I'm not crazy about Hammels , but Castro and Baez suck .. That's a good trade for the Cubs .

I just wonder if they did land Hamells ..do they not grab a Cueto or Price or Greinke this off season.. Then no , don't make the trade.

Everyone seems to forget that the Cubs are going to have to lock up Arrietta this offseason (or stand to lose him in FA) and right now he is going to cost you $20 million per.

He isn't a Free Agent until 2018. Lock him up long term if you can, but don't give him $20M a season during his arbitration years.

That's why your first call should be to the Mets or Braves. I don't think he'll cost that much after only 2 years of pitching well.

At least Arrietta is showing every sign to be worthy of that money unlike Samardzija or losing pitcher Jon Lester.

Detroit would probably have no interest in Baez or Castro. You'd have to give them more.

Cubs are going to sign him in the offseason anyway.

That's the way it goes: Cubs say they want him and they get him.

I know it's alot of dough but I can see that being Theo's plan. Get Hammels at the deadline since he is already locked up and then go after one of the big three FA next yearhh. Ricketts have the money. I'm all in.

Or I'm totally full of shit and just a Cubs fan who loves new toys, which is probably more realistic then spending half a billion on starting pitching. I can dream though.

They're going to have cheap bats for a while so they can do it.

That would be two lefties who have dominated in a World Series on the Cub roster.

I dont like Hamels but Castro and Baez wont get you anything near the value of him so if you HAVE to trade them...

I personally would rather keep both than get a shitty pitcher with a bad contract. Hamels sucks now.

I'm open to give Hamels some benefit of the doubt because his team has sucked so hard. Being on a winning team might get the competitive juices flowing again.

here's a guy i wouldn't mind the cubs taking some interest in - mat latos. i know he is not exactly at the top of his game right now, but he is still young and he won't command the same steep price tag of some of the others. this is his contract year, but if you can somehow get a guy like him who still has some upside potential and then hit the free agent market hard and try to get one of the big boys, you could really have a pretty stout starting 5 next year. all in all he has been a pretty solid starter during his career so far.

if you had plenty, you wouldn't have to trot out dallas beeler or clayton richard every fifth day. latos is a better option than that caliber of pitcher. i just would rather trade for a decent rotation arm now if possible, and aim for the sky in free agency after the season.
