I never thought I would ever hear Mac defending Sammy Sosa and Harry wanting nothing to do with it .

This is bizarre.

I never liked Sosa and I can understand fans who changed their opinions after his cheating and phony act was exposed. I'm struggling to understand why Mac doesn't get this.

because most of those same people cheered for sammy and bought many tickets during the 90s only because sammy sosa was playing.

you can dislike the man all you want, but you simply cannot argue with the numbers (steriods or not) and what he did for the cub

Harry's just pissed that he was gullible enough to buy the sideshow act.
On the field, Sosa WAS the Cubs for a decade when there was nothing around him.

Sure he was, but to anybody's knowledge Frank never has taken steroids or cheated. Sammie has cork and a swollen/shrunken head and body on his resume. Frank might be an ass, but he at least did it without cheating (as far as we know).

and liking thomas or not, sox fans appreciate what he did for the team. last year, he had about a 2 minute ovation before his first at bat back at comiskey ii.

mac was right. if texas were playing at wrigley, sosa would be getting pelted with garbage, and i dont mean the cubs pitching staff :p

Thomas had problems with the front office there; I don't think fans collectively hated him the way Cubs fans turned on Sosa.

I have nothing against Sosa. I hope he gets to 600 even if it's against the Cubs. 2004 I think was when I was just fed up with the guy.

It's an interesting comparison between Frank and Sosa because both were electric in their prime for their respective club; and each had the "superstar" quality--personality wise. Neither one helped their team win a championship, but in some ways, they were the best thing to see--even though the Sox were a better team than the Cubs were. Sosa was probably the ONLY thing to see.

But Sosa just became a total tool and 2004...that dark year, it'll forever live in infamy. It wasn't just Sammy but in his last few years there, he represents the bad rather than the good. It's not that I discount what he did--but like I'll tell anyone--don't tell me how to be a fan. If I wanted to boo the guy, I think I'd have every right. I'd be a hypocrite--well, guess what--what do you think 'fan' stands for?

When do you ever expect a fanatic to be logical or reasonable?

So, as easy as it is for Sox fans who loathe the Cub and loathe the Cub fan to say "You guys are hypocrites!" and want to rub it in or whatever...let Cub fans do/think what they want when it comes to Sammy. However, I am glad this series was put in Texas and not Wrigley.

Thomas may have been a dbag but he never really tried to conceal that fact. Sosa on the other hand played the nice guy routine in public but in reality he was by most accounts a selfish teammate and all around jerk.

I think Mac is way off on this one... and I can't believe I'm going to say this, but Harry's absolutely right. Cub fans were duped by Sosa. The regular Joe Average baseball fan was given a big charade by the Cubs, Sosa, and the local / national media. The truth finally comes out that the guy is a douche, a cheat, and a bad teammate and people felt robbed. It's only natural to be bitter about that. I'm not a Cub fan, but I certainly don't begrudge them for feeling bitter towards Sosa... if anything I feel the local media are the ones that should be hung out to dry, as they all played along with it... and that includes the talk radio stations.

Now, the Bonds and SF Giants situation is a whole different ball game. Should someday down the road Giants turn bitter towards Bonds, you could rightfully get all over them... talk about keeping your head buried in the sand. It's been well documented that Bonds is a douche, a cheat, and a bad teammate and the Giants fans just continue to take pride in this guy... what a joke.

I think people need to stop looking at athletes as regular people with feelings and pride and sportmanship. Although I don't want to paint with a broad brush and stuff every athlete into the wood chipper, but how many times have we heard, "It's a business."

Fans should see the athletes like employees of a company that they cheer for to do well. Don't fall in love with players (zimmer) because your going to get shit on. Cheer while they are on your team then root like hell when they are on the opposing team.

Don't buy jerseys with names on the back because you'll see it as a big waste of money when the player jumps ship for more money or a chance to win (Nomar jersey owners). I'm not trying to tell you what to do, do whatever you want, but don't whine when it happens with your guy.

he hit 2 HRs. nobody was booing after the first one. after the 2nd, im not sure if they were booing him, jon garland for pitching like shit, the sox for not scoring runs, or all of the above

I honestly see both "sides" of this argument being legitimate for the different reasons that Mac and Harry brought up yesterday afternoon... and in the end, it will always seem like you're giving away an award to the tallest midget in the room.

Sosa is neither.
He allowed the team and the media to build up his image when it benefited him financially, and later he became bitter when the same people brought him down cause his fall from grace became the better story. He was used, but he is smart enough to know he was being used and went along with it anyway.

I suspect the real Sosa is somewhere between the two extremes the media has crafted for us. I would be willing to bet now that Sammy's been humbled, none of his Texas teammates would badmouth him.

I find it strange that Mac would rip on Cub fans for turning their backs on Sosa. Didn't Mac last year rip on Podsednik calling him twinkletoes and/or a fairy? Obviously Podsednik doesn't compare to Sosa in terms of career numbers but Podsednik was a key in the Sox hot start in 2005 and hit arguably one of the two biggest homers in the past 50 years or so for the Sox in game two of the World Series. But Mac seemed to forget the contributions Podsednik made and ripped him on more than one occassion last year. It seemed more personal than baseball related. And Podsednik doesn't seem to be the selfish person that Sosa is.

And I recall Mac getting on Buerhle in 2003? for saying he would rather not pitch in the Metrodome. Didn't Mac question Buerhle's manhood? Of course now Mac is best buddies with Buerhle. I guess it is ok for Mac to flip flop on players but Cub fans, sorry, can't change your feeling toward any players.
