What can I say that hasn't already been said? Answer- ESPN radio was my lifeline during a very important part of this White Sox fan's life. For those who may not know, I attended college in Bozeman, MT from August 2005 thru May 2007. Though I didn't stumble upon this board until after the Sox had uncorked every last Champagne bottle, and the 5 million people from the parade (factoid courtesy ABC 7) had all gone home, I was very much a P1 and listned online daily. MJH and Silvy & Carmen mornings was my lifeline. I wasted countless hours listening on my PC when I should have been studying, and even called in a few times to talk Sox baseball.
Again, I had been listening long before that (I started in 2001 when I was a pizza delivery guy, listening to Rome and Patrick, then got into MJH), but it was that time period that got me hooked. Meatball or not, and as much as I love the Bears, I live for White Sox baseball. And even though I was emailing my White Sox friends on a daily basis, I am forever grateful that those 2 shows were not only on the air, but accessable to me via the internet. And that they kept my informed and gave me just a little toke of what it was like to be in Chicago during that stretch.
I did make it in town for the clincher on 10/26/05, but thats a story for a different day. Yesterday was a friends birthday, and though the conversation at Hooters ranged to a miriad of differnt topics, the Afternoon Saloon was front and center as well. A number of my friends listened as well, some every day, some just every so often. All were shocked and saddened to hear of the departure of Danny Mac. This doesn't just affect a handful of us on this silly little message board. This loss affects a hundreds and thousands of people all across this great city, and the country. Yes, I understand in the grand scheme of things, a radio show is not that important. But it was my radio show, and not only did I look forward to listening almost every day, I looked forward to attending remotes and sharing a cold drink or 12 with some of you fine folks, and Manniversaries, and emailing and calling in to the show, and sharing thoughts about the show and its people here on this forum. Yes its just a radio show, but I'm sad and the Afternoon Saloon will definitely be missed. As most of you know, I love my music and my Zeppelin tapes, but my commutes home from work will never again be the same. I am happy I was considered a "VIP" at this particular saloon for so long, and I'm happy my interactions on the board led to a handful friendships that I hope will continue. I am quite sorry to see this chapter in Chicago sports radio come to an end, as it was my very favorite, and it certainly will be tough to top.
I wholeheartedly thank everybody involved with the show, wish you all the very best of luck. I can't speak for everybody else, but the Mac, Jurko, and Harry Show will be sorely missed by me.
Bullseye!
And no one on the Show thought they were the Frank Sinatra of Northwest Highway!!!!
