For once Norths actually has a point. Whoever heard of a media critic, whose job it is to critique a program, actually being part of the show he is assigned to critique? It's also interesting that the Trib editors allowed it. Another sign of the demise of the grey lady. But it's absolutely brilliant on Zederman's and Craig's part to invite the fox into the henhouse and make pals with him. We all know first hand how difficult it is to be objective about our friends. They make Teddy their bud and, whether Teddy will ever admit it or not, it's now much more difficult for Teddy to honestly criticize his friends. So much for Journalism Ethics as practiced in 2008.

This isn't really much of a new development, though. It has been going on for some time. MJH have had Teddy as an occasional guest on their show, and the tenor of those conversations was very buddy buddy. That's not something you have seen other media critics do with other shows because it puts their objectivity into question. Could you imagine Feder doing the Spike O'Dell show? Or Rosenthal doing the evening news? Of course not. Brilliant move on ESPN's part. Their principal media critic is now their pal. That's very smart business. Keep your friends close...and your critics even closer.

Coast, I see your point, but Norths tone and reaction to it sounded more like he was pissed off that he didnt get his name in the paper, he even admitted that he likes to see his name in the paper. Plus, if Teddy was a full time media guy, I would sit on your side of the fence, but since he isnt and Pappy reacted like a child who didnt get what he want for X-Mas, I just think Pappy looks bad in the way he reacted.

I dont know if you heard pappy this morning, but like I said before, it was just his tone, it was a first for me to hear the panic in his voice, almost like he picked up the paper while he was on the air and the more he read it, the more pissed off he got. With that said, the biggest thing I took away from it was the fact that when he is interviewed, that he wants certain things to be in the article, I dont know, because as most can see, I am not a writer, but that seems strange to me.
I think North is finally needs to realize that he is no longer the king of Chicago sports radio, hell, he isn't even the queen. People no longer need to kiss his ass, he is almost irrelevent in the city now days.

man of few opinions, Those are interesting questions. Maybe someone from the Trib can answer trhem. I can tell you that for many years, most newspapers and broadcast media companies had strong rules against any journalist taking freebies or in any way getting too close to the people they were assigned to cover. I've been out of the business for awhile so can't tell you which companies have which rules today. Obviously those times have changed. So the appearance of objectivity may not matter to you when it comes to critics. You're not alone. It apparently doesn't matter to the Tribune either.

You guys missed on very important point. Teddy was very clear at the outset that he was invited to be on the show not as Teddy Greenstein Tribune media critic, but as Teddy Greenstein Chicago Tribune NCAA football columnist. He wears two hats for the trib and he was there wearing his college football hat.

Big difference.

And you bought that as being plausible?

You know me, Coast. I'm just being funny. He said no such thing.

We do know you. That's why we thought you weren't funny.

OK that was me just trying to be funny.

i suppose the bottom line of my post is that i never rely on a reviewer for any opinions on anythng anyway. i have never seen a movie because of a review i read, or gone to a restaurant because i read about it in the paper. those are things that i know what my tastes are, and nothing i am going to read written by someone i dont know is going to make me go out of my way to try it.

it just isnt an important enough topic, in my opinion only, to start worrying about journalistic integrity. i may be wrong, it has been calculated that 62% of the time i dont know what the fuck i am talking about. the other 38% i know what i am talking about, but i am just flat wrong about it.

That would be like North arguing vehemently about the Cubs being greedy several years ago when they were threatening to obstruct the view of the rooftop owners unless they forked over some of their profits, as they were 'stealing' from the Cubs.

The same Mike North that was a paid spokesperson for Beyond the Ivy (at the time).

I turned it on to start my ride home...and turned it off about 5 minutes later. Show was pretty bad today.

You mean to say you judged the whole show based on 5 minutes? how'd you manage that?
