can you imagine if american baseball had relegation/promotion like european soccer? the cubs might have hit the equivalent of baseball's league one back in the 90s when they had the lineup with the "bermuda triangle" of blauser orie and servais.

I like our system of promoting and relegating the players themselves more than promoting and relegating the clubs. The disparity in venue size and market size makes it impossible. The major leagues have never had true small markets, if you think about it.

But if you had a system like they do in soccer instead of a monopoly like baseball, it would put a drag on the clubs in the largest markets. Baseball always talks about expansion, but they never want to expand in the most logical places, like another team in New York. Of course, the existing franchises would never allow it. But if a guy like Jay-Z could just put together a team in Brooklyn and enter one of the leagues, it would be a natural drag on the mighty Yankees and the big market Mets. That's a lot more American than monopolies and salary caps.

How many checks have they actually written to those 3 pitchers?

I don't think a month of Baez is going to help them do that.

I figured he was talking about when they were clear of the Comcast deal and could do whatever they want.

No, I'm talking about the current deal for the non Comcast games. I do agree that the empty seats are secondary to player development but the idea of getting some of "the kids" up here now is something the marketing guys want and need badly. They already are pushing this weekend's games saying "Come watch Javy"...

When it comes to business, nothing gets by you Frank. I think I should hire you.

Maybe you can cut some deals with some Seinfeld quotes?

That's what makes this so difficult.

No way in Hell do I want the Cubs to touch that contract!! They would be better off to find 3 starters that can win 12-15 games each and give you 170-200 innings (for the short term).

Theo has done a credible job finding veteran starters. He should keep doing that.

I'm just trying to get ahead....

I think SR86 is the one bid for that chair.

THURSDAY: ESPN’s Jayson Stark reports that the previous details of Hamels’ no-trade clause were slightly incorrect, however the error is notable: the Red Sox are on Hamels’ no-trade clause, while the Cubs, according to Stark, are not (Twitter link). It’s still not known if the Cubs were the team to claim Hamels, but if they are the claiming team, he would not have any veto power over a potential deal.

I'm with you, Jimmy. Not a fan of giant contracts for pitchers.

That's a fairly reasonable post.

You okay? :D

JimmyPasta: I hate Theo and the Cubs. They won't spend money to put a decent product on the field.

Theo and the Cubs: We put in a claim on Cole Hamels, one of the top pitchers in the game, and are willing to take on the remaining $96M on his contract to anchor the staff on the Cubs for the foreseeable future.

JimmyPasta: I hate Theo and the Cubs. Why would they ever pay anyone that much money?

Wasnt this always the assumption? Build the minors full of top prospects and start moving some up to the bigs and some away for trades.

Didnt Homer Bailey just get 100M? Pitchers cost a lot of money. Fuck it, its time to win. You have to take a chance on pitching.
