Sundevil-you really need to find a hobby. What a lame post! Cub's lose? Yeah, so what? Should someone else post "Cub's win!!!" every time they win? I think not, as thats just a statement of fact. I thought the purpose of the message board was to offer up opinions and observations that might elude the common sports fan. But apparently, you are one of those people who try to get their kicks out of aggitating others. Thats sad and pathetic-plus....

That's a bit of a reach Frank...there's a difference between celebrating the defeat of someone else's team and celebrating the (hopeful) success of your own.

I know, I'm just pointing out that celebrating one team's defeat agitates one side of town, preparing for the World Series before Memorial Day agitates the other side.

If you care what the other side of town does, sure.

The thing is, unless the Cub's are playing against the White Sox, I hope they win. I attend games on both sides of town, as well as in Milwaukee-even if the Brewers are not playing the Cub's. I just love baseball. But I get no joy from seeing the Sox lose (unless it's to the Cub's) and hope they win the A.L. Central. Best case scenario is the two teams meet in the world series. That much I do share with the tiny one.Far fetched, perhaps. But possible. I just cannot imagine why some Sox fans are more preoccupied with the Cub's than their own team. I celebrate the Cub's early success and hope for much more. I don't see any hypocracy there.I see the flaws they have and remark about them. I don't look at the Cub's with rose colored glasses and fail to see flaws. But all in all, it's a darn good team, that should be in the post season again.

Frank, as a fellow Sox fan, I unfortunately have to agree with KD. Whenever I talk to my friends that are Cubs fans., whenever they talk about a WS berth, I disagree, but I never would condemn them for that. I'm of the opinion that Sox fans should be Sox fans, Cubs fans should be Cubs fans, and fans that enjoy the other side's failures more than their own sides's successes, are lame, and need to focus their angst somewhere else. The D-backs are the only team in the NL I can say Im pretty sure are better than the Cubs. I dont think a WS title is out of the question, although I doubt they are gonna win it this year.

That was very well-stated Farvio. Exactly my thoughts as well. I'm a Sox fan but I've never hated the Cubs and I've never gotten off on the Cubs' failures. To do so would be lame as fuck. Unless the teams are meeting head-to-head I'm not really following the Cubs anyway.

You know what would be really crazy, if the Cubs win the central and all the other playoff spots are won by teams that have ruined their chances of making the World Series (Mets, Braves or Marlins win East/Wildcard, Padres or Giants win West/Wildcard). Every story will be about history repeating itself yet again, and my head will explode. :aaargh:

I knew I was forgetting somebody. Of course they also, at press time, seem to have the best chance of winning the west, at least from those three.

I think Frank and Steve should start their own board for Cubs and Sox fans to argue their daily drivel. This is by far the worst aspect of Chicago sports fans...Cubs fans vs. Sox fans arguing about whose team sucks more. Frank is often the one to call things tiresome. So it's more than a little ironic that Frank seems to be one who engages in this tiresome act so much. Guess what Frank. The "your dick(team) is smaller than my dick (team)" argument was tiresome before you were even born.

I think it was Badger Vince who nailed their behavior accurately. Red headed step children indeed. Frank, Steve, sundevil, Grid, Riles and all their mults apparently need dye jobs. That would be a fun activity. All Cubs and Sox fans who act this way should all die their hair red to reflect their self-victimization as red headed step children.

SunPussy-It is gonna be a wonderful summer. Not only at Wrigley, but on the road as well (Northsiders travel well). If we were all hostile and frustrated as you seem to imply, we wouldn't keep filling up ballparks on the road, as well as home. But the big blue Party Train keeps chuggin along. With trips to Cincinnatti, StLouis as well as locally at Miller Park and Wrigley, I am gonna be having a blast. While SunPussy just burns in frustration, as : THE CUBS END THE WAIT IN 2008!!!!!

Steve, I am the bizarro you...or you're the bizarro me..whatever the case. I share your same feelings regarding the two Chicago baseball clubs. Why do people invest so much time hating a team in their own city? I just don't get it.

Jeff and Steve, did you read C2C's take on this? that no one commented on. See that for your question. It doesn't answer it but it puts it in a frame which might make sense.

I think the white sox - cubs rivalry is from upbringing, if your from cental IL like me you don't care, you hate the Cardinals, you root for the sox. I don't know the white sox equivalent of this geographically but I am sure it exists. However, if you live your young years in local Cubs/Sox hot spots you become the Franks of the world, bitterness towards the other. I don't get it because I wasn't raised here. I remember my dad, who trained me to be a die hard cubs fan, rooting like crazy for the sox in 83, I jumped on of course! But again this was in Bloomington-Normal.

I guess adult behavior in many ways goes back to your upbringing, MC. If you learn as a kid to despise a certain group of people, in this case a baseball team, it's hard for some people to grow out of that childish behavior as adults. It does seem like mostly a Chicago thing though.

There probably are fans in NY who act like this, but most Mets fans and Yankees fans don't seem to have nearly the same antipathy toward the other team as we have here. The California fans are very different. Most Dodgers fans could care less about the Angels and vice-versa. Giants and As fans have a little bit of a rivalry (they did play each other in a world series) but most don't root for the other team to fail.

Author:  Spaulding [ Sat May 24, 2008 3:19 pm ]

Red Sox fans dislike the Yankees in a similar way. It's a rivalry.

California is full fruits and nuts. :P They have 5 baseball teams but the Giants/Dodgers have a dislike for each other. Not sure if it is to the extent of Cubs/Sox.

I've been brought up to dislike the Cub. Doesn't make it right or wrong, and I have been really trying to not root against the Cubs (ESPECIALLY since 10/05.), but thats me. So whatever. I enjoy baseball, watching, debating, whatever, but I will never root for the Cubs, and I do not expect any of my Cub fan friends to root for my White Sox.
