Sammy Sosa is the answer to both (putting any ped use aside and looking at results)

Ryne Sandberg is probably the answer to both.

No way. Not for either question (putting PEDs aside)

I mean, you could make an argument for Sandberg being more valuable in things that arent measured by numbers, but there is no way he was ever as popular.

Cub fan: Oh, the Cubs traded Campana huh? He was a fun guy to watch on the bases.

SCORE: OMG, YOU LOVE HIM!!! STOP BEING AN IDIOT

To be fair, Campana was trending on twitter yesterday, and our very own Bigfan said that Campana was a GREAT guy to have on the bench.

He is a great bench player, for a team that might be close to winning something. Not for a rebuilding team.

I believe Otis Nixon averaged 59 Stolen bases a year and basically didnt learn to slap hit until he was 32. Over 90% of his hits were singles and I am not sure how many of those were bunts, but he played for 3 straight Bobby Cox division winners in Atlanta and he is about as similar as I can find to Campana, as a guy that should never start, but play late in every game.

Then we define the word great differently. A one tool player is not great, no matter how you spin it.

Maybe if they teach him some slap bunts, he can hit some singles, etc.

However, he is a great bench player to have. 2 Years ago when I saw his stats of 66 SB's, i was shocked they never called him up. Even if he hit .100, the stats don't lie, the kid could move.

Now I have seen him play for a few weeks and he can play defense and he can run. Sure he cant hit, but it is what was expected.

This is the type of player I have wanted the Cubs to have as a 5th OF for yearrrrsss! Especially during any playoff run!

He does not hit into double plays, he is just too fast. He will steal bases. The guy is a late inning pinch runner.

Hendry has never signed that type of player, but I know who did for about 14 years. Bobby Cox! I think tht guy might know somethings. Otis Nixon.

You said he was a great bench player to have for a 71-91 team.

Fine, he is a great player for a 71 win team. Happy?

If you had a team that might contend, would you be ok with him as your 5th OF, especially in the NL?

Down 1 in the 7th, pinch hitter gets on, Otis Nixon would steal 2nd and 3rd and score on a deep fly. The value of that type of player is unique, to a team that is competing for a title and every game matters.

A team rebuilding and going to be in 3rd , at the very best and wanting to see other players in the OF.

So as far as my 5th OF's go, he is a GREAT 5th OF for a competing team.

Otis Nixon played 1700 games. Campana can't get off the bench on a terrible team.

The Oakland A's started the "designated pinch runner" thing when they carried a guy who could only do one thing, run. I forgot his name, maybe a young Claudell Washington? Otis Nixon was a good comparison but did those Brave teams carry 11 pitchers or 10 back then? It's hard carrying a "specialist" withh 11 pitchers on the roster.

Matt Alexander did it as well.

NUH UH.... 2001 CALLED, IT WANTS ITS ARGUMENTS BACK. IT'S ALL ABOUT WAR.

Remember Dave Roberts' clutch baserunning in the 2004 ALCS? 0.3 WAR for Boston in 45 games. His ALCS was 0/2 with 2R and 1SB. HE. DIDN'T. EVEN. PLAY. IN. THE. WORLD. SERIES.

Who's to say that they don't let Kevin Millar (2.5 WAR) run the bases and his lack of SB threat causes the pitch sequence to change and a pitch slightly slips out of Rivera's hand and we get a big dramatic 2 run HR? Since Millar was worth 2.5 replacement players and, by definition, Dave Roberts was essentially a replacement player, Francona made the wrong move pinch running for Millar, which again clearly would have resulted in a game-winning 2R HR.

In other words, my argument makes no sense whatsoever and basically I just wanted to lampoon the concept that you're wrong because hi-tech statistics say that certain players are better than others because of the #s, and I, for one, wait with bated breath for the day that that weird Baxter computer with a creepy "face" gets a chance to manage ballgames and W/Ls are no longer subject to fluky crap like "luck" because Pythagoreas was the greatest baseball mind to never live within a few hundred years of the game.

Excuse me while I go vote for SHARK and Jack in the Box tacos for the B&B HOF, aka radio unobtainium.

Nobody needs to look at metrics to see that Campana is bad. The only thing he can do is run, and he can't steal first base.

Do you want a late inning, defensive replacement with no arm? On a base hit to Campana, Konerko could score from second. Alright, not Konerko, but everybody else.

Well it looks like someone in Arizona thought he might be pretty good. Most teams dont trade 17 year old pitchers, they collect them and see whose arms pan out.

There has to be another one of these guys in the system. First it was Greenberg, then the guy that got traded to the Rays, then Tony C.

Theo gave John Lackey $82.5 million over 5 years. That doesn't make him good.

Campana is an afterthought in the Cubs vision of moving forward. Little no hit fast flea that can run. By Bye. Get what you can for him while ya can. Great trade IMO.
