Before I get to questions/comments... a few random thoughts.

With the Bulls and Blackhawks in the tank, there will be more non-sports discussion on the show in the next couple months. Yeah, I know there are other teams in the NBA and NHL, but this is town is strongly provincial, especially with hoops and pucks.

If you haven't heard DeFalco, Dickerson and Hood yet.... you should. This show sounds terrific and I have come around to preferring the three-man booth.

There is vacation time coming up in February and again in March, plus we're pre-empted for NCAA buckets the first weekend, so you've been given a heads up.

Satellite radio is not going to go away...only get more popular.

Here we go....

Peter Puck expressed a strong disdain for Chet Coppock and asked for an explanation on CC's presence on ESPN 1000.

I am not the program director, but if I were, I also would have a place for Coppock. Several reasons. He appeals to a different demo than all the other shows, which are hosted by younger guys. Coppock was King in this town for a long time and for those who enjoy his work, he's got weekend shows and as a sub during the holidays, illness, etc. It's not like we have an excess of older guys (that would be the Score). Chet also is very good for our sales department when he goes on calls to try to help close deals. Maybe he's lost a few MPH off his fastball, but he still has a strong on-air presence and that's not something that can be taught.

Linda S. wants to know why the 6:00 hour is referred to as "the post game" when there is no game that precedes it. Additionally, Killer V expresses an interest in some Silvy/Waddle highlights being added to the mix.

I have not had input with "the post game show." Not with hosts, nor with content. It is my understanding sales can move inventory if it's presented as "more MJH." The only time I effect MJH post is by occasionally suggesting a segment go in it, or not go in it. Depending on what time we had a good interview, I may suggest a place in the 5:00 hour and not the post game show. The reason is we are graded (most) on what happens between 3 and 6. If we have a good Mike Holmgren interview at 2:20, chances are excellent it will appear in the 5:00 hour so we get "credit" for it during the critical 3-6 slot.

Darkside wonders if I am still a Brewers fan.

I never was, really. That doesn't mean I won't be wearing my Brewers jersey in Wrigleyville, however, when the Cubs open the year with them. Why? No.1, I'm a sometimes obnoxious White Sox fan. No.2, Harry needs to be taunted. No.3, I like the reaction it gets. It never ceases to amaze me how some people have such an over-the-top reaction to another person's rooting interests. You'd think there were more important reasons to gnash teeth, but as long as that's all it takes, that's the role I'm willing to play.

spmack is curious about my once strained relationship with Mike North... and wonders why North and I now seem to "be in bed with each other."

Fair enough. As Good Dolphin accurately recalled, North and I willingly participated in congratulatory calls to each other (my 20-year anniversary, his Chicagoland sports hall of fame induction). My differences with Mike are professional, not personal. I always had fun spending time with Mikey and get a kick out of him. His business judgment has been questionable and it irritated the shit out of me when he orchestrated the breakup of the Monsters and maybe the Heavy Fuel Crew, but my disdain is more for the management team that green lighted those moves. Those suits no longer are managing sports radio outfits in Chicago and that is a good thing. I like Mike, Be-Be, Fred and the MNMS staff. No ulterior motives. I'm not thinking about partnering with him or antyhing like that... I just enjoy the cat.

RodeoVann is on the "next partner(s)" train and wants to see my "wish list."

I haven't spent any time thinking about (since suspended last summer) and that's healthy. There is a lot of time left on my deal and, after finishing first among adult men in the fall book, I'm an idiot if I take my eye off the prize and think about anything other than stacking successful books. It also is foolish to not have some sort of contingency plan, but I have no predominant thoughts or wishes at this time.

Mr. Buttermaker wonders why I have such a "hard on" for Steve Dahl.

That's overstating it, Mr. B. Dahl was a terrific role model for me (professionally only) in the late '80s to early '90s when I was at the Loop. I also learned how NOT to treat people by observing his act. It makes me sad that he resorted to lying (about things I said or did at the '05 World Series, sitting the row behind him) to move the meters. He also has cried repeatedly and publicly about my being featured more prominently than he is on the Allen Brothers website. That's a sad commentary on his life. I recently questioned his decision to interview Drew Peterson and contemplate a "Win A Date With Drew" promotion. I guess I have a problem with making celebrities out of wife abusers (and that's a fact). No hard on, though. Just sadness.

