I never listen to this show, and I don't know why I tuned in today.

But, the guys were talking about an intriguing idea that would allow colleges and universities to offer student athletes the chance to choose a sports-related major while enrolled.

My initial knee-jerk reaction was 100% against this proposal. I immediately thought that if "Sports Management" or something similar was offered, every student would want to take it. However, I now think this idea may have some merit.

Many college athletes choose their school based on one thing: the possibility or promise of playing time. Very few athletes incorporate the potential of a good education into their choice. With that being the case, I actually see no problem with a student enrolling in something that actually interests them as opposed to "Hotel Management" or "Sociology".

Colleges and Universities already offer majors such as sports management and mass/sports media which tend to be an easier route and sport psychology, exercise science and sports medicine which are a more difficult route. I think the athletes that are not there for the education generally prefer to go with a communications major on a 6 year plan and take as many electives as possible instead of core classes.

Hanley seemed to miss the entire concept of bigtime college sports when he kept saying "the coaches have to be adults and tell the kids to be adults and get an education". That's the last thing that coach cares about. In fact, the curriculum for athletes is designed to allow them to concentrate mainly on football or basketball. But I don't think it's a tragedy or something to wring hands over. There are plenty of guys that don't have college educations and never played sports.

Bingo. The Loyola coach who graduated 100% of his athletes during his term and had a record over .500 was just let go. it's about winning.
