization wants put into the media by the PR person for the team. He may have a source but he's not getting unadulterated info.

As an analogy:

Dan is Michael Sneed, while Kap is (well I can't really come up with a columnist who is like Kaplan)

Kap's sources are in the Non-Fiction Section and Bernstein's can be found prominently displayed in the Fiction Section.

well, when it comes to Price, Kaplan was far closer than Bernstein.

Point taken.

Serious question...

When was the last time (or has there ever been a time) when Danny actually broke any news? I'm always baffled how guys like Jay Glazer break Bear news before any of the Lords of the Airwaves.

He was out in front of Trestman getting fired, but he hedged it in so much "the Bears could fire Trestman or Emery or both or neither" that it hardly counts.

They never break it. They report obvious posibilities and claim it as "Sourced". That's Bernstein's game. Goff hopped on it. Drinky had a couple as well.

Terry just waits for Dan to say something and then says "My guy said the same thing." That's his game.

This is correct. In the age of social media, these guys form opinions on what they read, and aren't exactly going out on a limb in most instances. In Bernstein's case, he'll report that the Cubs "may' sign David Price or consider other options. You're not going to get a report from saying the Cubs are not willing to spend Boston money, etc.

Glazer is the best scoop guy in the NFL and Wojo in the NBA. The national guys are able to get information that the local guys do not. Guys like Hoge, Zaidman, Dickerson....they may think they are providing valuable information, but they all repeat the same stuff. Biggs is the local reporter most likely to have inside information that he'll report on. Levine gets an occasional scoop in baseball too.
