Recent Gordon Wittenmyer:
And this front office has produced next to nothing on the pitching side – not one homegrown pitcher throwing a playoff pitch the last four years and not one drafted by this regime on the roster now.

2016 MLB draft:
34. St. Louis Cardinals : RHP Dakota Hudson, Mississippi State (Compensation for JASON HEYWARD, who signed with the Cubs. Chicago forfeited its second pick.)
Callis: What a great value for the Cardinals here. Hudson didn't pitch as well in the SEC Tournament or NCAA regionals as he did earlier in the year, but his fastball-slider combination is one of the more devastating arsenals in the Draft. Whether he is a starter or a reliever, it's a power arm that you wouldn't expect to get to No. 34. If St. Louis didn't take him here, the Reds were going to pounce on the next pick.

Dakota Hudson on Cardinals current roster. 24 years old. 11 starts. 3.53 career MLB era.

I thought Cubs management's philosophy regarding team building was to focus on position players vs. pitchers in the minors unfortunately I can't remember their reasoning :?

Pitchers drafted in the first 3 rounds bust out at a way higher percentage than position players. Especially college bats, which have the highest success rate in the first few rounds.

I know what pitchers have high percentage bust out rates : The ones Theo decides to throw money away on.

I guess since they traded their one good pitching prospect for a great contract they can give money to Gerrit Cole next year and hope he pans out. Also will probably have to pay for Kimbrell this year since the closer they already threw money away on has been D.O.A. That is unless the Twins outbid them.

And the majority say that this is a horrible draft for pitching. Perfect !

Yeah, you say that, except...

Cubs Team Stats
2019:
#7 in ERA
#5 in QS%
#7 in Starting Pitchers' Average Game Score

Previous years were similar or better
2018 #3 in ERA
2017 #7 in ERA
2016 #1 in ERA
2015 #3 in ERA

Yes, it bothers me when another team has yet another young, up and coming 'live arm.' But no team's pitching has been as strong as the Cubs' pitching over the last 5 seasons. The Cubs have had some of the best pitching and best hitting in baseball year after year. The Cubs' strategy has worked exceedingly well.

You can put up stat after stat.

The Cubs are short on pitching. Any Cub fan being honest can see that.

Then every team is short on pitching.

And Cubs fans as a whole have never been known as the smartest or most keyed in of fan bases.

So you are comfortable with the starting staff and bullpen?

Theo and Hoyer have been with the Cubs for 7 and a half years.

I am more than pleased with so MANY things that have been accomplished, but that is a long time to not hit on a stud pitcher in the draft.

Not the pen, I'm cool with the starters this year. We have a bunch of 2 or 3 starters in Hendricks, Lester n Hamels. Quintana n Darvish are 4th starter quality. The pen needs two arms added, and I'm not counting Strop as one of the additions.

They haven't tried and failed. They've gone in a different, yet successful, direction.

This guy here gets it. Anyone citing Gamescores as some sort of relevant stat is clearly not a smart or keyed in fan.

Stop moving your goalposts.

No goalposts were moved. I said the Cubs were short on pitching. You posted stats that I guess were supposed to make my opinion incorrect. I asked you if you were comfortable with the pitching. You just have to answer yes or no.

Remember when Mike and BeBe North used to do a weird Honeymooners spoof for some bar and grill named Dakotas? This was 40+ years after the 2 season comedy show had been off the air.
