Who'd have watched Tom Trebelhorn's Cubs in Rolling Meadows?

the assumption is that Master and Commander Theo is going to make them competitive every year for the rest of our lives, therefore they could build in lovely Sycamore and the adoring public will jam route 64 to see the sights.

He won't and we won't.

I've never seen a fanbase want to turn its team into the New York Islanders. Even the Islanders don't want to be the Islanders anymore.

I can't disagree with that. However I really believe that if they did the replica right, they'd draw just as many fans in Sham-Berg as they do at Clark and Addison.

Not at all. Things like that can be changed.

You voluntarily move into a neighborhood known for its rowdiness. You have no fucking right to complain about the noise.

Right. They can be changed if you're a billionaire with the right clout.

You voluntary buy a landmarked stadium with sign restrictions. You have no right to complain about those restrictions.

They would. That is the biggest mistake the dumbass Tribune Co. made when they bought the team. No one was coming to the games anyway back then and they should have built a new stadium in the burbs before the sudden 84 Cubs thing and this shit never would be an issue. The rooftop owners are stealing another owners profits and have been for 30 years. Fuck them. Move.

Why shouldn't we side with ownership on this? Ownership may deliver us something we want. The rooftop owners never will give us anything.

What is the basis for this thought? Why do you think the Cubs started selling out the way they did?

And, again, nobody goes on a rooftop as an alternative to going to the game. It's a completely different experience. It isn't a skybox. It's something you can't do anywhere else.

The Cubs had a 25 year run where they were able to sell everything but baseball. I believe that's unprecedented. It came to an end the same way it began- due to a variety of natural factors. A new stadium in a suburb would be a very temporary solution. The real answer is to stop being so spoiled and unrealistic and realize that drawing 2 million fans per season is strong business.

The idea that the Cubs shouldn't be allowed to do whatever they want just because they're owned by a rich guy and fans in New York and Schaumburg want them to win so desperately isn't support for the asswipes that own the rooftops.

I'm not saying that contracts shouldn't be honored, but if what I was reading is correct it looks like the rooftop owners are seeking a mandatory extension of the contract in order to let the Cubs do anything. This is when the rooftop owners start to interfere with Cubs business. They aren't just getting what they are owed in the contract, but they are now putting the squeeze on the Cubs.

They're just using the leverage they have to try to get what they want. It's no different than the Cubs demanding city streets be closed before the make an investment or else...

In spite of the nonsense that you may hear on WSCR between 1 and 6, the Cubs may have some problems if the rooftop owners decide to bring a lawsuit. One of them may be that the Ricketts family themselves may have given the rooftops more standing than they had by partnering with one of them and saving it from bankruptcy/foreclosure.

I don't think the rooftop owners are some poor small businessmen just trying to get by. They're vicious sharks, some of whom may have clout a lot stronger than Tom Tunney. Be that as it may, it's still no reason to grant the Cubs license to "do whatever they want".

Exactly, which is why Cubs fans should root for the rooftop owners to be thoroughly defeated. It's not really a breach of contract issue right now. It's the rooftop owners using a situation to try and get a better deal. That's why all Cubs fans should be rooting for the rooftop owners to be defeated. The rooftop owners then get whatever they are owed in the current contract and the Cubs get to do everything else they want to do in an attempt to win more games.

The rooftop owners are being greedy. Now, you'll say that they have that right. That is correct. However, when an unaffiliated business is attempting to take a portion of the profits that could be going in part to player salaries and fancy computer hardware the line is drawn for Cubs fans. If you want to win, support the Cubs 100%. If you think it's cute that the Cubs play in a field with rooftop seats from other companies then don't support the Cubs.

Fuck the rooftops and their owners.

Fuck em in the ear, fuck em in the other ear

And dont tell me the Cubs signed a contract. To that I say "So fucking what?"

I still want them defeated and there are legal loopholes to exploit.

If the rooftops crumble tomorrow, Ill be ok with that.

You're right. If you're a rich guy who buys a bigger piece of property, you gain the right to whine and bitch. Go, rich guys, go!

I think Rahm should just institute a feudal system in Wrigleyville ceding all land between the lake and Ashland and Irving and Belmont to the Great and Powerful Joe Ricketts. All businesses operating in said area can operate like sharecroppers paying an 83% tribute to TD Ameritrade.

You've really done nothing to explain/support your point, or counter mine.

I haven't?

Your position is that a person shouldn't move into an area where they know a circumstances exists and then complain about said circumstances. Why that doesn't apply to owners purchasing stadiums, you have yet to explain.

I only shot down everything that you've stated while making your illogical comparison, but keep trying!

(While the Cubs are pretty much getting everything they wanted anyway...)

You shot down nothing. It's a perfectly logical comparison. You're just someone who likes to cheer the rich guy. I'm not sure why. I don't know you. Maybe you're rich yourself. More likely, you're a middle class guy who thinks he can one day be rich if he just works hard enough and catches a few breaks and has unfettered admiration for those he strives to be like. Go, rich guys, go! The Cubs are getting everything they want! Hallelujah! Let's party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This narrative is getting out of hand and becoming downright stupid. People are "rooting" for Ricketts because they are "rooting" for the Cubs.

Fucking stupid.

Or you know what, maybe they are rooting for a rich guy? The guy is offering to spend $500 million bucks and the opportunity for that middle class guy to get a job. What the fuck are rooftop owners offering? Signs? A bartending gig for a 20-something chick?

I'm a Cubs fan but I'm not rooting for Ricketts. Some things are bigger than revenue streams.

We're not talking about rooftops now. Killer V suggested that people who move in next to a ballpark or airport knowing those things exist, shouldn't complain about them. I believe he said, "they should shut the fuck up".

I want to know why that's different than a rich guy buying a stadium being fully aware of the existing conditions and then complaining and whining about said conditions.

The one thing that is different is that the rich guy has a bunch of money to steamroll everyone in sight while all the little guy can do is complain and whine.

Right, there is no difference. But, I believe the rooftops have been handling this terribly. They are in the right but somehow are still the unsympathetic figure.

There's a lot in this thread, but I wanted to address this statement. Sports may actually make for a good analogy to my point. The kids on the playground don't cheer for an overweight troll that can't dribble a basketball. They want to be Kobe or LeBron. As adults, I think it is fine that people look glowingly at successful business people like Mark Zuckerberg or Sergey Brin or whomever. It is certainly part aspirational, but it also represents what is best about our society. I think our interests are more aligned with wealthy folks in that they create wealth through their companies and are net contributors to society. It is from folks like these that the Link Card is funded.

It consistently disappoints me that politicians and the media "bash" successful people as somehow looting society. Google employs 54,000 people. Let's teach our kids how Brin did it, so we can develop more entrepreneurs.

I get that the hedge fund crowd is a waste of space. The guys I listed and many more have created vast wealth. That includes Warren, who JORR originally mentioned. Even if you look merely at the income tax statistics, the wealthy are funding a large portion of government spending.

But that's because kids are undeveloped. They act like animals. We've all read Lord of the Flies. I think as mature adults we expect more of ourselves. What kind of society do we want to be? Without laws and controls in place, Tom and Joe Ricketts are weak men. What's to stop someone physically stronger from taking whatever they have? All the laws are tilted to benefit the rich and powerful. When those people start feeling the pinch they declare war on the poor. It isn't the other way around.
