While I like most of Mulligan's work, I have become bored of this obsession he has with Lovie's contract. Whether it is on print or radio, Mulligan seems to bring this up every day.

Mike, let it go. I don't recall Lovie being a hot coaching commodity before he was hired by the Bears. He was never a NFL head coach nor a college head coach. He was a defensive coordinator for three years for a Rams team that was good, but not great on defense. If there was a greater demand for Lovie in 2003 he would have signed a bigger contract. But there was no great demand for his services. The Bears offered him a contract and Lovie signed. End of story.

And I could care less what the Redskins pay their coordinators. Should the Bears base the salaries they pay off what the village idiot does
i.e. Daniel Snyder. I hope not.

Lovie will get his payday but I don't fault the Bears for being cautious. They were burned with Dick Jauron (and I remember a lot of the media after 2001 criticizing the Bears for not giving Jauron an extension sooner).
It seems like most people agree that Lovie and his staff was outcoached last year in the playoffs. Why agree to the details of a new contract now, what happens if he gets outcoached this Sunday. If Lovie coaches his team to the Super Bowl, he should get more than if the Bears lose this Sunday, no?

The great coaches have success in the playoffs. Belichek is considered great because of the Super Bowl wins and playoff record, not because he has won 4 division titles, just as Schottenheimer will be remembered probably more for his poor playoff record than any regular season success.

So Mulligan, please drop this subject until after the season is over. Lovie does deserve a contract extnesion but let's see what the Bears do in the postseason before the arguments begin of how much Lovie should be compensated.

Mulligan.

You are reading the Boards. Admit it.

heard Mulligan today say 'Some people think I am obsessed with Lovie's contract"

Don't worry, I enjoy your shows immensely.

I can honestly say today was a low light. Your attempt at a Nawlins' accent was just terrible.

a BIG FAN

Here's what I don't get. When Lovie signed the contract was he expected to lose to live up to the 1.2 million he's making. Hell no. They gave him his first chance with good players. Few coaches get to go to a talented team with their first job. Had he gone else where he might have been fired never to be hired again.

Hey Mulligan sometimes it's Ok if management wins on a contract. Jesus christ there are so many examples where managment signs a guy that doesn't live up. (Moose, Ogunleye) Why don't you write where they should give money back. You won't do that.

Mulligan. Lovie gonna get his money. Even if it's not with the Bears. Which it will be. He's built up enough of a reusme where he will get hired and get money else where.

SuperBowl week and the media is still playing up this non- story.
If you're getting your first head coaching job, you take whatever head coaching job you can get because each first offer might be the last offer you'll get for awhile. But Lovie is lucky to get a good working relationship with a kickass talent guy. Still, coaching makes the talent come through , so everyone looks like a genius. Theres no way he'll get that with Jerry Jones. Though he'll spend some dough, Jones is usually a bad boss and comes off looking like a prick.
Grannie Virginia seems like she's given Ted Phillips lattitude to spend. Of course if Michael McCaskey comes back from the doghouse, forget about it and bye bye Lovie.

Just win, baby. Bring home the trophy. Then you'll get paid.

'Living Up'. If the team wins, these guys may still be 'living up'. Sacrificing stats and doing the little things for the team is fine by me. Knowing when to step up at the right time within a team concept. Then you're getting your money's worth.

Someone like Terrell Owens always 'lives up' stats-wise. If thats all he does, I dont need that kind of guy on my team.

Now he is ripping the team for not paying the staff and creating "negative internal public relations". Get back to the sportsaroo mully.
