Mac--"a station like 'GN that could use an at least known entity in PM drive (the Cubs are they're only PM drive attraction -- ever"

Yet they continue to beat you.

Mac-" Keep living in a world in which Steve Cochran and Dave Kaplan are major players. Fact is, without the Cubs, 'GN disappears in the adult male demo."

So you must be saying that a LOT of women listen to them- men too or they wouldn't kick your ass overall.

Mac--"Your last statement may have some truth in it, SID... but that doesn't change the fact that my statements about North or what's happened at 'GN aren't spot on. Check it out."

I did check it out and found something very surprising. With 2 all sports 24/7 stations, the number one rated sports show is---

Sports Central with Kaplan on WGN.

Sorry Mac, but I think most advertisers would like the largest number of listeners, maybe not the strip clubs, DUI lawyers and those fine real estate and mortgage con artists that seem so abundant on the score and 1000.

I'm not sure this is true. Aren't men 25-54, the most likely to respond to advertisers ?

Kaplan's ratings are good -- and have been good. AT NIGHT. Ratings at night mean little. He doesn't have a fraction of our listeners. Radio usage dives enormously after 6 p.m. Radio stations rarely use night or overnight numbers to sell commercial inventory. Posting numbers is most important between 6a - 7p. Those are called "dayparts" and they are the most important shifts. I like David Kaplan and I think he is a warm, competent evening host. But if Kappy were as highly rated as you're trumpeting, he'd be a major player in that 6a - 7p world. PLus, ratings do not indicate the overall size of your audience. It is next to impossible for evening shows to possess the same size audience as in other dayparts.

And I have no problem being desirous of my "niche audience." We get bonus money based on MEN 25-49. Steve Cochran can have every housewife, every female listener available and it wouldn't effect my mood or my show's success. When our sales types sit down with the beer companies, the car dealers, etc., those sponsors want to know one thing: how are they rated WITH MEN? In our case, the answer is, and has been for more than three years now, very highly. Five No. 1 finishes among adult MEN since the winter book of '05. That has re-written Chicago sportradio history, my friend.

Now go get your shinebox.

The theme song for MJH should be "It's Raining Men".

Good tip, Good Dolphin. We may do that.

My comments, Beardown, are not meant to slight anybody. It's just that 6a - 7p numbers are far more attractive to sponors/agencies. I think what Carm, JD and Hoody are doing at night is nothing shy of terrific. This show would play well ANYWHERE in the schedule. But... we have an obligation to carry a high volume of network programming. I really missed the boys at 7 last night while commuting. Having said that, I gave PTI a chance and it kept my interest for the final 15 minutes of my drive.

I know Mac. Just kidding. You've said before that night time ratings mean nothing. I guess that means night time hosts have no leverage to ask for raises.

GFY you POS. I'll go by my statement that Kaplan has the number one rated sports show in the city. Maybe you should check it out.

BTW, nice to see that the score beats the snot out of 1000 in billings. Your sales guys must not be doing so well.
Something within your bullshit doesn't add up, but no surprise from a blowhard like you. It amazes me me how you, obviously the biggest name in Chicago radio, is so unknown to so many. Your pathetic insults seem fitting from a mid 40's guy trying to re-live his glory days of high school sports, just another failed jock who thinks he is a sports god. Go have another temper tantrum and get suspended again tough guy. You do lead Chicago in that.

I suppose I do lead the league in suspensions. I am Ogie Ogelthorpe. Would it make you feel better, SID, if I took a tiny piece of my bonus check and purchased some new coloring books for you?

I think Pappy would beat you in suspensions if he worked for your company Mac. He works for the much more liberal CBS outfit. Plus, Mitch ignores him just like radio listeners. Everybody over there is just counting the days until that contract finally runs out and they can get rid of that unproductive no talent.

Never heard of this douchebag. His listeners are either shitting the bed and wearing drool bibs and or are Cubs fans if he does his show on WGN. WHICH BY THE WAY ARE ONE IN THE SAME.

Mac made a solid point that after 6pm the listeners either are eating dinner or switch over to T.V..If there aint shit on the tube I'll throw Carm and Hood on. The old folks homes tend to leave WGN on thru out the day and night to give the elderly something to fall asleep too or better yet Nap too. Check your depends and get a clue..Matter of fact at the next MJH remote show up in your Gabe Kaplan t-shirt and I'll buy you a shot of Malox.

What fact- Kaplan's show is the number one rated sports show in the city, period. Billing fact- sc ore beats the shit out of 1000 in billings? Those are simple facts.

I don't really care but I don't think that is a fact. Kaplan may have great numbers at night however there are far less listeners. If that is true while he may pull in say, 5 percent of the listeners as compared to MJH 2 percent, the 2 percent represents a greater number of people. I would consider more listeners to be the test of the rating.

I guess it could be the same as when someone talks about average but doesn't tell you whether they are taking the mean, median or mode to determine average.

I met Kpalan once (button 48 please). At the time I had ZERO idea of who he was. My impression was that he felt he was doing everyone in the room a favor by being there. I wasn't impressed.

I think WGN always has inflated numbers. I think a large percentage of their listenership are in homes where an elderly person, living alone, is dead and hasn't been discovered yet. There they lie, dead and rotting, with WGN 720 on in their homes.

Once the smell of these dead people reaches the neighbors they will be discovered, buried, and their radios will be turned off. Thus reducing WGN's ratings. Eventually, once many of these dead WGN listeners are discovered, we will have a more accurate view of their listenership.

SID, nobody's making excuses. They're asking you to compare apples to apples.

Smooth jazz crushes sports talk in Chicago. You know what that means to advertisers looking for the young male demo? Absolutely nothing.

And before you slam somebody for getting beat by a gospel station, make sure you don't accidentally slam your own argument too. According to Arbitron, WGRB beat WMVP in two of the last four quarters. And it beat WSCR in... two of the last four quarters.

No excuses douchebag...If there is anyone on this board that takes Mac more to task than me , PLEASE stand up and be counted..But when a moron such as yourself makes a dumbass point about a guys ratings whom none of us even heard of I'll come to Mac's defense..Make your point and don't be a jagoff to the guy and maybe someone here will give a flying fuck about what your saying... Correctamundo!

Lets say there at 1000 people listening to thier radio at 2pm, and of that 150 are tuned into MJH. Thats 15%. When Kaplan is on, lets say there's 100 people with thier radio on, and 25 are tuned to WGN. Thats 25%.

However, thats far more radios tuned to MJH even though the numbers and/or ratings would say Kaplan is higher. If you want to break that down to percentages, MJH would have a 600% edge in listenership over WGN. So maybe Kaplan wins the battle, but ESPN wins the war.