Frank Coztansa is curious about new bits, new segments, contributors, etc.

We like all of the ingredients already employed. Clayton. Plesac. King. Griffith. Levine on baseball. Dickerson on Bears. Who Do You Love? seems to get a tweaking every year... and that's okay. We've agreed to spend a little less time negotiating annual Sox-Cubs bets on the air. We're going to both training camps again in March. Our annual "Manniversary" and golf outing are being scheduled. We'll add some things as they come to us (I really liked the first run of "Which Car Deserves the 2-Iron More?") but games and bits need to be cultivated naturally, not just slapped together for the sake of "a new bit." If it truly is "tavern time," it can't be contrived.

Kujoe 7 asks what a man should be more afraid to admit, enjoying pro wrestling or admitting he plays fantasy football.

Equally teenage-esque. But who cares? Whatever it takes to feel young and alive. Hobbies are personal and I'm not in the business of telling others how to spend their idle time. I have played fantasy football for a long time and I'm getting a little tired of it, but chances are good I'll be at the draft table again come August, wondering just how good Brody Croyle is going to be.

Mac,

I am wondering how the back is doing? Have you been able to strengthen it to any great degree yet? Are you going to be able to get back to golfing and other activities outdoors, come spring?

Also- how are you doing with regards to having given up cigarettes? Are you still butt free?

I hope all is well with both subjects and can't wait till next month, when pitchers and catchers report. Got a feeling it's going to be a fun summer on the North side of town.

Thanks, Mac. I figured you didn't care for the Brewers, you were just trying to aggrivate the Cubs fans during their playoff rush. My sister does stuff like that. Pretty cool.

And whether or not to draft Fred Taylor in the 8th round.

+1. I can just picture it now...Barney Rubble running around carrying chocolates in one hand, and a bottle of Cuervo in the other while in full Brewers getup chiding the Tiny one at the Emily Barr Center.

Candid reponses as always sir, Gracias

I enjoy the sports talk on the show, but it sounds like I'll be taking a vacaction if this is the case.

Why, B.D.? How many times should we say or listen to callers say "The Bulls have no leadership... no inside presence, etc." Have you no other interests? I know it's a sports format, but when the situation dictates, we'll go pop culture and I think, like with sports, we have three very different opinions on what's good and what's crap.

I hear Anne Maxfield is available. Maybe some political talk with her? I understand this was very successful before...

I would like some political talk mixed it while we're in this sports lull. Especially considering the election is not as boring as it has been in the past.

I would say although it is a dead period with the Bulls in the tank, at the same time, it's a challenge to find sports related topics that capture interest. I'm sure a lot of the posters here can give the show some direction, and you guys can still continue to mix in the off-topics things that you do today.

I listen to a lot of talk radio during the day to get me through, and I listen to different shows for different reasons. I listen to you guys for the entertainment value you bring in discussing sports, and I don't mind some social commentary, but if it gets to the point where the show is talking about Super Tuesday/Politics (for example) as a main topic , there are other shows that are dedicated to that subject in the same way yours is to sports with analysts on to talk about that.

Pop culture discussion is going to draw/keep more listeners than some sports topics now. February and early March are called 'The Sports Abyss' for a reason. I'm sick of hearing about the Bulls...there's only so many ways you can say they suck. Not enough people care about hockey. Its not quite time for baseball chatter yet. Some golf chatter is ok, but its hard to bring the fire and the passion regarding the PGA on the radio. The NHL and NBA All-Star games do not deserve airtime. I'm sure there will still be plenty of sports chatter, but "unplugging" the show for any and all topics is quite appropriate, if not necessary, during this time of the year.

Nonsense. The best All Star game used to be NHL with the skills competitions. Now, it's Baseball with their HR contests. The party after the NBA All-Star game, I hear, is killer.

You're absurd for thinking that. All Star games suck in general. Baseball's is the tallest midget.
