I'll bet he has new respect for what Mac and Jurko do now.

...tolerating Harry and staying awake during his jokes. ;)

He gets an 'F' for email discipline too.

I turned it on to start my ride home...and turned it off about 5 minutes later. Show was pretty bad today.

I give Teddy a lot of credit for today. I called him at 9am and asked him to fill in on an afternoon drive show later that same day. He had never done it before and didn't really know what to expect.

He came in prepared, with a lot of interesting stories and was able to laugh at himself and us. He never talked over JD or Harry and he had a lot of energy. It isn't easy to talk for four hours...just ask Jurko.

Teddy gets a thumbs up for today.

Once he learns how to talk into the mic, he wont be too bad :)

Show was okay. The only story that I heard was the don baylor one. Eh.

Why did you have to call him at 9am? Who was suppose to host today?

I guess a REAL sports radio professional, ie Les Grobstein, Tommy Williams or The OG wasn't available.

Funny stuff - Teddy's MJH Journal:

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com ... 510.column

10:05 a.m.: I seek the advice of Tribune columnist/former radio wise guy Steve Rosenbloom. "I can teach you how to fail," he says.

Rosenbloom's WMVP show with Sean Salisbury lasted less than a year. His advice: Ask short questions. Don't curse, because you never know when the mic is on. Don't pretend to be an expert on everything.

"You will be drained by the second hour if you're doing it right," he says.

1:12 p.m.: Zederman sees me doing research on Jurkovic's computer.

"If you're going to eat," he says, "I'd wash your hands after using Jurk's mouse."

Interesting column. I want to know about Teddy's weekend in Vegas. I would guess it is not a coincidence he went during March Madness. What tourney games did he bet on? How will his winning or losing affect his future objectivity in covering college sports? Will he continue to be a member of the I love Bo club because he now understands first hand that Bo knows spreads? Inquiring minds want to know.

He wants teddy taken off the media coulmn. He went on this whole schmeel about how he has given Teddy the time of day and he left things out of his interviews that he told him to put in there and yadda, yadda, yadda. North sounded sorta petty and shallow for thoe 5 minutes of crying.

Dat just aint rights, yous knows wat I meen Jen? Ooooooooh Poor Pappy.

For once North actually has a point. Whoever heard of a media critic, whose job it is to critique a program, actually being part of the show he is assigned to critique? It's also interesting that the Trib editors allowed it. Another sign of the demise of the grey lady. But it's absolutely brilliant on Zederman's and Craig's part to invite the fox into the henhouse and make pals with him. We all know first hand how difficult it is to be objective about our friends. They make Teddy their bud and, whether Teddy will ever admit it or not, it's now much more difficult for Teddy to honestly criticize his friends. So much for Journalism Ethics as practiced in 2008.

This isn't really much of a new development, though. It has been going on for some time. MJH have had Teddy as an occasional guest on their show, and the tenor of those conversations was very buddy buddy. That's not something you have seen other media critics do with other shows because it puts their objectivity into question. Could you imagine Feder doing the Spike O'Dell show? Or Rosenthal doing the evening news? Of course not. Brilliant move on ESPN's part. Their principal media critic is now their pal. That's very smart business. Keep your friends close...and your critics even closer.

I would compare this to a sports reporter going to lunch with an athlete they cover. It happens all the time. I fail to see the problem...

Author:  Brick [ Wed Mar 26, 2008 4:08 pm ]
Post subject:

How could you expect anyone who considers themselves to be a member of the media to be unbiased while covering the media? He works with media members and I am sure sees some of them all the time.

If you really wanted a truly unbiased perspective on the media you would have to get the input of someone from another part of the country.

When an athlete comes on, I don't expect them to be unbiased when talking about teammates or opponents but they can still give good insights.

Author:  Beardown [ Wed Mar 26, 2008 4:11 pm ]
Post subject:

No Krazy Ivan. Coast is right. So is Pappy even though he's paranoid. That amuses me. Going to dinner with an athlete isn't an equal analogy. It's wrong too just not equal to what Teddy did. (I'm the king at knowing proper analogies. Ask Midget.)

