Haugh declined to comment further on his departure, but sources noted that his status with the newspaper shifted to free-lance in 2018 when he teamed with Mike Mulligan on The Score’s morning show. As a result, Haugh cut back his output from five columns a week to two or three.

Wouldn't it be the opposite? Lay off the full-timers with benefits and use freelancers.

It's counterintuitive but I think people are less informed not reading printed papers. You pass on line stories in which you have no interest. Reading the paper, you would frequently be drawn in to stories you thought wouldn't interest you only to find that they had value and provided depth to how you viewed the larger world.

Definitely. Self-curation of the news has been disastrous. When I was a little kid I used to read Time cover-to-cover every week.

I find this shocking.

Bought a Sun-Times every day for 15 years, it gradually got so skinny and more expensive it wasn't worth it. They've got themselves to blame, if they beefed it up with stories from around the country taken off the web ..they'd still be turning a profit and readership would be 10x what it currently is.
