Doug, anyone else here got any good ones today? I got a thumb for Mike and Mike, hopefully they'll run it.

Even though he made me laugh quite a bit, thumbs down to Jurco from about 4:15 on yesterday. Man was he out of it.

Post subject:  Re: Critics at XL

I have one, but it's not about Chicago sports or baseball so they probably won't use it. And I can't do the entire thumb justice by keeping it to the two sentence limit they seem to have for the on air thumbs. So I'll just put it here for you guys to muse....

THUMBS DOWN to M,J. the Boyquarium and the hockey horn.

On Monday, MJH took a call from a listener who talked about the great Wimbledon final on Sunday. About five seconds after the caller spoke, Mac said "and that's all you'll hear from us about tennnis". If they don't care to talk about tennis, then why did they take the call in the first place? The caller perhaps would have welcomed being told off the air they didn't want to talk about tennis than to be given such short shrift on the air.

Later, they read an email from a listener who talked about the tennis. And then the boyquarium immediately dissed the emailer by blasting the hockey horn immediately after the email was read. So the kids behind the glass don't like tennis either. Fine. But lose the hockey horn. In this case, blasting the horn served only one purpose -- to insult the emailer and his interest in tennis. Again, isn't it better not to read the email at all than to diss the emailer with such short shrift?

Mac said he wouldn't talk about tennis because the ratings for tennis were very low. Jurko said "NOBODY" watched tennis. Not quite right there guys. The early Nielsens report that more people watched the Wimbledon final than any other tennis match in years. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... 94be9e8106

I don't know what the Chicago ratings were yet, but if Chicago reflected the national share of 4.6% of all televisions tuned to the tennis match on Sunday, that would equate to 4.6% of the estimated 1.061 million households in Chicago...or an estimated 48,600 households in Chicago on Sunday tuned to the match. The actual number of viewers is higher, of course, as more than one person views in many households. Whatever the number of tennis viewers on Sunday, it is higher than the estimated 30 thousand listeners who listened to the MJH show on Monday when they said "nobody" cared about the sport.

I don't care whether MJH talk about tennis or not. I don't listen to the show for their discussion of tennis, basketball, racing or other sports they don't know much about. If they don't want to talk about those sports, fine. Just don't take calls or read emails about them then. And don't use absolute absurdities such as "nobody cares", or generalities like "low ratings" when the numbers -- in this case -- say otherwise. Thumbs Down.

That was an outstanding post, Coast. Well written.

Well done Coast. As a very avid NBA fan, I often feel the same way when people say "noone cares" about the NBA. Its entirely untrue, its just the person saying that who doesn't care. If you dont share the interest in that particular sport, thats fine dont try to be something you're not, but there's no need to insult people who do care alot about those sports.

Coast, you took the words out of my mouth...and made them coherent, read worthy, and far more intelligent. I had a similar rant yesterday about the same thing you just talked about in my shout out to Rafa.

Great post Coast.
I'm not a Tennis fan but I watched a lot of it as I was enthralled by a great sporting performance. With age comes cynicism. I remember as a kid I loved following guys who had to overcome personal struggles or other great competitors to get to the top. I'm no big fan of running, boxing, snooker, or darts but many of these events held me captivated based on the performance by the individual.

Post subject:  Re: Critics at XL

I felt exactly the same way that Coast and Zach did, so much so that I flipped over to B&B after I heard the hockey airhorn. Much to my surprise, TB Diddler was talking about Wimbledon and how he thought it was one of the greatest sporting events that he'd ever seen. I didn't stay there for long; just enough to diffuse my frustration.

Don't worry Mac, I'm not leaving and not gonna quit listening. I just think for once you've underestimated your audience. :(

you guys watch tennis often?

i did the smart thing...waited for "instant classic" replay and watched the last 10 minutes.
and I would have completely ignored it (as usual) if it wasn't for every talking sports head telling me how great it was.

meh...it was o.k..
it's tennis.

I would like to give a big thumbs down to the think tanks at FOX Sports & NBC Sports for their respective hirings of Michael Strahan & Dan Patrick to its NFL pregame shows, even though we won't see them at work until September. You've already got a crowded Los Angeles studio on "FOX NFL Sunday" with Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Jay Glazer, Frank Caliendo & Jillian Barberie-Reynolds, and I'm not so sure the outspoken former N.Y. Giant can get a word in edgewise with the guys, not to mention look at Jillian's outfits during the weather segment. As for NBC, I realize Dan & Keith Olbermann's chemistry date back to ESPN "SportsCenter" over a decade ago, but how is D.P. going to fit in with Bob Costas, Cris Collinsworth, Jerome Bettis & NFL Insider Peter King from Sports Illustrated on the New York set of "Football Night in America"? I don't think either one will work...

i've been following tennis since '86, and i not only watch the grand slams, i watch the ATP tourneys too.

You can't just watch 10 minutes of that Wimbledon and say you've seen it, nor just the highlights. The drama was in the entire match. I don't know how the two of them had the energy at the end of it to keep making the great shots they did.

It was the greatest single match I have ever seen in my life as far as the greatness of the sport being played, two people playing at the top of their game. It was the Thrilla in Manilla of tennis grand slams.

I give a thumbs down to anyone who wants to give thumbs down to MJH for dismissing the tennis talk. Thats fine if you like it, but the majority of the Saloonites out there probably don't, and those that do don't tune to AM1000 for tennis chatter.

All of the football pregame and postgame shows have multiple personalities because no two or three personalities are engaging enough to carry a program by themselves.

Nothing was lost on me. When they say "nobody cares" is all relative. Taking into account thier target audience, saying that "nobody cares" probably is not all that inaccurate.

realtively speaking, nobody cares about tennis.

And Zederman puts the calls thru, not MJH.

Post subject:  Re: Critics at XL

it's not so much that they wouldn't talk about it, i get that; it's that mac has a tendency to also put down anyone who seems to want to defend something he doesn't follow or care about--he does the same thing with soccer.

you don't want to talk about it? don't talk about it, but don't act like just because you and your target audience doesn't care about it that "nobody cares about it" or that it wasn't a great event because you didn't see it or cared to.

to me, he's just missing out on so much more by being so narrow minded.

I'm batting about the same average...with email it seems the earlier the better (around the start of the show) so Zederman and the boyquarium have a chance to actually process it. Hopefully it gets picked up on the 2nd lap.

Frank, I don't think anyone here wants tennis talk to be a regular thing here or anything. I just think their complete dismissal of even mentioning one of the greatest matches ever (it was a huge story) was too stubborn on their part. I don't have a problem with much that they do, but the airhorn drives me up the wall. I hated it when they cut off hockey talk and I hate it now. Cutting people off in mid-sentence is.. PWaaaaawwwwww. :P

I still love their show, but I'm not gonna defend them blindly.

i didn't say i "saw it"....all i wanted to view was championship point and the celebration thereafter.

the greatest wrestling match, billiards game, poker tournament, soccer game, tennis match, hockey game, horserace, etc...

it's all the same to me.
read: not football.

narrowminded? fine. guilty.
next question.
