Quote:
“The Chicago Tribune might not be what it used to be, but [it is] still full of proud, hard-working reporters I admire, who care about journalism,” he tweeted. “I always will love the Tribune and its mission, blessed to have been a part of it for so long. It was a good run full of some great moments.”

Haugh declined to comment further on his departure, but sources noted that his status with the newspaper shifted to free-lance in 2018 when he teamed with Mike Mulligan on The Score’s morning show. As a result, Haugh cut back his output from five columns a week to two or three.

At a time of impending staff reductions at the Tribune — including buyouts and possible layoffs — free-lance budgets are an early and inevitable casualty.

Wouldn't it be the opposite? Lay off the full-timers with benefits and use freelancers.

Have seen the DH? Using the same beat writer for Cubs and Sox, and no more beat guy for the Bears? They are just using the Arkash’s and PFW content. It’s sad.

Tribune is total garbage at this point. You can't even afford David Haugh?

Bad thread. I thought this as Haugh being off of the radio show.

Its a shame, but I cannot remember the last time I read the SunTimes or Tribune, let alone bought a copy.

It used to be such a large part of my routine.

Me too#... Thoroughly disappointed, who cares about the newspaper, haven't read one in 5 years. We need this clown off the radio.

Unfortunately had to go through this in a previous career, he had been there a while and likely was able to negotiate a higher rate, so get rid of higher wage scale PRN's, have the FTE's absorb duties, then get rid of expensive FTE's, increase employee costs for benefits for remaining staff, and finally sell off a much leaner company.

it's been downhill In the Wake of the News since Bernie left for Denver.

Don't buy either paper anymore, that was such a constant habit of mine....

It's counterintuitive but I think people are less informed not reading printed papers. You pass on line stories in which you have no interest. Reading the paper, you would frequently be drawn in to stories you thought wouldn't interest you only to find that they had value and provided depth to how you viewed the larger world.

It has to be scary to have lost a job in such an industry at his age. He needed to squeeze out another 10 years.

The Score, obviously, was more lucrative but I'm sure producing 3-5 easy columns a week was a nice bonus.

Back when I worked downtown I think on slow days I must of read three papers. And I mean almost every damn word on the worst of days between standing around waiting for the phone to ring and the rides to and from home. I kind of miss those days but the Bureau County Republican doesn’t exactly fill the void.

Definitely. Self-curation of the news has been disastrous. When I was a little kid I used to read Time cover-to-cover every week.

+3 or 4 or whatever it is. At home it was the Daily News and then when it went away it was the Trib. I would then try to poach a Sun Times on the train or at work. Read 'em all cover to cover along with Time, Money and Sports Illustrated. Seems all that's left is this bored, facebook and Yahoo. I feel dumber just writing this.

Yep. I was a 7 days a week subscriber and always made an effort to read the whole paper. The only hard copy I get these days is the Sunday Trib. Although that gives you digital access to all of the other days I rarely even bother unless I'm flying somewhere.

I have never been able to adjust to reading newspaper or books in a digital format. Something tactile about turning the page perhaps. Have the same problem with taking notes at the few conferences I go to. People around me typing in laptops and tablets and I’m scratching away with a pencil in a spiral.

Bought a Sun-Times every day for 15 years, it gradually got so skinny and more expensive it wasn't worth it. They've got themselves to blame, if they needed it up with stories from around the country taken off the web ..they'd still be turning a profit and readership would be 10x what it currently is.

Used to read the box scores, league leaders, and standings everyday. You can sometimes almost tell more about what happened in the game by looking at the box score than reading the game recaps which were only a sentence or two for the out of town games.
