Post subject:  Am I the only one?? (dealing with Mac's impersonations)

Let me first begin by saying that I highly enjoy the entertainment value and occassional laugh out loud chuckles the MJH brings to my otherwise boring daily commute. A service that I must say I sincerely appreciate. This if my first post of any kind (calling in or email) as I've always resisted the urge to call a show or post anything. So be kind.

Having said that, am I the only one that thinks that Mac's Dan Dierdorf impersonation sounds more like a cross between Sylvester the Cat and Daffy Duck???? I swear, everything he busts it out, he sounds less and less like Dierdorf and more like the two cartoon characters. Listen closely the next time and try to remember from years gone by Sylvester the cat say, "sufferinn sackutashh" or something like that and tell me that he doesn't sound like it.

Alright, I got that off my chest..again no jabs intended towards Mac, just an observation from a fan when hearing his impersonation.

Later.

I think he and Dahl do the same impression of Dierdorf. I don't know who did it first though. I thought Dahl.

Mac has more opportunity to use it in context though as it is otherwise obscure to most - like my Jarvis Redwine impression.

I laugh every time I hear the impression. Not because it's accurate, it's just funny.

I absolutely giggle whenever I hear "Mac" imitating Dan Dierdorf, complete with his "dislike" for fellow CBS Sports' NFL analyst Phil Simms, not to mention whenever I hear Jan Diggetts...

The impression and entire concept were taken from Dahl. I don't think Mac would deny this. It really is more of an impression of an impression.

Mac isn't the best at voices. His best are Jiggs and Jurko.

Kevin Matthews doing Eddie Schwartz was one of the all-time great impressions, in my opinion.

It is an exaggeration of Jiggs. But that's what makes impersonations good. He makes Jiggs sound like a complete moron. With Jiggs it's more the writing than the voice. "Hmmmmm. Good man. Put that caller on hollllllld. Get me a spinnin' bucket. Hmmmmm"

I get that. I just would never know he was doing Jiggs unless he made it obious to everyone. The voice gurgle is way too pronounced....

Mac also does a good Bert Lahr. amongst his best.

Unfortunately nobody under 40 knows who the hell he is.

Dahl just did Schwartz by talking in a high-pitched falsetto voice. Kevin captured everything in his impression, including the wheezing from being overweight. Steve admitted at one point that he was jealous of Kevin's Eddie because it was so much funnier.

Now you put that together with a JC Watts, or a Major Ogilive(sp?) and a Billy Sims...and now you're talking.

As I said, Kevin's was better. It does not change the fact that Kevin had never actually heard Eddie Schwartz before he started doing the impression. His impression was an enhanced version of Dahl's impression.

Actually, good dolphin, I am denying that I stole my DD impersonation from Dahl. I understand why one might think that. I was a producer/weekend hack at The Loop when Dahl and Meier were the best team in town. Dahl did a Dierdorf impersonation. Easy to connect the dots. Truth is, when I first watched the NFL Films video "Tough Guys," I began my career as a Dierdorf impersonator. He was talking about Conrad Dobler not making the Cardinals... then making the Cardinals. It is an easy impersonation. When I begin teaching a class on impersonations, he will be studied in Week 1.

Can somebody explain to me the obsession with "ripping off" impersonations? Why does one have "exclusivity" on an impersonation? Many do Christopher Walken. My favorite is Kevin Pollack. He may not have been the first, but to me, he does it the funniest. Can I enjoy that, or should I lambast him because he wasn't first in line to do the Walk?

Kevin's Eddie Schwartz was hysterical.

Chi McBride does a fantastic Chrisotpher Walkin. Dan Patrick had him on about 2 months ago or so..

I've been working on this one for a while, tell me what you think.

Christopher Walken - Hey. Look at me. I'm Christopher Walken. I need more Cowbell and Champaign.

Pretty good, huh?

Christopher Walken does an above average Christopher Walken as well.

The Dierdorf impressions are eerily similar not only in style but in content. They are so similar that I thought it was you giving a tip of the cap to Dahl when you did it. If you say it's an original, I'm willing to take it at face value.

I have no problem with people doing an impression of the same person as long as each person is doing his own take on the original subject. Here is an analogy, there are artists who paint original works and then there are artists who paint expert reproductions of original works. Some of the reproductions are absolutely amazing.

In the case of Kevin Mathews, he hadn't even heard Eddie when he started the impression. That does not mean it wasn't funny and did not expand on Dahl's work. It just means that it's genesis is in Dahl.

For the record - I love the Dierdorf impersonation, Mac. As far as Walken, I always harken back to this SNL sketch about Star Wars screen tests:
