Doc, I tend to agree with those here who say honesty is better than phoniness. I have no problem with a hard-working guy talking about buying a boat. i understand your discomfort but I prefer someone being real. Mac seems generally sensitive to what is happening in the lives of others and should be able to be open about his own situation. What I don't like is when he talks about what kind of TV gig he'd do etc. He, like North, is a generally average off the street guy who has been very lucky. He now is starting to believe his own BS that he is some sort of king of all media when he's lucky to have a high paid radio gig. It seems to me that he's a very average guy with very average talents who has been very lucky. This crap about him wanting North to be successful is phony too...why do that? Just stay real and if that means talking about buying a boat so be it...and thank the good Lord for your good fortune rather than thinking you deserve more.

I'm not asking anyone to be phony or to lie about their wealth. However, there is a huge difference between simply admitting to being well off when asked and pointing it out at every opportunity. Like I said above, I don't begrudge Mac at all and I actually applaud his success. It's just that I feel it's a bit crass to be advertising it at times like he does.

Fine Streedoc, point noted..........Now go get your shinebox.

I think Mac was quite obviously boasting when he wrote in the Sun Times that North turned down a contract which would have made him the 2nd highest paid sports yacker in the city at $750K.

I rolled my eyes here too but have a different problem with the other personal stuff. The issue I have with the boat thing, tv thing, weekend plans, old music, etc is you are talking about that more than sports. I took the Pepsi challenge this week starting on Wednesday and have been listening to B&B. I don't like their delivery very much and don't get their inside jokes. I have enjoyed their show more than I have MJH lately because they talk more about sports. I don't watch a lot of basketball but have liked their analysis. People are paying attention to hockey now and I heard your interview with Khabibulin. I'd like to hear more.

I think the jokes, entertainment and personal stories will come but the focus should be more sports oriented.

Mackey is a good winner. Nice frontrunner.

When he loses it's not his fault.

Spaulding makes good points, but with no Bears in the playoffs this time period really is the sports abyss. You can only break down the Eagles and Cardinals so much. I am not a hockey fan, but I'm glad that the Hawks are doing well. However, excessive hockey talk still makes me punch the button, and I know I'm in the majority there. I agree that MJH is talking more personal stuff now, but I'd almost rather here them kick around "Tivo vs. HD" than have them talk Bulls. I very much enjoyed the Jurko v. Harry yesterday, and got a kick out of all the emails taking Jurk to task. Either they're too stupid to realize that lamenting Jurko on his chiding of Harry is only going to increase such behavior, or they don't listen much.

That's bull. Lovie and Angelo have been saying and doing stupid things. There are moves to be made this offseason beause there is a lot wrong with this team. Tell me about the possibilites. The Sox haven't made any moves but the Cubs have.

2 professional sports teams are playing and I think it's a little goofy to say well it's my job to disuss sports but I don't like basketball so here let me tell you about the Flying Wasp.

I liked Ask MJH from a few weeks ago but it's not what I tune in for.

If Mac makes $400K (let's say), $15K on a boat would be like somebody making $100K dropping $3.5K on a plasma/blu-ray/surround sound system.

What's the big deal? ...and that's not even factoring in that his wife is a lawyer - so she's probably making decent coin.

And when he talks about his 'Allen Bros' steaks - more than likely him being a spokeperson for them probably means he's not paying for those steaks 3/4 of the time.

I'm not being a Danny Mac Ass Licker - but if it bothers you listening to people talk about what they feel, then listen to NPR or 780 if you wanna hear about 38,000 people getting laid off at Circuit City, Motorola and Hertz today.

Doc I don't Wright letters to Brad Pitt , Brian Urlacher, Bill Gates or whom ever and tell them to stop talking about boats , cars, tickets or anything else for that matter. I don't feel sorry for people who went out and bought $600,000 homes on a $50,000 a year salery and now figure out that BOY, I fucked up I can't afford this and now they have to down size or forclose.I have a soft spot in my heart for people who have lost their jobs but people went on the stupid the last 5 years and they are reapping what they sew now.

Mac shares his success with his friends as I witnessed the day he had 30 of us over to meet Bobby Hull. Mac paid Bobby a large sum to appear and paid for all the food and booze for that day and do you think for one second the guy asked anyone for a dime ??? The answer is NO.

They do a 4 hour show everyday and he wants to talk about buying a boat to fill in some time in the middle of the week on a cold Janurary day, so what...Buy it , he earns his money ,plus his lovly wife Sherri is an attorney and makes a good buck as well. I don't think by sharing an idea on the air puts anyone in a bad light and if anyone is upset because he makes a comment like that then they really need to take a look at themselves in the mirror and ask what there doing wrong and how can I better my life.

