Wow, Bob Costas came out of the gate strong with his first show on HBO this year.

> Touching piece on Tomlinson

> Very solid interviews with Gene Upshaw and some retired players on the retired players not getting enough money/assistance.

> Insightful piece on Roger Goodell.

> And a truly sad piece on Earl Campbell. Man alive, I loved watching that battering ram SOB play back in the day. He's morphed into a handicapped Isaac from The Love Boat. It was nice to see the nice stuff that Tony Dorsett had to say about a guy one year younger than him, and interesting interview with Larry Johnson, as he is of the same running style as the Texas Rose. God bless you Earl Campbell.

I feel like tonight is Christmas Eve - I can't wait for the season to kick off tomorrow in downtown Indiana. Actually, it's 12:10, so I guess the opening day of the NFL is upon us. :)

When you really think about it, it's not that far off.

He may have the same general style but there is no one who runs like Earl.

By the way Grid, is the cbfans forum down? I have not been able to get on for about a month.

I'll add a thumbs down to "the Duke" who just told me during a sportscenter update, that the first round on the BMW championship is underway in Coal Valley
I guess he's too busy with the US Open tennis to bother looking up the location of Cog Hill.

And a big thumbs up to Wheaton Zach for quoting Captain Dudley Moore (James Cromwell) from L.A. Confidential, one of the best suspense thrillers of the '90s. Nice job, "boyo."

I think Norv Turner will do a good enough job of holding off the Chargers

You liked it better than Gladiator?
I didn't care for The Insider - too long and drawn out. Typical Michael Mann flick....

"Gladiator" didn't do it for me...as far as epics go, it was one step above "The Patriot" which isn't saying much. I thought his performance in "LA Confidential" was his best so far I've seen. "Beautiful Mind" comes in close...

Agreed with the Michael Mann criticism, except I didn't think "Manhunter" suffered the same formula.

Even though I liked Heat, I thought they EASILY could have carved a half hour out of that flick. The love interest of Robert DeNiro (Amy Brenneman?) should have had about 5 minutes of face time.

Disagree.
In Heat they needed to develop that relationship to establish DeNiro's willingness to leave anything and anyone behind.

She should have had a relationship with DeNiro like Bridget Fonda had with him in Jackie Brown.

And a big thumbs down to Mac, for calling James Cromwell's character "Cpt. Dudley MOORE." C'mon dude, Arthur the cocktailing British buffoon wasn't running Mickey Cohen's rackets, but Cpt. Dudley SMITH was.

I understand the confusion, seeing as its one of your favorites movies!

He was too busy smiling and giggling while typing as he thought about James Cromwell's celebratory Christmas ways in the background of another scene.
