What's up, fellas? Teddy G here. This is my first post. Hopefully you won't ask me to see my ID.

I enjoyed reading your comments – especially the one that had me showing up to Drew Peterson's pool party in a bikini – and thought I might as well respond.

I agreed to do the MJ&H show – after my editors approved it – because: 1) I thought it would be fun; 2) As someone who comments on and sometimes criticizes sports-radio talk-show hosts, I wanted to understand what it's like to do a four-hour show; 3) I wanted to see if I would be up for the challenge. Or if I would suck.

Was it a conflict of interest? Well, the $300 I would have made is going to the McCormick Tribune Foundation, so I don't think guest-hosting is all that different from being a guest on MJ&H. I do that every few weeks during college football season.

And I think the media's ethical line has blurred in the last 5-10 years. Some of my sportswriter colleagues – Trib and Sun-Times – either host shows or are paid contributors for Chicago radio stations. They don't cover sports media like I do, but they could be influenced by how they report a story that's broken by the Score or ESPN 1000.

Tons of writers – Mariotti, Kornheiser, Norm Chad – now work for ESPN and sometimes write about the network.

In my case, I wrote a year ago that MJ&H is my favorite show in town. But I've also dinged them over the dumb suspensions. I strive to be fair to the people I write about – too bad Mike North didn't extend the same courtesy to me – and will continue to do that.

Thanks for caring enough to make all those comments.

Teddy G

Teddy G, I hope this is really you, otherwise I'll look more foolish than usual by chatting with you.
I don't think the perceived conflict of interest has anything to do with the pay at all.
Korny, Mariotti, Chad, these guys are not media critics.
If the media's ethical line has blurred over the last 5-10 years a guy like you should maybe help define the line by saying no when something like this pops up. Be an ethical guidepost.
This was at best, fuzzy journalistic ethics (in my opinion) and although no express rules were broken, I would have expected that you would turn down this offer so that at the very least you wouldn't have to hear the inevitable North rant.
All that being said, welcome to the board.

Don't I recall a similar experience at NU with WNUR while you were Sports Editor of the Daily Northwestern?

Typing the words "sports media critic", "sports talk show", and "objectivity" just kind of make me laugh. Some people take this stuff WAY too seriously. Let's just hope "Score is Doomed" doesn't offer his two cents.

I liked your reference to CSFMB in an article a couple years ago about MJH. Don't be a stranger.

Welcome to the board Teddy. I see nothing wrong at all about you being on the show, in fact, I thought you did a good job for a rookie!!!
Geez, sports talk radio isn't anything serious to begin with, so why all the angst on this board?
I view the column more as a commentary rather than a real "critical" type piece. So welcome to the board and I hope to hear you on the show again.

Did North say something about wanting you to address some issue specific to him in your column? I hope you don't devote any ink to him, thereby giving the cretin the attention he so desperately craves.

And when did Teddy start accepting guest host and guest call in slots that he used to turn down for "ethical" reasons?

Not judging TG one way or another, because I have mixed feelings about his appearance, but a little perspective:

After he had already begun reviewing movies, Roger Ebert wrote the screenplay for a film called "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls." Did this foray into the industry he criticized impair his objectivity? I don't know, but apparently the people who later voted him the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism and all his fans who've made him probably the world's most prominent film critic didn't seem to think so. Sometimes critics dabble in the very field they criticize. It's not unheard of.

In the sports world, there are a lot of potential conflicts of interest we fans see every day--the Tribune owning the Cubs, the Score being the Sox and Hawks' flagship stations, these "multi-media monsters" like Tony Kornheiser, for example, who writes for a paper, appears on ESPN, does Monday Night Football, etc., and hey . . .

While someone is shooting off their mouth about this appalling gesture by Mr. Greenstein, I would also wonder if someone who was wined and dined and put up in a skybox and honored as the very first Chicago Radio Icon and had his and his family's asses kissed by Wirtz and McDonough and the Blackhawks can be objective about that franchise anymore. Not saying he can't--just wondering.

I don;t see how that's the same as what Teddy did at all. What would make it the same is if Ebert wrote the screenplay and then went on to give a review in the paper. That would be a problem.

I actually side with Darkside on this one. I'm not enraged by it, but putting TG as host I believe is going across the line. Obviously we are stuck in an "agree to disagree" state.

One sidenote - I did an IMDB check of Roger Ebert to see what movies he has been in. The one I saw was an indie film he has no record of reviewing. I'm sure he has had cameos in others that were probably not credited. I did find it interesting though - as far as I know - he did not review this film.

What you all need to remember too is, he used the guest co-host spot for a story. What I wonder is if he got paid for it, which he shouldn't have accepted. What he should consider doing is donating whatever ESPN1000 paid him (if they did) and donate it to charity. That would clear any sense of conflict.
