Nothing like sticking your neck out to get an old friend hired at the station but when the papers are teeing up your buddy it relects on you. When Larry Lujack is calling you out you know you've made it.

Chet takes a beating by fans.

What Chet said wasn't the smartest thing to say but when does a guy get a break for saying stupid stuff these days? We all grew up with Dahl, Howard Stern , Mancow, Johnny B. and North and Mac and Terry in the early days of sports radio and the stuff that came thru my speakers was as raw and cutting edge as ever.

Radio has become so dummy-downed it's lost it's luster for the entertainment value it once was. The word ASS has become taboo on the airwaves these days and it will be only time before Mac takes his show to XM.

I heard North this morning say someone was acting "like a little gay boy."
Not sure who he was talking about though.
Doesn't matter.

then I heard Dahl doing gay Lincoln jokes.

I guess you can make fun out of the fags all you want but the Jews run the radio stations so they are NOT on the poke fun at list.

Oh this is rich. Is Les Silverman Marc's dad? "a true talent like Bruce Wolf?" Please...

What Chet said was stupid, but there's been worse things said and done without reprimand

You forget the Dana Jacobson angle...You suspend her, you need to suspend him.

I think Chet did get a break..he was not fired (as he should have been simply because he sucks). He is an alleged professional broadcaster, he knows better regardless of whether he was speaking "off the cuff" or not.

I grew up with Dahl or Johnny B. and I do not recall either of them making an anti-Semitic comment in a manner like Chet apparently did. (I never heard them make directly racist remarks either.) Did they do bits that were edgy concerning race and religion? Sure. As David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls said, there is a fine line between stupid and clever.

Do you honestly think that what Chet said was "raw and cutting edgy"?

On the "racist scale" I'd give this a 1 out of 10.

Since when is having money a bad thing?

How do you spell Irish? W.H.I.S.K.E.Y.
It's harmless...and people that overreact to this garbage are simply idiots.

Why can TV keep getting more trashy and radio is for boy scouts?

Given that it was not a "racist" comment, but a religious one, I do not see how you can even give it a 1.

I'd love to have any company that employs you as a manager as a client. I would be cleaning up your mishandling of such workplace issues and the resulting employment discrimination claims on a daily basis. Add in the anti-harassment training and I could make enough to pay for my kids' college.

I'd have to agree with that statement (at least the latter part of it). Chet does not belong on the radio anymore.

Fine...I give this a 1 on the "RELIGIOUS scale"

What the hell are you talking about?

The "harmless...and people that overreact to this garbage are simply idiots" line. Businesses whose managers take that attitude in the workplace concerning this stuff usually end up needing lawyers to clean up the resulting mess.

Without seeing the CBA, I give AM1000 management an 8, on a scale of 1 to 10, on their handling of the matter as it sounds like Finji had his wings clipped too for his part in this. I give only an 8 because Chet could have been axed given his alleged prior workplace misconduct. I am guessing this is Strike 2 and if there is one more, HE GAWN.

I agree with Doug. There are much worse things said on radio and TV that go unpunished. Its not like he was quoting Hitler or something. It was a stupid thing to say, but a harmless joke nonetheless. Nowhere near what Mel Gibson said.

Peter...
There is a difference between saying that kind of stuff and reacting to it.
How could you assume that I would say something like that to a Client?

Harry has made these kinds of jokes before, but it is o.k. for him to do it because he just happens to follow Judaism?

Is bookie preist less offensive? Is calling a woman a bitch more offensive?

Can we agree on the stupidity of all of it?

There's not a double standard...it's a quad-standard.

If Chet is on strike two, what is Mac on?

What did Finji do?

First off, never said what Chet said was cutting edge, I think my words were "It was not the smartest thing to say"..Reading is a skill Pete.

Secondly , Dahl had a character called "Anthony" (which I loved) and it was a blatant type of satire on Italian men in general. He used the word Wap and diego quite often and the character was quite funny but a lot of Italian guys had a problem with it. Gary used Cliff, who was a take off on a gay Character quite often used on the Steve and Garry show as well.

I listened to Dahl from his days at WDAI circa 1983 and the Loop and I can tell you he had many run in's with all races and creeds over his tenure in Chicago radio. None of these guys are angles so let's not fool ourselves here , Ok .

1. Frank: There may be worse things said elsewhere, but where they on a sports show in the morning? If Chet was quoting Hitler or Mel Gibson he probably would be gone instead of suspended. Coming on the heels of the Jacobson issue, this should not be surprising to anyone.

2. Doug: I never said you would say something like this to a client. But if management took the approach you, and others, had to his comment and allowed it to slide, it could lead to legal problems for the station from Chet's co-workers. It does not matter if Chet was joking or not. While employers are not required to maintain a workplace that is free from all ignorant comments, employers cannot legally ignore it when the same guy keeps doing stupid stuff like this. The fact is this is Chet's 2d workplace incident since he has been back. Maybe management took that into account in connection with its decision to discipline him?

As for Harry, the context does matter. Harry is an alleged comedian and is Jewish (despite his love of the sausage patty). I have never heard North's Bookie Priest bit, so I cannot really say whether it is offensive or worse than Mac calling someone a bitch. But then again, I am guessing North is playing a character and does not call actual people "bitch."

I think it was a very stupid comment on Chet's part. He knows better than to say stuff like that. As ESPN disciplined him quickly, the Anti-Defamation League is not calling for Chet's termination. As for Mac, I would love to read the disciplinary memos in his personnel file. Maybe we can ask Mac to post them in a future Ask Mac thread. Probably better reading than board members' W-2s.

From what I understand, Finji is the one who asked Chet the stupid question in the first place. My bet is he got his wrist slapped for it.

3. Slap Shot ED: While you never said Chet was cutting edge, you are the one who brought up Dahl, et al. It certainly seemed like you were trying to imply that Chet's comments were somehow on par with Dahl, Johnny B. etc. That is why I asked the question.

I grew up listening to Dahl too and Anthony and Cliff were satirical characters in the 1980s versus Chet telling a stupid joke in 2008. Times have simply changed and you cannot get away with this stuff anymore. You guys can bitch and moan about political correctness all you want, but it ain't going to change things.

I get your management point.

So it would have been o.k. if Chet was Jewish but it's not o.k that Ben is.
It's just dumb overall.

It's the unwritten rule of broadcasting, you can make fun of any ethnic, racial, or sexual group except for The One. And even then, you have to be a part of that group to make jokes. Marlon Brando once tried to point this out before being relegated to obscurity, the last place an entertainer/public figure wishes to be banished.

I think the big picture in radio today is that most stations are owned by CBS, Disney/ABC , NBC and many other huge entities that have higher standards for employee conduct and actually have an employee handbook. Times have changed, and the privately owned stations have gone bye- bye and with the internet and the media savvy society we have become, it sets up more people to be responsible for their actions.

Someone mentioned that T.V. has become more trashy and radio has become policed and I can't understand that either but I remember the Bush regime set out to clean up radio for some reason but I think with cable and other outlets it's a fall on deaf ears when it comes to T.V. . IF ANYTHING THEY SHOULD LOOK INTO CLEANING UP THE INTERNET..More crime is committed on the internet then on the streets of NY on a daily basis.
