I'm posting it here cuz Mac said he wanted to watch it. What did you think Mac? What are your thoughts on your industry.

It was on HBO. Pappy was featured at the beginning and they kind of painted him as the "low brow stupid talk show host". Pappy didn't realize they were gonna do that I'm sure. It was funny. Mariotti was ripping sports radio. You know he was referring to Pappy's show.

I thought it was interesting. Mad Dog from NY was on the panel. He admitted that sports radio thrives on negative. He said the Mets collapse was better for their show than the Giants Super Bowl.

They also ripped on the internet sports blogs. Some old writer got really pissed at the owner of Deadspin.com.

Al Michaels referred to shows like Around the Horn as "gas bags on parade".

Costas got on his high horse and said he was greatly offended when he was listening to sports radio and they were asking callers "would you do her?" with regards to female media girls.

They got into race issues at the end. Costas said he's gonna do another 90 minute show dedicated to race.

I recommend that Bob Costas not make a habit of reading this message board.

You know what's funny? Pappy is always showcased nationally as the big time sports radio guy in Chicago. He was featured in this thing on HBO. He's been mentioned in other national publications and shows.

He's been made to be the face of Chicago sports radio. Little do they know, nationally, how unsuccessful he's been over the last 10 years.

MJH and B&B are the big players in Chicago. Do you find that curious Mac? Do you wish you would get some national pub? You've been pretty successful for 16 years in Chicago on afternoon drive.

You should have done that HBO show over Pappy. You actually have listeners.

It just offends me that Pappy is put out there as the guy Chicago loves. Makes us all look stupid. When, in fact, nobody likes his show.

Will Bob Costas plug the HBO show on his own radio show?

The deadspin guys have been posting that interview ad nauseam the last day or so. I don't remember them being so outward and open when Will Leitch beclowned himself on NPR talking about how black athletes aren't really black, for reasons he can uniquely discern.

beardown, it just feeds right into the national perception of the "meatball mentality" that chicago sports fans share, along with the super fans thing.

unfortunately there are a lot of people that will fall into that stereotype, but then again, every "sports town" has its stereotype.

Yes-Pappy fits quite neatly into the "Superfans", meatball, image that I assume national media has of Chicago fandom and our radio hosts. He is , or was, the highest paid sports talker too, which may lend some credibility to the idea of him being #1, in some people's eye's . Why they don't look at ratings is a good question. But I think it's more entertaining to some people around the country, to see someone who is this charachature of our sports media people, than to just have "another" intelligent person talk about sports. They want someone different, maybe a bit over the top and outrageous. Someone who has asked Pat Riley if he would shave his head to beat the Bulls in the playoffs is qualified. No, he isn't as GOOD as Mac . But he is perhaps more fitting in that role. If they just want intelligent sports conversation, they could have Jeremy Schaap and Bob Costas have a chat. But how entertaining is that going to be? To some very-but to the masses, it may be a show that doesn't get very good ratings.

I did not see it yet, Beardown, but I plan to very soon. Cubs-Brewers, the Sox-Twins replay and nursing a bad cold -- while battling insomnia -- have been consuming my evenings and "overnights."

As for national publicity -- or lack therof -- it used to bother me a bit, but not any more. Several "advisors" have suggested to me I should be more of a self promoter, a la Pappy. That works for Pappy because he hosts "The Mike North Morning Show." I drive the "Afternoon Saloon." Pete Townshend's song "A Little Is Enough" from the fabulous "Empty Glass" album speaks loudly to how I feel about this.

I am considering my own website (primarily to promote my writing projects, autism treatment fundraising, MJH, etc.) but I am not desirous of building a national rep. Doing national shows in Bristol a little more than seven years ago did nothing for my ego. I prefer local radio.

I like being part of a team and taking a team approach. Building the "Danny Mac brand," as suggested to me, is something that really makes me feel creepy. I know what I've done in this town and I'm the only one who's done it. I'm proud of what my shows and colleagues have accomplished with me. The love I need in business arrives every other Friday. Plus... time is a precious medium of exchange. I would prefer to spend a weeknight watching a movie with my wife or my kids than staying downtown to record a show for national airspace.

I'll save anybody interested in the time.

"A Little Is Enough"

They say that love often passes in a second
And you can never catch it up
So I'm hanging on to you as though eternity beckon
But it's clear that the match is rough
Common sense's tell me not to try'n continue
But I'm after a piece of that diamond in you
So keep an eye open
My spirit ain't broken
Your love is so incredible
Your body so edible
You give me an overdose of love
Just a little is enough

I'm like a connoisseur of champagne cognac
The perfume nearly beats the taste
I eat an oyster and I feel the contact
But more than one would be a waste
Some people want an endless line that's true
But all I have is a little time with you
A smile sets me reeling
A kiss feel like stealing
Your love is like heroin
This addict is mellowing
I can't pretend that I'm tough
Just a little is enough

Just like a sailor heading into the seas
There's a gale blowing in my face
The high winds scare me but I need the breeze
And I can't head for any other place
Life would seem so easy on the other tack
But even a hurricane won't turn me back
You might be an island
On the distant horizon
But the little I see
Looks like heaven to me
I don't care if the ocean gets rough
Just a little is enough

Common sense's tell me not to try'n continue
But I'm after a piece of that diamond in you
So keep an eye open
My spirit ain't broken
Your love is so incredible
Your body so edible
You give me an overdose of love
A little is enough

Here is Costas making a point about sports fans posting on message boards. How it's a new low for sports media. You're right Irish Boy. Costas wouldn't like us.

This is Costas reading what people posted on deadspin.com after Salisbury got fired from ESPN. It's funny hearing Costas read these.

Looks like tomorrow's movie line of the week is done:

I believe it is on demand starting Monday. I caught the last 40 minutes or so at 4am while trying to unclog a toilet (how appropriate...right). Something about it made me feel uncomfortable and uneasy, but I'm not quite sure what it was. I think I need to give it another viewing without interruption.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Finji and Danny Z spend most of the 2-6PM time slot chiding the fellas and giving them shit.

It really is pretty accurate. It was on this morning.
North is a clown. Mariotti was right about the target audience, it isn't 25 to 54, it really is 18-35. Listen to the ads, listen to the discussions, listen to some of the loud meatballs on radio, it does appeal to the lowest common denominator for the most part. It could be and should be far more civil and intelligent, but I guess that doesn't sell to the under 35 crowd.

Is that because they are sifting through all of the emails you have sent in?

North was talking about the show, and made a comment about how 'desperate' Dan Patrick seemed for attention - and that leaving ESPN was a HUGE mistake for him, because nobody really cares about him anymore.

True or false about how Patrick seemed, as I don't have HBO.

I don't see it in the HBO On Demand. Is it late or did they take it off already?

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know why they did a "Town Hall Format" when all Bob Costas did was shoosh the audience when they had a response? I also think that each of the five topics should have been an hour long show by themselves. It seemed like they rushed through some important issues.

I tend to agree about that point. I think he now is realizing how irrelevant he has become. He maybe finding out that it was ESPN not him that people listened to. North, hopefully, will find that out also.

Finally got a chance to see it. Random thoughts:

1. An hour of my life that I will never get back.
2. Bissinger may get a coronary if he reads this board.
3. Better panel idea for Costas, from left to right, Mac, Strahan, Pappy. He might also want to bring in the bouncer guy from the Jerry Springer show.
4. Pappy would have done something super unpredictable and attention grabbing on live HBO show. It's probably not too unsafe to speculate that Pappy and the station are still way apart on contract terms. If they were close, considering that HBO and the Score are sister establishments, they would have done everything to cross promote their big money guy.
