Post subject: | Lynyrd Skynyrd |
Slapshot Ed mentioned Skynyrd in the same sentence as 38 Special and a few other insignificant acts from yesteryear. Whoa that thing, Slapnuts. I'll have an LS three-pack for you when I see you on the golf course Friday morning. While I hold only Lynyrd Skynyrd responsible for spawning and cultivating an image of a red neck band from Jerkwater U.S.A. (thank you Col. Troutman), it was a gifted band. Skynyrd's guitarists complemented each other well. Skynyrd employed a tight horn section. They were one of the rare acts that integrated a piano successfully in foot-stomping music. The skinsman, the athletic Artimus Pyle, could hit 'em. Ronnie Van Zant was the perfect frontman for this terrificly talented but Confederate flag stained travellers. Skynyrd's library of solid albums goes five deep. Not many bands can boast that. They have so many soulful "deep cuts," such as "Don't Ask Me No Questions," "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller," "The Hobo Song," etc. I saw Jacksonville's finest musical offering at Soldier Field in June of '77 when they were on the bill with Ted Nugent at one of those wacky Super Bowl of Rock shows. Little did anybody know it would be their last Chicago stop. I'm glad I was there. I love Lynyrd Skynyrd's music. |

Apart from the usual chestnuts "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird", I've got a few I really like. "Gimme Three Steps", "Workin' For MCA", and "Call Me The Breeze" to name a few. We can just pretend they didn't record "That Smell". |

This is scary. Mac's producer and I concur on a couple old man rock and roll acts. Back to Trivium before I start feeling old. |

I generally agree with Mac, but the number of deep cuts is limited. Some of those non-greatest hit songs are just painful. |

One of my high school nicknames was "The Breeze" so "They Call Me The Breeze" was an anthem of mine. Miska, aren't you supposed to be listening to Mike Tirico? "That Smell" was bad. "Street Survivors," their last album, was a bust. And don't defend it with "What's Your Name?" |

I honestly can't think of a good thing to say about "What's Your Name" I tried. I do like "Tuesday's Gone", which was Frank Coztansa's offering. |

Things Goin On Have you ever lived down in the ghetto? Have you ever felt the cold wind blow? If you don't know what I mean, Won't you stand up and scream? 'Cause there's things goin' on that you don't know. Too many lives they've spent across the ocean. Too much money been spent upon the moon. Well, until they make it right I hope they never sleep at night They better make some changes And do it soon. They're goin ruin the air we breathe Lord have mercy. They're gonna ruin us all, by and by. I'm telling you all beware I don't think they really care I think they just sit up there And just get high. |

Now for the million dollar question: What do Judas Priest and Lynyrd Skynyrd have in common? |

Mac, redneckmommy and I saw them live twice now. The concert is was not too bad, they actually seem like they still care about singing the same crap from 30 years ago. Its a little awkward though when they are singing freebird and van zandt is pointing up to the screen for all the dead skynard band members. Oh, and Metallica couldnt hold one of Van Zandt's nuts. They can take their Saint Anger and shove it up their "we don't sell out" asses. |

Is there any truth that Spinal Tap is actually modeled after Maiden? When Bruce goes into his song description, I always think about midgets dancing around stonehedge. |

spinal tap was modeled after a bunch of different bands; they've even said that they were going for the whole "image" rather than just parodying one band. when it's all said and done, i think some of the most underrated songwriters in this country will be christopher guest and michael mckean. from "spinal tap" to "a mighty wind", that's a hell of a lot of versatility. |
