I think so. Those schools have great academic requirements, too.

On another thought, one reason why NU doesn't do well in sports is because all the art geeks and thespians go there, and they have no interest in sports.

With the exception of Craig Moore, put the whole NU team on there.

That's a broad brush . . . Aside from the Women's recent national championships, the football team:

-Won or shared three Big 10 titles from 1995-2000

-Finished .500 last year despite being only 18 months removed from losing it's head coach and replacing him with the coach of the future 5 years too soon.

-Has been to four bowl games since 1996

-Finished third in the Big 10 in 2005 and fourth in 2004 before Walker's death

Not exactly "not doing well in sports".

I agree - the football team is in good enough shape. It's the basketball programs (both men and women) that blow.

Does anyone else miss the actual interviews with athletes on Chicago sports radio? This has turned into the "Sports Writers " of old. Not that I have anything against the SW's, but let's hear from someone other than just the 3 amigos!

The first team is comprised of Texas' D.J. Augustin, Drake's Adam Emmenecker, Belmont's Justin Hare, Coastal Carolina's Jack Leasure and North Dakota State's Brett Winkelman.

Drew Neitzel is joined on the second team by Butler's A.J. Graves, Southern Illinois' Bryan Mullins, Western Michigan's Joe Reitz and Green Bay's Mike Schachtner.

The third team includes Sam Houston State's Ryan Bright, Boise State's Matt Nelson, Duke's Greg Paulus, West Virginia's Alex Ruoff and Butler's Drew Streicher.


Now some will say that to be an Academic All-American at NU is more difficult because of the competition. I say if you get into NU because you so smart, making AAA should be no problem.

1. I'm only talking about sports that count, so if it starts with "Women's..." then it doesn't matter.

2. There are 26 Bowls for a little over 100 schools. Thats 52/107(?) schools that make it to a Bowl. Not difficult. I'm sure if we fielded a team out of scrubs from this site, we'd make the international bowl. So 4 in 12 years isn't impressing me too much.

Wow - someone with a class as small as mine.

I got into NU, ND, IL, DePaul, Iowa but took Iowa after getting a scholarship. I could have waited on ND but I had to get back to Iowa the same day as the alumni interviews.

I was the 25th percentile.

Doug, 88 kids in a graduating class? My grade school was bigger than that.

I think he is. I know for a fact that even Ivy League schools have significantly relaxed standards for atheletes. I'll take it a step farther, U of C significantly relaxes its standards.

Point taken. Sometimes I hear it on the post game and ask myself, "Self, why are you shouting?"

As for academic credentials... I'm with lower case good dolphin on not remembering specifics... but I know my "above average" response to the question "How ya doin'?" emanates from my C+ GPA and a class rank of somwhere around 250 in a class of just less than 600. I think I owed points on the math portion of my SATs. Hate that test as it offers no opportunity to flex one's writing or speaking muscles.

I couldn't tell you my GPA to save my life, but I must admit that we used to say "Goal 2.0 eligilibilty." I do remember

Sounds familiar, had a 27 on my ACT and around 12-15 percentile in my class and got rejected from the U of I business school in 1991.

I'm told (I have no way to confirm this) that it is easier to get into Stanford as an outstanding athlete than NU. Vanderbilt, I can't say. Each school will allow lower scores for athletes... the idea that you want well-rounded kids... it's just a question about how much you lower academic test scores for athletes. Dukies usually have higher SAT/ACT than NU, but their athletes are lower. Personally, I think NU should lower academic testing requirements. I think the idea of competitive athletic program adds to the diversity of the campus.

And for the record, it's Medildos (from the Medill school of Journalism)... not McDildos. I think the latter you can get at the golden arches on a seasonal basis.

And furthermore, (I'm prepared for the public ridicule and backlash) KEEP UP THE NU TALK! I love it. I eat it up with a spoon. It's Chicago's team, man. The Cat's football team is a fun bunch. They have been a fun program to watch and I still maintain a Saturday afternoon Cat's game is the best sports entertainment value in ALL of Chicago.

Why is is that hard to believe? I remember my first phone number from the house I lived in until I was 8.

Catholic H.S. There were 434 kids in the school at the time. I believe they are around 900 now.

Amen, brother.... it seems like it will take a century to correct this outdated perception.

Your phone number was something that was impressed upon you by parents and school for safety reasons. That is not shocking. I remember mine as well.

The academic stats are throw away items. I wouldn't think they would hold sufficient significance to remember. You get the results in the mail, you smile, you forget. You don't even have to put the number on an application as they are automatically sent to several of your choices. When I say you, I mean me.

Obviously other people did find them important.
