Thoughts and well wishes for Grid and his family this weekend. He's my favorite Jon with no h.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. It's gonna be a tough time for my family over the next several months. I brought the boys down to see him last night, and I think it made his week. He's used to me, my older sister and my mom staring at him (and me kicking his ass every evening at Wheel of Fortune).

Max told him (in full hick Talledega Nights accent) - "You'd better get better old man, I'm all jacked up on Mountain Dew - I'm gonna be all over you like a Spider Monkey and I'm gonna shave your balls you old coot!"

My dad just smiled at Max, patted his head, and looked directly at me (with that dad look) - as he knew who gave Max his marching orders.

More troublesome was a former neighbor (only 42) who was in the ICU - 99% blockage of an artery that got a stint two weeks ago, and a 70% blockage that got the balloon treatment this week. Despite his fit 'look' - he's been smoking a pack or two for 20+ years, eating fast food and burning the candle at both ends for far too long. It brightened his day to see me, my sons and Mama Grid visit him.

Anywho.... keep Papa Grid and my bud Kenny Affrunti in your prayers.

GA - although I have never met you, I have found your posts here and emails and calls to the various shows over the years entertaining and thought provoking. I feel like I know you without knowing you.

I hope that all works out for the best for your family - one way or the other, you will be able to look back on the memories of what sound like great times forever.

Best of luck,

Dave

I hope (in the words of Wanny) 'Ah... he'll be fine.' But reality is reality and my old man is as practical as they come.

I thank all of you guys for the well wishes, any support is good support. The underwire bra (developed by Howard Hughes) was very innovative, yet uncomfortable - back in the day.

It's the weekend baby!!!

Judging by the pic of you and your pappy, he looks like a fighter and will pull through this.

Grid - though I had to bring you and the mult army back to earth in the circle jerk contest, I wish you all the best with your pops. It's hell seeing them get old. I'll drop a quarter and light a candle this weekend for your dad among other people.

I wanted to thank you guys again, for keeping my family in your prayers.

Things aren't going so well for my dad. He was happy to get released from the hospital, but after falling down in the house 4 times in 3 days, he's headed back to the hospital, and probably some assisted care facility. This makes me feel better for my Mom, as I could tell on Sunday that she was starting to loose it. The best place for him at this juncture of his life is where people trained for those with failing health can take care of him. That person is not my Mom, who has her own struggles with emphysema.

...thanks again you guys. I really appreciate it! :)

ciao

GRID

PS: If anything good has come out of this, it's my commitment to my own health. I'm working out like a banshee - dropped six lbs this month (probably about another 50 to go). ..and it's not from stress - I'm the first guy to woof down ice cream, chocolate and assorted shit when I'm stressed out. I've probably walked a hundred miles on the eliptical this month. 10 yesterday alone. My 'fitness bunny' daughter couldn't keep up with the old man. Then again, if I tried to do half the 'flexibility' crap she does, I'd probably be in traction.

Post subject:  Re: Good thoughts for Gridiron

It is with great sadness, that I must share with you that my dad passed away at 8:12 tonight.

My sisters and our families were able to spend some quality time with him, after what we thought was some type of coma he slipped into. When they removed the device forcing him to breath, he awoke (and quite honestly surprised the shit out of me). He was able to acknowledge all of my kids, they all told him what they loved the most about him, and they love him. I told him he'd better get well, or I'm going to have to buy the first pitch of overpriced piss warm beer at the Will County Fair this year and take his woman (my mom) as my date. ...and then after some other tender moments, my mom and the families of my sisters and I left for home. My father then peacefully passed away.

I'm so thankful he didn't suffer too long, from the time he initially went in to the hospital, it's been less than a month. ...I understand in some instances, this downward spiral can last as long as two years.

I visited him Saturday Night, and he was clearly fading fast, and the toughest times for me have been when I'm alone logging windshield time. ...and trust me - I spend plent of time driving alone.

You guys may not know this, but in talking to some of you at remotes, etc. it's been very therapeutic and helpful for me. However, I don't want to hear any more crap that I'm 'deeper' than I let on though - and you know who you are! :) . At my core I'm a die hard Bears fan, and a meatball White Sox fan (and loather of Cub fans).

Love the ones your with, cherish every moment you have - and above all - don't sweat the petty shit amongst family members (or with friends) - life is far too short.

I honor my father tonight, with my trusty sidekick, my son and lil best buddy, Max sitting beside me - as he just read this aloud to me, and we shared a special father son 'man' hug:

Image

The Dash
copyright 1996 Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth...
and now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own;
the cars....the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard...
are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile...
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
with your life's actions to rehash...
would you be proud of the things they
say about how you spend your dash?

God bless all of you, your families and your friends.

I'm so sorry Grid. Words can't always ease the pain, but I hope they can in this case. Remember the good times and live in the moment. Cherish every moment with family and friends and live life to the fullest. I'm not sure what else I can offer, but hang in there and take comfort in friends and family.

Be happy there weren't any Dallas cops around.

You're very lucky to have all been able to say your goodbyes, and he's lucky not to have suffered very much at all. Take care this week, Beef.

Thanks Frank. It took me awhile on the Dallas cops joke, as I was thinking what my dad had to with JFK, but the light bulb finally turned on. Ryan Moats. ding ding ding ding...
I always go to humor for solace. Thanks again.
