Listening to Bruuuuuuce Sat afternoon:

Some meatball called in saying how he hopes the Cubs don't make it to the World Series because if they happened to lose to the Sox, he just couldn't take a winter dealing with Sox fans after that.

Bruce replied how if the Sox make the playoffs, it would be a 25% chance for a Cubs/Sox World Series being 2 of 8 teams.

It seems borderline to fit the parameters of the segment, but how on Earth can anyone believe the probability would work like this?

Thumbs down to Jurko yesterday about 5:10

The fellas were talking about Da Coatch and his silly pronunciation of the word "salsa" and Jurk's reponse was: "Listen, guys, Da Coach has been around for a while now, he needs to learn how to talk."

Really, Professor Jurko? I wasn't aware you were a master of the English language, having never botched up a word or a phrase on air.

So after that, not more than 2 minutes later, when the talk shifted back to the Bears' offense, there is another entry into the Jurktionary; "Fellas, I don't need to see any 'trickeration' from the Bears offense!"

Jurko, if you're gonna bash Da Coach for the one or 2 things he says wrong because of his local accent, you've gotta be able to speak clearly yourself and not make up words. Thumbs down, Good Kid.

You should have stuck with calling him out for using "talk" instead of "speak" Frank.

Jurko was goofing around using "trickeration".

Post subject:  Re: Critics-ish

I understand that, but the fact remains Jurko is not the most eloquent "talker" around.

I have a strong suspicion that Jurko is "in character" as soon as the mics are on.

goddamit, quit trying to bring me down! I know he plays the part, I just thought it was funny that he bashes Coatch Ditka, then 90 seconds later makes up a word.

Thumbs up for preempting the T&P show with Carm and Bruce. I'm a big fan of just about any local preemption of the disastrous mother-ship midday interlude.

Thumbs down to FOX Sports & their coverage of Major League Baseball Saturday afternoon. It was bad enough that Josh Lewin, who sucked when he worked with the late Harry Caray on Cubs' broadcasts in the late '90s, was here with Tim McCarver & FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal for Saturday's clinching win over the hated Cardinals. What pissed me off was that FOX's backup game was actually the Twins/Rays' game in St. Petersburg, when Jeanne Zelasko and the FOX/MLB crew all but ignored showing highlights from what was a more important game than Brewers/Reds in Cincinnati. To make matters worse, FOX took viewers to the (Not So) Great American Ballpark for bonus coverage of a game that meant very little.

Can someone search this post for a cogent thought? I'm too lazy.

I'm a White Sox fan, and I had more than a casual interest in the Twins/Rays' game Saturday afternoon. FOX Sports thumbed their nose in favor of the Brewers/Reds' game, going as far as providing bonus coverage after the Cubs clinched their division...My thumbs down goes to Jeanne & the folks at FOX in Hollywood for not servicing Sox fans with highlights of a more important ballgame involving one of MLB's great stories in the Rays & a team the Sox are trying to hold off in their division! :x

So you wanted Jeanne to give you a blowjob? I don't think that's in her job description.

All jokes aside, it's not Jeanne Zelasko's decision on which game gets bonus coverage.

Kid, that wasn't called for! Jeanne & her FOX Sports/MLB crew deserve the thumbs down for ignoring a MORE IMPORTANT BALLGAME in Twins/Rays than Brewers/Reds! It's one thing to feature the Cubs/Cardinals & seeing the Cubs clinch their division, but it's another when the network that's spending billions of Rupert Murdoch's $$$$ thumbs their noses at a MORE IMPORTANT BALLGAME! If you think it's bad now, just wait until TBS gets in the game next week! Chip Caray sucks!

I'm just being a STU-GOTZ and engaging SHARK in a fun game of ball-busting. Shark doesn't interpret message board humor very well though. It's still fun nonetheless.

They're spending Rupert Murdoch's money. You're acting like they're spending your money. Relax and just enjoy the sight of Jeanne's boobies.

First of all, it would be a helluva lot longer than ONE WINTER for either fan base to get crap if the crosstown team defeats them in the World Series.

Secondly, without getting in a 'math' class - if all teams were 'equal' - which they're not, then the Sox would have a 25% to get in, as would the Cubs. However, you'd have to crack that number down even more that BOTH teams make it.

But throw that out the window, as the Cubs are favored to win the NL, they don't have a 25% chance to get to the World Series.

I'm sure odds makers have a line on this now that both teams are in the playoffs. I did a quick search and couldn't find it. ....nor do I really care that much.

The odds are actually 1 in 16 that the Cubs wind up playing the Sox. 4 American league teams, with a possiblilty of playing any of 4 National League teams. 4 X 4 =16. Real basic. Bruuuce was WAY OFF!!!

That MIGHT be true if all teams had the same odds to make the World Series Steve. They don't. So you're wrong. Try again.
Do yourself a favor, look it up online.

From mid-September:

Cubs To Win The World Series? Odds Look Good...We'll See

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- With both the Cubs and White Sox closing in on division titles, what are the chances for a crosstown World Series?

WBBM's Regine Schlesinger has been checking with Las Vegas oddsmakers.

Right now, the Cubs are a 7-to-5 favorite to win the National League pennant. Tony Sinisi, odds director for Las Vegas Sports Consultants, says the Sox are more of a long shot, only 6-to-1 to win the American League pennant.

Sinisi says there's always money on the Cubs even though they haven't gone all the way to the world series since 1945.

Right now, he says, the odds for a subway series between the Cubs and Sox are 15-to-1 and the Cubs are given are 3-to-1 shot at winning their first world series in a hundred years.

Post subject:  Re: Critics-ish

Based on his statement, I don't think Bruce was referring to Vegas-type odds of making it to the World Series...just simple mathematical chance.
But even if he was, he's still incorrect. The simple mathematical probability of a White Sox / Cubs World Series, as Bruce was referring to, would be 6.25%.

Author:  The Gridiron Assassin [ Thu Oct 02, 2008 9:29 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Critics-ish

It's quite simple, there are 16 possibilities, and 1/16 = 6.25% as pointed out by Westmont Mike

1 Sox-Phillies
2 Sox-Milwaukee
3 Sox-LADodgers
4 Sox-Cubs
5 Cubs-LAAngels
6 Cubs-Boston
7 Cubs-Tampa
8 Phillies-LAAngels
9 Phillies-Boston
10 Phillies-Tampa
11 Milwaukee-LAAngels
12 Milwaukee-Boston
13 Milwaukee-Tampa
14 Dodgers-LAAngels
15 Dodgers-Boston
16 Dodgers-Tampa

WIth the Cubbies and Brew Crew down 0-2, there's not a chance in hell of any of these happening now:

2 Sox-Milwaukee
4 Sox-Cubs
5 Cubs-LAAngels
6 Cubs-Boston
7 Cubs-Tampa
11 Milwaukee-LAAngels
12 Milwaukee-Boston
13 Milwaukee-Tampa
