Just got done grilling some meat from Allen Brothers. Actually the first products I have ever ordered from them, based solely on listening to the show. Couldnt have been more delicious.

I also ordered some buffalo ground beef and skirt steaks, look forward to trying them as well

Doesn't Allen Brothers freeze their meat in order to ship it? If so, I would suggest spending your money at a place like Fox & Obel or a high-quality butcher shop. Freezing meat causes ice crystals to form inside it; ice crystals destroy the cellular structure of meat; collapsed cellular structure, in turn, leads to poor texture. That's why none of these high-priced mail order meat places are worth the money.

Yes, but never fall for "fresh seafood." It was frozen on the boat.

I think it would be much much worse if Allen Brothers did not freeze their meat and simply shipped it to their customers.....How do you like you maggot filet? medium-rare?

Umm, yeah, that's why you should go to a butcher shop instead of getting your meat by mail order. Even fresh high-level choice will be superior in flavor and texture to the much more expensive frozen "prime" beef Allen Brothers sells.

Blasphemer. Try the bone-in ribeye and if it disappoints, TM, I'll pay for the steaks for you.

Unfortunately TM, butchers are not located on every corner in the western suburbs....any recommendations would be appreciated

I buy all my seafood in the aquariums at a pet store. Nothing is better than fresh goldfish.

Jim's Meats in Darien is pretty good. There is one in Hinsdale but I can't think of the name.

I've also enjoyed the stuff we get from whole foods and I think that is fresh.

I refuse to buy, prepare, inspect, in any way handle, and especially eat Jim's meat. That's just a dumbass name for a butcher shop.

I think this was covered somewhere else but where in the city can I pick up chunks of wood for my kettle. I know Backyard BBQ in Wilmette but was looking for something in the city so I can stop on the way home from work.

Come on,KV... I told TM to buy 'em, try 'em, and if he didn't like them, I would pay him for the price of the product. I have "an allowance" with them, yes, but this would not have counted on that. I'm pretty confident he'll LOVE the steaks. As for butchers.... try Howard & Sons in Munster or Southside Bantam in my hometown of Highland. Go ahead.... proceed with the Indiana jokes as it's been awhile.

I was fortunate enough to win AB from Jurko vs Harry a couple times and I was very pleased with the meat (especially the filets). In fact, I still have some in the freezer to grill. But when I first opened that catalog my eyes almost shot out when I saw the prices.

Mac, get back to work!!!
When you post during the show, is that during a break or during one of Harry's incoherent ramblings? :)

Come on, Mac. Don't take the bad prognostic weekend out on me. It's just some friendly ball-busting.

As for the Indiana jokes, I was born and raised in LaPorte, so I've got nothing. Although, I was smart enough to get out!

Fatha and Motha get all of their meat from Allen Brothers. Neither one would be caught dead listening to sports talk, so they "discovered" it on their own. I always enjoy an invitation to dinner. Since they don't eat leftovers I try to overestimate my hunger to take some home. Even better is on a Sunday when I can double mooch a breakfast AND a dinner. Nothing brings me back to my youth like getting to the house at about 11 a.m., eating a huge breakfast, watching the Bears and then wondering what's for dinner at about 3:30.

I'm not saying that mail-order meat is horrible, just that it's generally not as good as the fresh stuff you can get at a really good butcher shop or an upscale grocery store like Fox & Obel. And the mail-order stuff is also usually way more expensive than stuff you can find locally, so you're paying a lot more for meat that at best is the same, but more likely worse, than what you'll find around you by being a smart shopper.
