Speculation is the team fetches $700 million.

So who buys it?

Drum roll please .........

The next owner of the Cubs will be Andy McPahil. This is why he left in September, he saw this coming and need to leave to devote time to form an investor group to buy the team. Conflicts of interest prevent him from doing this while employed by the Tribune Company.

The Canning Group was the leader going in, the economy knocked them out. They have too many other interests and need to keep cash on hand.

Just wondering how many people are in this deal? As the Rickets kid (age 43) is an investment banker, I am guessing most of Winnetka, East Wilmette and every single person who lives in Kenilworth are in this deal. Can't imagine my guy, Pat Ryan , Jr.(Future owner of the Chicago bears) isn't putting a few dollars in this one.

Dr. Ken? Are you in?

I'm a silent partner...so silent that they'll hardly even know I'm there.

Look for Ron Zook Beanie Baby Day soon, though. Get in line early.

There may be plenty in the bleachers, but I don't think they could get by with giving away boobs at the turnstyles.

I'd say I got this pretty close 5 years ago...

As you point out, they sell out so the only way to raise revenues is through price increases as you also point out. But the Cubs already have the 2nd highest prices in MLB. Cubs fans are loyal but even they would balk at new ownership coming in and cutting payroll while raising ticket prices. Not good PR to cut quality and raise prices.

Harley Davidson owners are loyal but they wouldn't go for someone coming in and saying, "Hey we're going to jack prices a little while we use some less durable materials."

Raising prices is risky as it doesn't take much of an attendance decrease to offset any gain once you figure in lost concession and merchandise revenue.

It would be great to do more concerts and "away nights" but there are strict regulations on that. I believe the agreement was to allow 1 concert every 2 years. And if they cannot do Cubs home games on Fri/Sat night, I doubt "away nights" will be allowed.

The profit that has been generated the past few years will be expected to continue and figured into the purchase price. If you want to say that is thanks to MacPhail, fine, but it better continue if you are leveraging. I don't think the Cubs are a good target for a "quick fix" turnaround and profit taking. They are built to generate solid cash flow from steady ownership and maintaining the experience they are selling. If you start tweaking that experience (corporate sponsorship, etc.) you start to risk the golden goose. Add to that the regulation from the neighborhood for changes and it suddenly is not as attractive for a group to start making changes.

Was totally with you, but part of the assumption of buying this team is that you need to build this triangle building, maybe even expand the park as in "Buying Waveland" in order to increase revenues.

From everyone I spoke with, this was a real estate deal as the "development" of the park was the real upside here.

Of course that was with a continued expenditure of a top 5 market, as they want top 5 ticket prices.

I keep hearing the Ricketts are fine from all those "in the know" but yet they had to defer $5M of Pena's money to 2012?

deferring is a great move and as you know JR would do it with every contract if he could

I believe Jerry did it because of the cash limits the team has.. In the mans words, "I will deal with next year, next year"

And the team is not his money, thus he is not putting his money in.

The Cubs are the Ricketts money. Pay it now or pay it later, who cares.

Also, not even Jerry needed to push $5 Mill to next year for his starting 1st baseman on a $10 mill deal.? Jerry did the "I will pay for $1 mill a year for 20 years".....I think Julio Cruz just picked up his last check this year!

Some of AJs new contract was deferred.

It's the time value of money. If I was going to pay you a dollar today but I can hold off paying until next year, I make money on your dollar.
