Post subject:  Breakdown of the Hourly Ratings

Ted Cox breaks it down in today's column - I think North is doomed too btw..... Now with Dahl and Brandmeier in the mornings - he's probably gonna lose the listeners he had that preferred to just hear about Chicago vs. national sports:

The Bears rallied at the end of the season in December, but that's nothing compared to the charge WMVP 1000-AM put on.

The station rose from a 1.3 percent share of the overall audience 12 and older this summer to a 1.7 share in the quarterly fall Arbitron ratings book, moving past its all-sports competitor, WSCR 670-AM, which slumped slightly from 1.6 to 1.5.

True, WMVP benefited from its syndicated ESPN Radio baseball playoff coverage in October, but it really came on in December, after the Bears were all but done and as the Bulls were tanking.

It was an unlikely time for a local sports-talk station to thrive, but that's what WMVP did.

"I wish I could give you a logical answer, but I really believe it's just great radio," said WMVP program director Justin Craig. "People tune in for personalities, and we've got great personalities here."

As I wrote at the end of the year, the state of sports-talk radio is as strong as I've ever heard it in Chicago, and the numbers bear that out. In the target demographic of men age 25-54, WMVP pulled a 3.9 share this fall to the Score's 3.2, but both were up from the summer, when WMVP led 3.2 to 2.9.

I know it galls the Score's Mike North to be losing to a syndicated program in mornings, but the fact is ESPN Radio's Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic do a great show, and Greenberg makes sure to keep his Chicago ties fresh. What's more, Tom Waddle and Marc Silverman are beginning to gel from 9 a.m. to noon.

"Those guys are building chemistry," Craig said.

The way I hear it, Waddle is putting Silvy at ease, and they're having more fun chiding each other. I'm not sure if Silvy remembers or even ever heard Wally Phillips, but he's developed this droll little matter-of-fact response to Waddle's occasional inanities that reminds me of Phillips' deadpan replies to his own little sound bites he'd throw in.

WMVP was third in the market in the male demo with a 5.4 share from 6-10 a.m., while North pulled a 3.1. But Mike & Mike also did a 5.4 from 5-9 a.m., meaning Waddle and Silvy held up in the first hour of their show.

From 9 a.m. to noon, the Score shaved them, 3.0 to 2.9, but that's Mike Mulligan and Brian Hanley, who do a pretty great show themselves, following North.

The Score did best from noon to 2 p.m., when Mike Murphy trounced the syndicated Mike Tirico, 3.7 to 1.8. "This is the first book for Mike Tirico," Craig pointed out.

True, but it's also true that Tirico's show is so dull he makes the departed Dan Patrick sound excited. So Murph gets bragging rights over all the others hosts at the Score.

Both stations excelled in afternoon drive, but WMVP was well out in front. Benefiting from a revived Dan McNeil after back surgery and a more open field with the departure of Steve Dahl for mornings, Mac, John Jurkovic and Harry Teinowitz did a top-ranked 5.9 share in the demo to the second-place 4.9 posted by Dan Bernstein and Terry Boers at the Score -- two great shows doing great ratings.

Maybe Craig is right when he stated this as he flipped his backpack over his shoulder: It's as simple as that. But now comes the winter doldrums, so let's see if personality can weather the struggling Bulls and Blackhawks until pitchers and catchers report for spring training.

A couple of things I think Ted was off about is 1 that who listened to the baseball playoff's and that Dahl didn't leave untill just a few weeks ago and MJH beat the guy a number of times in the ratings.

Rumblings are that when North is done B&B might move to morning drive.Any truth to that Mackey?

A) Cubs fans listened to baseball playoffs - and don't kid yourself into thinking that people wouldn't rather listen to baseball playoffs vs. Blackhawks hockey or whatever the Score trotted out there in October.

B) Dahl influenced the last month of the ratings period - but you're right, it had a minimal effect on the last ratings book, but will have a pretty major influence on the AM Drive Time Ratings (the score will take a hit) and the PM Drive Time Ratings (both 670 and 1000 should do fine IF they talk more than sports)

Reaffirms that Murph does have a solid listenership. People who think him a POS will have to presume he'll stay there long-term.

