When it became apparent that he was going to do the hop on every routine ground ball, and many criticized it, I took the position that I was ok with it, just so long as it doesn't cause him to fuck up. Never did I think he'd find a way to injure himself with this hop. Good grief.

This is the second time now in as many seasons where he's been injured doing, basically, nothing. That's very troubling.

I knew I would find this thread. Yep, it caused him to get hurt. Many people thought it would cost a big error. Nope. Just a long injury.

I want to find Soriano and kick him in the nuts to complete the injury.

the way he has started this season hitting and fielding, there is going to be at least a short-term improvement in production from the lineup, whoever leads off. sure, they will miss his power when he hits his mostly solo home runs, but maybe someone can lead off and draw a walk and get on base somehow, so lee can drive some more in. im not a soriano hater, but having him at leadoff was hurting this team more than this injury will.

One has to wonder just how many times Ripkin, Banks etc were dealing with an injury and played trough it. I know now the days of BIG MONEY means little injuries mean more, but come on. And then this Hop stuff, please. Just play ball like a professional without all the WWE stuff. That goes for football dances too. Enough.

This hop was going to bite the Cubs in the ass sooner or later. It caused a seemingly significant injury (as far as time missed), or it would have caused an error. For him to miss ONE play or one game because of that hop is inexcusable. The coaches are just as much to blame here for allowing this hop to continue. He's a butcher is the outfield as is, so why he feels the need to hop when he does catch a ball is beyond me.

I thought Lou was supposed to be this no-nonsense, all business guy preaching fundamentals.

Soriano gets hurt hot-dogging it again. The other night, that dog Ramirez stood and watched a fly ball stay in the park, then had to hustle to barely get into second in a two run game in the ninth inning.

Say what you want about Ozzie, but he gets on his guys (Uribe) when they dog it.

Maybe they can hire Kenny to yell at their players? Bigfan would love it!

I always have thought Soriano was pretty overrated, and even more so since he has been with the Cubs. I wouldnt be surprised if this injury doesnt hurt the team at all.

Its already hurt them in the pocketbook, but I agree with you with Soriano being overrated.

i am not a fan of the hop, but i am not in the "stop the hop" camp either. i did find this quote on the cubs website from soriano regarding why he does it, and he has a pretty interesting take:

"I feel comfortable catching the ball that way," said Soriano, who added it when he moved to left field in Washington. "I don't like to catch the ball routine because when I played second base, I made errors on a lot of routine ground balls. I make the little jump to make the play a little difficult. That doesn't make the play a routine fly ball. It looks like it to me that it's not comfortable."

that is a pretty weird idea, make the play more difficult, so it is easier. hey, he hasnt dropped any balls because of it, so i guess it works for him.

He needs to stop the hop, its stupid and while I dont think it caused his injury he is eventually going to drop a flyball at a bad time do that crap. Play baseball, catch the ball and get it in, stop the dancing, its bush.

As far as his contract goes, most teams have players with bad contracts, its just the way it is. I think he will be gone in 2 or 3 years and a DH for a AL team, while his contract might seem bad now, just wait, it will look like in a deal in a year or two.

Your second point is analogous to your first. I agree that the hop is silly and unnecessary. However, it will seem reserved and conservative in a few years as the PAY ATTENTION TO ME syndrome grows. Idiosyncratic behavior has always been part of baseball, but it is becoming obtrusive and counterproductive.
Also, Soriano should be moved to an AL team during his contract with the Cubs. How much they eat of that contract remains to be seen, although I suspect it will be a very large portion.

while i am not a big fan of the game that soriano has, and am not thrilled by his contract, im not ready to start talking about getting rid of his contract quite yet. he does bring some things to the table, and this additional leg injury may finally force the cubs to move him down in the order. assuming he comes back from this injury in a couple of weeks, he can still put up some big-time power numbers.

his contract is too long and too much in my opinion, but we have him, and he does have some torrid streaks of hitting. id like to see him hitting 5th, and see what he can do. i know he doesnt want to and all that, im just saying that is a spot i think he could do some damage.

Stone made a great point today, he stated that Soriano will most likely be the victim of leg injuries the remainder of his career. He believes this is due to his body type, and his inability/ unwillingness to listen to coaching or adapt his game to "situational" baseball like most veterans do when their physical skills start to diminish. Unfortunately there is nowhere to hide a guy making 18mil a year, i mean the guy doesn't really even have a position?

I believe he would've incurred the injury with or without the hop. Remember, he has been injured before running the bases. Who's to say that it wouldn't have happened at that point. It was obviously a weak area. I'm more concerned about his brittle nature then some post-catch routine.

I think I may write a parody song for MJH this weekend about this whole ordeal...

I can sort of see where he's coming from looking at it from an infielder's perspective. Sometimes it's harder to make a play on a ball hit right at you because you have time to think about making a mistake.. On a ball hit to your left or your right, you don't have time to think; you just react.

The outfield is different, though. You don't have to worry about bad hops, and most of the time you don't have to worry about throwing a runner out. So, Soriano is full of shit.

Weird. Works if you substitute Wood.

 Is he also currently predicting a recession, trouble in the Democratic party, and a bad start for the Tigers?

I enjoy Stone but he is the king of predictions after-the-fact.