Your not a bad guy for posting it but I think a little over the top for thinking about what you have and others don't.

I'll never make what Mac's making but I don't have the talent to do what he does either or 25 years of radio behind me either.

I agree with all of what you said except for the blurb in the paper. That was not entertainment. That was a hey look at me ain't I grand statement the some people piss all over North for. North was once the highest paid host but it didn't make him great. Mac has worked to get where he is, and it is nice he shares it with others in his life. It's okay to toot his own horn if that is what he was going for. But I thought it was the type of thing he might roll his eyes at if somebody else did it. He has never come off puffy chested and boastful about it.

I don't begrudge anybody their success or salary. Neither have an affect on my life.

Rich, poor, middle clas - We're all equal in the eyes of strippers once we walk in the door. They're trying to hustle all of us. I tell the dumb ones I'm a congressman so they think I'm important and keep coming up to me. Sometimes I tell them I'm a Doctor. I like to change it up.

I don't care if Mac talks about his stuff or his wealth. Doesn't bother me.

Mac,

To start I want to be clear that I usually enjoy listening to MJH much more than B&B's acerbic show down the dial and that I have followed you since your start at The Score all those years ago. Part of this is probably due to the fact that I'm happy to see a local guy do good (I grew up in the Hessville neighborhood of Hammond while you're from next door Highland) and part of it's due to the fact that the few times I've met you, you've always seemed like a down to earth, good guy. I also don’t post much on CSFMB as I usually prefer to just read the opinions of others, however, over the last several months, I've taken note of something that has simply gotten under my skin to no end - that being your (and to a somewhat lesser extent Jurko & Harry's) habit of shining a light on your fiscal well being.

As an example, I believe it was 2 days ago when you took up several minutes of the show to inform us that you were in need of an "impulse buy" and that you were going to forego the Bulls game that night to stop by the Boat Show at McCormick Place to drop 12 to 13 grand on a boat. Now, while I don't begrudge anyone in this country to take the bull by the horns and work their way up to realize the American dream, it just seems to me that now is not the time for this kind of self-aggrandizing. Everywhere you look these days factories are idle or closed completely, masses of workers of all professions are being laid off and families are losing their homes due to the hard economic environment. But instead of showing any semblance of sensitivity to this dark reality of his listeners, you decide to fill time on air with your "impulse buy" dilemma. As if that weren’t bad enough, then Harry had to honestly wonder why people weren’t filling the United Center for the Bulls this season. He truly could not understand why the seats weren’t packed even after Jurko tried to point out that, at 60 bucks a ticket for the cheap seats, the cost was somewhat prohibitive for the average family these days. Hello Harry? Watch the news much? There’s this thing called a recession that is kicking most everyone in the balls economically and we simply can’t afford such luxuries as Bulls tickets or ski/fishing boats. And while Harry can almost be excused from his ignorance of the plight of us commoners due to his well-to-do upbringing, your recurring need to shove your good fortune under the noses of the audience is simply uncalled-for. Remember where you came from Danny.

In the end Mac, you’re the Chicago radio powerhouse these days, it’s your show, and you can do with it what you will. But just keep in mind all that I’ve said as you ponder the recent ratings dip the Afternoon Saloon has suffered. After all, if the show really were a “neighborhood corner tavern”, do you truly believe that you wouldn’t lose customers during hard times for parking your new Porsche right out front and showing off your new Rolex to all the laid off average Joes that pull a seat up at the bar?

You’ve said many times on your show Mac, that you guys are trying to create a virtual refuge from the world, a place where your listeners can come on a daily basis, have a few laughs and forget about their troubles. Unfortunately, as your success has increased it seems you guys have forgotten that basic premise as you regularly point out the various aspects of the good life while many who listen worry about just staying out of bankruptcy.

Well, these are just my thoughts on the matter and I’ll be the first to admit that my opinion may be a bit severe. After talking it over with friends of mine who listen though, I don’t feel I’m that far off. I hope you take this as it is intended, simply the view of one loyal listener without any intended malice. Someone that does not wish to see MJH go the way of the likes of Mike North and fall off their pedestal because they forgot how it was they came to be there in the first place.

Talking about the MINNOW got Danny whacked, I guess.

Wow. Just wow.

This is the last thing I wanted to see happen to Danny. I have enjoyed listening to him since he started at the Score and to think my one little email could bring him down is just ridiculous.

I'm sure he'll land on his feet somewhere else and do just fine, albeit at a lower pay grade. If anything, I hope this little dose of economic reality will remind him that, no matter our station in life, we are all beholden to that bitch we call Karma.