Teddy actually got paid by ESPN 1000. How can he write on something that he is employed by? Even if this is a one time thing. It's a conflict of interest. Maybe Teddy is now angling for a job at ESPN 1000. Who knows? But he's certainly perceived as a biased reporter now.

O.K.

How about Bruce Levine covering the Cubs for WMVP and also getting paid to write in Vine Line?

Is that comparable?

Thats a good comparison and also reason for alot of the Levine criticism around here.

Ding Ding Ding. We now go to media sell outs for a thousand.

In the end I'm sure Teddy doesn't give a shit. He just has to come up with a couple of fluff pieces and other bull shit while doing the media beat. He's just trying to do something for the Trib until college football starts up again.

If Teddy were any other reporter, like Rosenbloom or Hanley, no problem. Their job is not to critique sports radio. When an athlete goes to lunch with the reporter, the reporter is doing his job. No problem there. Now, if the reporter becomes buddy buddy with the player, goes to the athlete's house and babysits his kids, then that's a different thing entirely. That reporter will likely be much softer on that athlete buddy of his.

Teddy didn't just have lunch with someone he covers; he did their job, became part of their organization and even babysat their kid Harry for a day. He now has a special kind of bond with Mac and Jurko, who have to babysit Harry every day. That's a much closer analogy, eh King?

You guys missed on very important point. Teddy was very clear at the outset that he was invited to be on the show not as Teddy Greenstein Tribune media critic, but as Teddy Greenstein Chicago Tribune NCAA football columnist. He wears two hats for the trib and he was there wearing his college football hat.

Big difference.

Coast, I see your point, but Norths tone and reaction to it sounded more like he was pissed off that he didnt get his name in the paper, he even admitted that he likes to see his name in the paper. Plus, if Teddy was a full time media guy, I would sit on your side of the fence, but since he isnt and Pappy reacted like a child who didnt get what he want for X-Mas, I just think Pappy looks bad in the way he reacted.

I dont know if you heard pappy this morning, but like I said before, it was just his tone, it was a first for me to hear the panic in his voice, almost like he picked up the paper while he was on the air and the more he read it, the more pissed off he got. With that said, the biggest thing I took away from it was the fact that when he is interviewed, that he wants certain things to be in the article, I dont know, because as most can see, I am not a writer, but that seems strange to me.

I didn't hear it. If that was North's point -- that he can't control the story and get his points in every article -- then yes, that's a very different matter from the one I was commenting upon.

Author:  RodeoVann [ Wed Mar 26, 2008 6:33 pm ]
Post subject:

He was all over the road, but that was one of the things he did mention twice. Pappy is Pappy, I understand that, but those type of things are going hurt him career wise if he thinks he has that type of control, because the media will bury him if he starts turing on him, he needs to understand that.

who cares if greenstein was on the show? what possible difference does it make? i dont need that goof to tell me what is good and what is crappy radio in a column in the trib. i have ears to do that for me. he could write that north sucks and mjh are great, or the opposite, and it makes no difference whatsoever. i listen to the shows i want to hear, and flip the dial on the rest.

it isnt like the guy is reporting on a newsworthy topic that commands the utmost in objectivity. he writes about radio programs. wow. call up edward r. morrow.

out of curiousity, do food reviewers ever eat free meals at restaurants? do movie reviewers ever get special insentives from movie studios? maybe, maybe not, i really have no idea, but if i found out richard roeper was at a paramount party knocking back free drinks, or kicking it with steven spielberg just before his next movie came out, i couldnt possibly care less if it affected his opinion or not.

You make a point. It is the toy department. Covering sports media. Still, as a pro, Greenstein should want to have some credibility. Obviously he doesn't. Obviously the Trib doesn't care. It's all about networking for Teddy. Maybe he'll need to apply at ESPN 1000 one day. It's good for him to forge relationships with the bosses and workers there.
