The problem with Heyward is that the Cubs paid him based on the hope that they could raise his ceiling. At least with Lester, they were just hoping for him to replicate past performance. Even that is difficult to obtain.

And Heyward has not only failed to raise his ceiling, he's fallen through the floor.

Exactly. Thinking he might hit over .290 as he did last season would be silly, for a guy who has a career average around .260. But to expect he might attain numbers around .260 12 60 would be reasonable. He will fall woefully short of those numbers unless he were to go on one hell of a run. I didn't understand how they could blow 184 million on a guy who would only produce those kinds of numbers. But to get the kind of awful production he has supplied is ridiculous. Had they chosen to start Almora all season in his place they would have gotten better production and just as good if not better defense. Had they chosen to have Szczur in RF instead, they would also have been better off. The signing has been an unmitigated disaster so far.

If Heyward makes a game saving catch in the WS it was well worth it

Well you were wrong, because he will only be fine for one month of the season.

I mean...if you meant he'd be 'fine' because he wouldn't die this season...good job so far but you're not out of the woods yet...?

I would rather he get hot in October and November than be hot in April or May.

Well, the great thing about baseball is that most players don't need to sacrifice 5 months of the season to the baseball devil in order to be good for the postseason.

I hope he plays well from here on out too...but unless he reaches safely during each postseason plate appearance and robs a home run from the Rangers to clinch the World Series...I'm not sure you can say "all is forgiven" quite that easily.

You're not going to look at any postseason success and say "that happened because he struggled through August."

If he helps them win the WS all is forgiven.

how can anyone say edlose jackson? he was a perfect signing because he was brought in at 4/52 to 1) lose as many games as possible to help you cement high draft picks like babe bryant and kyle "babe FUCKING ruth" schwarber (and to that end he delivered) and 2) to shut up the cranky minority of fans who weren't 100% on board with THE PLAN (and if anyone here should be down with any plan that involves shutting up minorities it's elmwurst steev!)

so yeah while i reckon the ultimate thing to be gleamed here is "WITH [SIGNING] BALCKS YOU LOSE!" still, at least one of the 2 guys here was brought in to be an experienced (~15+ games/season) loser, and to that end edlose jackson came out and provided quality shitty-innings every 5th day for 150+ innings a year and up to 18 losses per year. ergo, when you stop and think about some of the nice draft picks that his shitty performances helped the cubs get, how can you say he was a bad signing? he did exactly what he was supposed to do!
