According to Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago.com, the Cub are going to make a run at Cincinnati Red outfielder Shin-Soo Choo this offseason.

He's LH, draws a lot of walks.. but what's the market going to be on this guy? The only other big time FA OF is Ellsbury... would this be a Werth-like signing? I guess if they feel Choo is going to be a part of the contending.. Choo is in his age 31 season. We already know how Pasta feels about this...

I have to imagine that given the two players, Theo would rather have his guy Ellsbury. Jacoby hasn't been a big hit with his teammates in Boston so maybe Theo will shy away from him. On the other hand, his teammates in Boston before this year were a bunch of puds.

If/when they sign an OF this offseason, I wouldn't expect him to be signed for more than 3 years and would expect him to be able to play CF.

Why waste money on players 30+ years of age?. Let the rebuild run its course.

My guess would be the Orient Express are going to be in for an unusual time when they face the Bushwackers at the Rosemont Horizon.

Choo is interesting. I don't think he will be available for an acceptable amount of years and numbers.

Agreed. Otherwise the Reds, (who have no CF) would sign him.

Find some other dumbass who is willing to stand on the plate and get hit 100 times per year. Thats why he is on base all the damn time. He has had injury issues, work ethic concerns and was kind of a shithead when he left Cleveland. No thanks. Get to work on my guy Headley boys.

Was he the guy Cleveland brought over from Japan who was later found out to have been in gay porn?

Bullshit. I don't want them to sign any free agent outfielders. They have a stockpile of young outfielders now and whether it's Soler, Almora Jackson, Bryant (if he's converted to the OF, which many predict)or even Baez who may wind up in the OF (with over 40 errors playing SS this season), or a number of other possibilities, they have good prospects. No need to spend big money on an outfielder, especially when the team's pitching is not ready. If they spend big dollars on a player, it should be a top of the rotation starter.

I believe that was a pitcher and not Choo. I would wait for KS' expert opinion though.

Are you going to tip your big hat and make one appear Mr. Wizard? They don't exist in free agency this year.

I'm pretty sure that was Nick Swisher. No idea what he was doing in Japan, but I'm sure he asked many people how they say bro.

They are not ready for it anyway. After next season, I believe Max Scherzer is a free agent, amongst others. No sense in signing guys that might get injured to big contracts, before the team is ready to truly contend. The team is about 2 years away from the point where they really should be looking over free agents to be. By that time Baez, Almora, Soler, Bryant and Olt may all be playing at the major league level and developing. No need to sign guys now just to be a .500 team. That's only going to waste money and result in a crappy draft pick. Timing is everything where free agent acquisition is concerned. The time is definitely not this year.

He's a platoon player. One of the only decent guys in a terrible free agent class. Dude is going to get WAY overpaid.

PASS.

His splits are horrific. No way should he ever face a lefty.

God damn!!! Those are awful splits. I'm just used to him playing everyday. Keep Nasty Nate. They are the same player and 1 is cheap as hell. Sure Choo gets on base a little bit more but the monetary difference is off the charts.

Choo is a career .240 hitter with a .336 obp against lefties. Not awful.

I might be for it but he'll be too expensive.

Eventually you're gonna have to add some reasonable FA

I'm with the people saying let him re-up with the Red or go to somewhere like the Yankee and get overpaid.

Although, I would get a chuckle out of seeing him mess up the Cub or Red payroll for a few years. The only big-money FA contract given to an OF over 30 in recent years that I can recall working out is Holliday.

(Soriano, Bay, Werth, all to some degree looked really bad after a year or two)

Fortunately, the broken-down 1B who hasn't been quite the same player since more stringent testing came into the game now plays for the Angel for the low cost of $252 million.

Nothing a trip down to TJ can't fix for him.
