A lot of soccer talk today. Or should I say football? Good to see Mully indulging his vanities. But see this is the problem I have when some radio guy says that they cover the Cubs more than the Sox or devote hours to the Bears during June and July because "that's what the listeners demand". I'm pretty sure not many people are demanding soccer talk. So, don't crap me. Just say you talk about what you want and PTFB if you don't like it. At least bernstein will tell you to go fuck yourself if you don't like it as he babbles on about child rape for months. I do think a sports radio station should give at least some coverage to the World Cup. It just seemed like there was an awful lot of it this morning. And I don't believe most WSCR listeners give a rat's ass about the transfer of Clint Dempsey to the Sounders. Wimbledon is important, but I don't hear Mac going on about strawberries and cream. Maybe Mully covers that too. Mully, you been talkin' about the queen again, on Independence Day? Finally, was Mully supposed to be some big time footballer? Because I played on the best team in the Catholic League, hell, in the whole damn Chicago area, and I'm around the same age as he is. I think he's a Brother Rice guy. I never remember them giving us any trouble or having any standout players. I don't really remember playing them at all. I'm sure we must have steamrolled them like we steamrolled everyone else in the conference. The only tough Catholic League game I recall was against Quigley South. They had a couple of brothers I think were islanders, maybe Jamaican or Haitian. Those guys were tough. We played at their place, 7700 south or whatever, on a cold and rainy day. We were lucky to get away with a tie that day. A kid named Wally Chimiak tied it up late for us. The game was contentious and there were several near fights and some yellow cards. The final was 2-2. Is that Mully in this picture, top row, third from right? |

Matty doesn't know a thing about soccer. He mentioned watching Barcelona once on air and that they were his favorite team. When I called in for WYC last year to crap Sir Alex Ferguson it was Matty who answered the phone. Drinky didn't even know who SAF was. Some soccer fan there who doesn't even know one of its all time greats. Mully is the classic Euro-snob soccer fan. If he was around 30ish he'd be that white douchebag in your office trying to impress you with the fact that Marco Reus and Franck Ribery won't be playing in the World Cup. |

Have you ever eaten at Rocky's Tacos? They have menu items named after soccer luminaries and futbol terminolgy. And not just Mexicans either. For example they have a "David Beckham" and a "Maradona". My favorite is the "Fuck You Referi". One item is called the "Antidoping". I stared at it for awhile thinking "that's no Spanish word" before I realized what it was. |

heard this radio disaster yesterday. about the same time I realized why I have no emotional attachment to M&H - they keep their private lives totally private. you don't know anything about them. why would you really develop an affinity for someone like that? |

I never remember them giving us any trouble or having any standout players. I thought you went to ETHS? Oh, no! My sister was allowed to go there but our parents thought I required more discipline so I was sent to Gordon Tech. After my sophomore year our coach, Tom Chmela, who was a great coach and an awesome guy, took the job at Evanston. The next year we hadn't lost a game going into the sectionals. We ended up in a sectional with Evanston. The format was a four team round robin. We lost a game, I don't remember to what school. We won our next game and then faced Evanston with our old coach and a bunch of guys I grew up with. Evanston was 2-0 in the tournament. We beat them, so there were three teams tied in summary at 2-1-0 and another team at 0-3-0. Evanston moved on based on goal differential and won the state championship. Now you know why I hate Pythagorean records so much. |
