I just heard caller Katie weigh in on the tip debate the boys are having, and after she said that some bartenders only make $4 an hour Mac said "Maybe you should have stayed in school." She then said she has two degrees, one in English and one in biology, but the job market has been tough since 9/11.

What?

I find it hard to believe that someone with either, let alone both of those degrees has not been able to get a job in a related field for the last seven years because the job market is tough.

Believe it. The job market is tough and it's not a very good time to be unemployed. I have a friend who graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 2004 and still hasn't found a job in his field of study. And it's not like he hasn't been searching. The fact is, unless you know someone on the inside of a company willing to refer you, it's very difficult to find a job right now.

In what field are you looking for a job?

Not that I know that many people, but if I know someone in the field maybe I could help get your resume in front of somebody.

you can find a job, it's just that 4 bucks an hour plus tips might pay more.

....it's been tough since 9/11.

WTF is right.

That was almost 7 fuckin' years ago.

Now I could understand if her vocation was getting on board planes and flying them into buildings - it would be tough to get a job doing that.

If you haven't gotten a job in your field in 7 years, then it's time to find a new field. You either entered a field where job prospects are few and far between or it's dried up due to an evolving business climate. Either way, you have no excuse for having trouble in 7 years. Go out and get your masters in a completely different field in 2 years. Get a teaching certification. Go to law school. If you were a biology major, go to medical school if you had the grades.

The weak economy excuse is valid at most for a couple years. It was once a tough job market for telegraph operators but it had nothing to do with a weak economy. It was because it was a terrible industry to be in. Telegraph operators had to find something else to do.

Some people may be educated, but are clueless how to build a strategy and a campaign to find a job. They don't know how or where to network or don't understand the value of doing so. Many resumes from college grads are poorly written and constructed. Many don't know how to prepare for interviews and don't study or research the company to which they are applying. Others rely on the want ads and Career Builder type sites for leads. Put all those inept skills and low-payoff strategies together and it's no surprise that so many people can't find a job. They don't know how to do it.
