In another thread, No Clever Moniker wrote: A bit self-serving, eh Mac? Where do you get your research data? Funny how during this time of year we get NBA and College hoop scores and coverage across all media outlets. If what you say is true then you wouldn't have updates or interviews or the need for any coaches shows. If your data was real then the other sports talk shows would do the same and not talk hoops (you used the same argument when at 'SCR). The UC regularly fills with "white suburbia" for Bulls games but nobody wants to talk about it? If that's your definition of your target audience then it might explain one thing. Basketball/hockey ignorance explains the other. You're hanging your hat on scrolled scores, coaches' shows and the 20,000 people who attend Bulls games? I gotta go Col. Nathan Jessup on you, NCM: "Is that what we came here to discuss? Phone bills and footlockers?" I'm trying to build the biggest audience I can. The 20,000 who attend Bulls games are a drop in the bucket. There are more than 7 million potential listeners in Chicagoland who WON'T attend a Bulls game this year. And why? It is not interesting to many. My job is not to create interest, but to reflect it. If you want to join Nas and enjoy B&B because Bernstein can diagram plays employed by the Phoenix Suns, have at it. I'll keep moving the meters... keeping in mind what the masses want to hear. You would be correct if you said I'm NBA illiterate. But, Mister, I know my audience. And I want to keep it larger than everyone else in PM drive. Now... back to the Convention Center for Commissioner Goodell's newsconference and another peek at Sunday's prop bets. |

Thank you Mac for not bitching about the weather in Arizona. They said that we were going to get 3-6 inches of snow but with the snow drifting it seems like a lot more.... oh, I don't care about basketball either.... |

Boy, how ridiculous of Bernstein to actually know something about one of the 4 major sports |

Your comprehension skills could use some work, Baku. I didn't say imply what Bernstein knows is ridiculous. I said it doesn't have mass appeal. By the way... who is the guy in the Timberwolves jersey on your avatar? |

MJH have not had a ton of NBA chatter, really ever, and they have been #1 how many times? If it ain't broke.. |

MJH don't need to talk about basketball too much. None of them are really into it, and it just seems awkward when they do, especially when the Bulls suck, which they do. |

Your right, sports knowledge can't beat your show's failed attempts at humor with the unfunny comedian and those terrific parodies you specialize in. Your becoming as big a blowhard as your buddy North.

Will the Pau Gasol steal by the Lakers make airwave time Mac? It should. Paxson couldn't get him last year and now a bag of peanuts gets Gasol. Paxson has to be fuming. |

Pau Gasol didn't come from a winning college program so he doesn't fit in with the guys that Pax wants. |

Mac tends to pat himself on the back too much for my liking. At least he has the ratings to back up his swagger. He can say that he appeals to the masses -- the numbers point that out. On the other hand, North's numbers show that his program is tanking. I believe he has the worst numbers of the main WSCR shows. He's grossly overpaid for the product that he puts on the air. I'm not a big fan of Murph either, but he's developed an allegiant audience. He keeps drawing the numbers. |

And he has one of the most debilitating kind of injuries, a bad achilles, which surely has quite a lot to do with his play this season. Achilles injuries often linger for months when athletes try to play with them. Shutting him down for the year might be the best option. |

Before that occurred (granted, a chronic injury to be sure), he wasn't the game on the line kind of player as Pax thought he was. Luol Deng doesn't drive to the basket often enough. He's a jump shot player on a team full of them with or without the injury. |

Yes, his achilles certainly seems to have become his achilles. |

Not trading Deng was a huge mistake. Not that he isn't a good player, with considerable upside. But the position he plays, is also the position the Bulls are deepest at. If they had made the deal, Thomas would be getting the minutes he really needs to develop. Not taking Brandon Roy was a mistake and Roy was my choice on draft day. Not because I didn't believe in Thomas' long term potential, but because I felt Roy was ready to contribute immediately. Whereas drafting Aldridge and then trading him for Thomas, meant having to wait a few years for a young player to develop, while guys like Wallace are getting too old to help win anything. Pau Gasol is a fine offensive player and would have helped the Bulls. This is yet another year under Pax where the Bulls will have nobody on the all star team. That says volumes about the general managers drafting and trading record. I don't blame Mac and the boys for talking so seldom about Basketball. The fact is, by the time football season is over (super bowl-lets face it, the pro bowl is an afterthought) Baseball is ready to start spring training. If the Bulls or Hawks are not having much success, there really isn't much interest. I think Mac had planned to talk more buckets this year, because like many of us, he "thought" they would be a winning team-worthy of coverage. But discussing the current group is a waste of time. It's a bunch of under-achievers, who don't seem to care much. They did discuss the Gasol trade and the fact that the Bulls didn't get Gasol and how Pax has been reluctant to pull the trigger on a deal. But there weren't many calls on the subject, which I think reflects the fact that listeners are not real interested in the team at this point. What date do pitchers and catchers report???? |

Really, thanks for not Giangrecoing yourself and whining incessantly about doing your job you get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to do. The NBA playoffs are intriguing at times, but look at the attendance at some of these venues right now - they're more empty than a Program Director's cranium. |

I think the line is: “Phone calls and footlockers” But like the good Colonel, bluster and b.s. can only hold up for so long. You challenge FavreFan’s opinion by questioning his “research” and yet you offer a line of reasoning that is as specious as it is vacuous. While there may be 7 million potential listeners who won’t attend a Bulls game, you forget that your own medium exists in the shadows of a giant, television. Your ability to “reflect interest” is derived primarily (if not exclusively) from watching events on television, just as is the case with better than 97% of your actual listening audience. Like those who wish to appear more inclusive by practicing being more exclusionary, your approach of building a bigger listening audience by narrowing your scope of discussion is certainly the kind of thing you seem to be hanging your hat on. But hey, it really is about merely moving the meters (as you say)and you’ll play to your strengths: recycled boomer pop culture. So yeah. . . . back to the Commissioner and whether Congress should meddle in the internal workings of the NFL (they shouldn’t) and on Monday you can selectively tell us about the bets on which you lost. |

Thats what they'll talk about Monday, and that will bring more listeners than NBA talk. So you've just proved Mac's point. |

Mac is still the least known sports talker, outside his narrow band. The vast majority of listeners in any demographic listen to something other than MJH. Yes Mac, you lead in your demographic, but you do NOT have the majority of those listeners by any means. And you are a total unknown to the other demographics, just like B&B. North has promoted himself so that many people know who he is, whether they think he's blithering idiot or not. You are just the leader of a small band.
BTW Frank, the demo is 25-54- that means age group, not the IQ group you fit into. |
