WZ,

Though not bound by the FCC, are satellite outlets still not affected by sponsors, and groups/individuals that apply pressure to sponsors?

Why is appropriate behavior at work such a hard concept for some people to understand? No, Mike, I'm not in HR, and I don't need any unclinching. Nor do I make mountains out of molehills. I do run a business, I do have staff members and I am quite aware of my responsibilities as a manager. I also have worked for companies (not my current one) that have been sued for the actions of their employees who made sexist, racist or other inappropriate comments. If you think that calling someone a bitch in front of 34,000 listeners is a "molehill", then you are telling us a lot about yourself.

Ivan, you keep asking for "rules". Broadcasters don't need rules to tell them what is appropriate or inappropriate in human discourse any more than you need a rule book telling you what you can and can't say in your job. If any broadcaster needs a rule book of "acceptable speech", then they aren't smart enough to be on the air.

Spaulding, Just because previous inappropriate behaviors went unpunished does not mean future inappropriate actions should be allowed. New laws, rules and standards are set every day to address past problems. There is no question that broadcasters have been very lax in controlling some of their employees in the past. They may be late to the game, but what they are doing now in enforcing standards of appropriate behavior is no different than what most employers have been doing for decades. I also have a feeling you would feel a little differently if you were the target of Mac's ire and he publicly called you a bitch by name in front of 34,000 people.

Coast,
how is that different than saying Murph is a major A-hole, or Crede is a pussy in front of 34,000 listeners

No there not. Most stations specifically communicate that the views expressed by the hosts are not necessarily reflective of the company.

I normally agree with about 85% of what you write Coast, but on this one, I think you're being a little chicken-headed.

What if Mac called some guy a dick on the air?
Oh wait....he has.
this is all so stupid.

I didn't mean it seriously Coast. I can tell you're a smart guy, and I respect what you're saying. I realize that companies are sued on a regular basis for "inappropriate comments". (Here's the but part) But I'm just saying that companies usually go too far to "protect" the companies interest...and in the end it usually ends negatively for everyone involved.

The fact that our legal system allows too many frivolous lawsuits is probably more to blame (i.e. judge v. dry cleaner) & there's plenty of opportunistic people willing to sell out for a chance at a big payoff.... hmmmm, you listening spmack?

I would think that if someone is in the public eye, then they are fair game. The person he called out is not a public personality.

The main issue here, at least imo, is that he used her full name more than once when calling her a bitch. I believe the "rules" are different for "private" citizens.

But, regardless, the onus still falls on the "victim" to decide whether or not to press the issue. If the person feels stongly enough, he/she could sue for slander, or just have their semi-important husband call and strong-arm a company into handing down some sort of punishment.

Countless on-air personalities have been suspended at one point or another for speech that is deemed offensive. I guess they're all morons, right?

Once again Coast is wrong....

We'll just have to agree to disagree (I hate that cliche) on this one.

Here's a simple rule for on air guys--don't piss off or embarrass the boss. That one will usually keep you on the air.

Mike North called me, NSJ, and RodeoVann "JagBags", with audience in the hundreds. Is this comparing apples and apples?

I think NSJ's blue balls thread proves that Northy is a decent judge of character.

Your views on women Mustang are "enlightened" indeed.

If Mac had previous problems with her and directed someone on his staff to call her for info, then that sounds like the definition of insanity to me.

I think he's saying Mac knew what he was getting in to when he had someone call her.

I could be wrong and it would't be the first time (surprisingly).

I think Coast is basically right. There is a standard of decorum at the workplace, and radio broadcasts are the workplace for show hosts. You need to recognize sports radio for what it is- discussion by people paid to represent companies and given a certain amount of slack to deviate from that line- instead of what you want it to be- a free-wheeling exchange, including ad hominem attacks and profanity. That's what the board is for, you shitheaded Nazis.

Tangentially, I think the Mac the Martyr act is getting somewhat stale. How many more suspensions is he going to receive for actions he knows are inappropriate? I think much of the schtick is an attempt to parlay this career into a future national satellite radio gig. That's an abdication of responsibility to your listeners, IMO. MJH hasn't been the best sports discussion show in Chicago in quite some time, although they do regular discussion better than most others. As long as this act continues, I think the product is only going to get worse.

Seacrest,
That little guy at the top of the post is a winking emoticon - not wanking, of which you dissaprove.
It is often utilized in message board settings to indicate sarcasm, which is a form of humor that even us simple DGS folk can understand.

it is my understanding that this whole mess started when panazzo said that you can be a cubs fan AND a sox fan. mac disagreed and the discussion escalated into a shoving match. mac then called her a bitch, then hopped in his car on the way to terry boers house.
