Are they insinuating that cocaine is a performance enhancing drug? I mean yes its a stimulant, to an extent, but I don't think it would help you with skills like precision ball striking. Then again, I've never played tennis while doing coke. Am I missing the boat? |

I don't get it either. She did some blow. So what? I guess they test for it like they do in baseball, basketball and football because they want a clean sport. But it doesn't help her play tennis. Grennie asked if her records should be stricken? Why? LT, Gooden and countless others did Coke? It doesn't help you play better. Jeez. Plus, nobody cares about her anyway. So why is it a big story? |

I think the WTA or ATP or whatever has a zero tolerance policy for illicit substances. Apparently, those orgs aren't even aware Hingis failed multiple tests for cocaine metabolite or whatever. There must be more to the story and she's exiting the stage before shoes start dropping all over the place. McEnroe probably did play matches on coke, but then it was a higher quality stuff back then and they probably didn't test for it. Although coke, unlike weed, leaves your system super-quick. 96 hour half-life and you can't detect it in a standard urine test after 2 days. So she's either a habitual user or was doing rails right before the match that resulted in the test(s) detecting it. |

Martina Hingis, one of the greatest players of her generation and winner of three Australian Open titles, will forever wear the taint of a drug cheat. The Swiss five-time Grand Slam champion left the sport yesterday after revealing she had tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon and is contemplating not taking any action to clear her name. Hingis, who denies having taken the drug, said she provided a positive urine sample after her straight-sets, third-round defeat by American Laura Granville. Hingis has won $US20million in prizemoney during her career, but the prizemoney she collected at her last Wimbledon might have to be handed back. "The onus now falls to the athlete to show either there was an error made in the sampling - the way it was collected or analysed - or to present any mitigating circumstances," Richard Ings, chief executive of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, said. If Hingis fails to do this, she will be banned for two years, whether she is retired or not, and will have to forfeit her Wimbledon prizemoney of $US50,422 and the 90 WTA rankings points. The story could have been different if Hingis had been tested 24 hours after she was bundled out of Wimbledon, rather than on the day of the defeat. "If it had been a day later then it would have been classified as an out-of-competition test and stimulants like cocaine are not prohibited out of competition," Ings said. "It is not banned under the WADA code because you are not trying to enhance your performance with a stimulant in between matches because you can't bascially. On match days it would pump you up and make you more you more aggressive and give you more energy - that's why it is tested." Both Hingis's 'A' and 'B' urine samples were found to be positive for cocaine metabolites. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/st ... 22,00.html |

That really makes me less likely to believe her. Of course someone could have adulterated both samples but failing both samples convinces me that the inner cokehead in her is lying about this, and that she knows she's guilty so she doesn't want to be dragged through the mud. She's just trying to run away from the problem by retiring. Unfortunately it is what she is going to be remembered for now, like Oksana Baiul being remembered for her DUI-related car crash. |

Actually, I remember her for being deceptively unattractive. |
