CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs are placing recently demoted reliever Neil Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right triceps, the team announced Tuesday.

“All year we’ve been talking about giving these guys a rest,” general manager Jed Hoyer explained before the Cubs played the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. “That was the intention, to give him a rest. We’ve tried our hardest to be careful with him, as far as getting him up and down and (pitching) back-to-back days.”

The Cubs curiously sent Ramirez to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, the day after his last appearance. He was in the midst of a stellar rookie year, putting up a 0.96 ERA to go along with a 0.93 WHIP and three saves over the course of 28 innings pitched this season. He never appeared in a game for Iowa before going on the disabled list.

“That was probably the right way to handle it once he came up sore,” Hoyer said.

Hoyer admitted the Cubs talked to the Major League Baseball Players Association, as resting a player by demoting him to the minor leagues could be viewed as an attempt to save on a major league salary, but Ramirez was placed on the major league disabled list, retroactive to his last appearance Friday.

The Cubs say they’ll try to find more rest for a young group of relievers who have been taxed by shorter outings from starters Travis Wood and Edwin Jackson.

“I think we’ve seen a dip in performance in our young relievers,” Hoyer said. “They all look a little bit tired.”

I know a team that would trade for this kid in a second.

It sucks for Cubs fans that the team continues to act like the smallest market team in the country. All this talk about saving service time for prospects several years away from big paydays is disappointing.

We don't know whats true. Maybe its nothing, maybe the Cubs got caught with their hand in the cookie jar and the MLBPA said that they had better put this kid on the MLB DL.

According to them it was pre planned rest for a young pitcher.

I dont think it has anything to do with service time. I think it may have to do with roster movement of other guys.

So what's the difference between DL and AAA except service time?

But that's a snaky way to "rest" your young guys. Obviously the Union wasn't going to like it.

Speaking of which, Spiegel thinks they should only be pitching terrible guys and Arrieta should be shut down so he doesn't get hurt. It's so strange how much different the viewpoint of guys who never pay for tickets is from mine.

Ramirez didnt come up til Apr 25th. No matter what he's not getting a full year of service time this year. So they wouldnt be saving anything.

Except salary.

You can be removed from the 40 man on one but not the other, I believe.


But its' moot, because Ramirez was in the minors long enough in April that they wouldnt even be saving anything service time wise.

Are you saying if he was up from 4-25 til now ...2 weeks on D.L. and returns to the majors for the remainder of the season ...that's not a year of service ?

In the other thread ("the shit show"), I questioned the Cubs' explanation for why they were sending him down, as "rest" didn't make any sense for someone who had pitched only 6 innings in July and 28 innings all year. I thought it was more likely that the poor performance of the Cubs' starters and heavily taxed pen was forcing them to bring up fresh arms and Ramirez (who was only pitching in tiny spurts) was the most expendable despite being their best pitcher. I don't really know what to believe now that it turns out he is hurt.

But is he really hurt? Or was it just going to be a slap in the face to all the young guys they are building with to take a guy who has performed like Ramirez and fuck with his salary because they don't want to work him hard in a losing season and need innings eaters out of the bullpen after they traded away half the rotation? Not to mention the Player's Union was probably going to go apeshit.

So if you miss like 15 days, you're good. He missed 25+

Reminds me of Kasper the other day talking about why the Cubs might decide not to bring up Bryant this year...that maybe it would be good for a player to enjoy and look back on "a great year in the minors" without possibly struggling at the MLB level in September. The contortions these guys are going through to justify the Cubs' moves are amazing.