Is Tirico more boring than Dan Patrick? I don't think so, but they both do a light-content show. His rotating guest hosts aren't helping...

Tirico's show is brutally slow paced, and the very essence of 'vanilla'.

I don't mind though, as it's a two hour window for me to grab a bite to eat.

First off you think the Cubs flagship would of gotten the ears of their fans and if I remeber correctly the Cubs were 3 and done , so I find it hard to measure 3 games to be a ratings booster.

My point is the MJH and B&B show are dam good shows on their own merit and most critiques seem to want to find other reasons for the success of the shows and I give Mac a ton of credit for acknowledging the talent behind the glass because like I said before, those guys are a major reason things run so good. I was blown away the day Eddie and I sat with those guys in studio and watched them fly the plane.I can only descibe it as an air traffic control center with many more distractions and a 300lbs guy walking in every few minutes to shit his pants.

I assume Mac pays them the bonus he mentions out of his own pocket which is pretty fucken cool on his part. Wondering how much he drops on the boys?

Maybe Cub fans wanted to hear a real color man, and not the glorified mascot that is Ron Santo

Let's not fool ourselves Costanza, we know the blind love we all have for Ronnie and the lemming type of loyalty most Cubs fans shower upon people like Ronnie Woo-WOO- , SANTO, AND any other nauseating thing that comes along with being a Cubs fan which I happen to be one of.

I find to be disgusting that my baseball teams off the field news this off season has been the lowering of the field by the Sox grounds keeper and ticket raping the fans once again.

That was the interesting thing for me as well Beebo. Murph has been the most universally disliked talent by people on this board. There are a few of us who are fans, but that number is limited. Every radio personality seems to be hoping for his demise, yet the guy keeps on chugging along with good numbers in a wide array of time shifts. He may not be the cornerstone of a station, but it sure seems like you can plug him in anywhere and get a show that has listeners and never embarasses management.

Guys like Mac, drinky and the legion of former producers and co workers who signed on as guests may not respect his product, but he must be providing something that people enjoy.

My former next door neighbor was a big fan of Murphy. I asked him one time why and his basic retort was 'Sure he's a one trick pony, but he doesn't try and hide it and just focuses on it.' I guess this is a fair assesment. By the way, my neighbor was a Sox fan so I am guessing he would just swear at the radio all the time. :-)

There is no money. But when we die, on our deathbed, we will receive total consciousness. So we got that going for us.

Actually, all three guys are very generous with ratings bonuses.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words Stu. Wish we could take credit for the success of the show. But we can't. Anyone who is a salesman knows it's easier to sell when the product is good. Same thing with producing.

Of course who am I to deflect credit? WE ROCK!!!!!

As long as none of them pass a scientology card to you, something is always > nothing.

The AM def belongs to AM 1000. But B&B kick the afternoon saloon any day of the week. I used to be a big fan of the guys, but man the more I turn it on during my 65 minute ride home, the more they sound more and more like the north morning show. Always yapping about nothing really other than sports. Some of their interviews are ok, but man shut up already about stupidness that has nothing to do with sports or things going on.

Quick word of advice:

Best not for the newbies to immediately come embroiled in political arguments. It never ends well. FYI

It amazes me that you honestly judge people on knowledge of anything based on posts on a message board. Wow. I hear ya, not trying to start fights but at the same time because some dude has spent his past 4 years trolling this forum he can come out and attack me because "im new" and I dont get to respond...and whoever said something about like it is now, I couldnt agree more. The current repubs and dems all blow.

I've spent a year and a half here and everyone thinks I'm a moron so it has nothing to do with time here. Maybe we can give the board a coke and we can all be as one.

I actually like some of Ron Paul's ideas (smaller government in particular) but I have yet to hear him give a credible explanation for the racist comments contained in his newsletter. I believe if he were a serious candidate (in terms of actual chance to win) this would have been a major issue for him.

True, but he didnt write those he has already stated that. His campaign site refers to it. He ha more minority and African American support than any other GOP candidate too.
