Sure he had the balls to go after Starlin Castro for bad play. He didn't go after Rizzo and Bryant for being disrespectful to the hitting coach and running him out of town.

I expect the new field manager to have more of a focus on those five things, and the general manager to trade away the players who sucked the most egregiously in the first four categories.

Doesn’t sound like those are fixable by a manager . Guess we’ll see.

The Cards sucked on the basebaths and made a ton of errors under Matheny. That changed under Shildt. So I do think a manager can make a difference with those.

They'll make a lot of changes to the roster too. Bryant or Baez will be traded.

There is absolutely no chance Javy Baez is going to be traded.

Stop yourself.

Despite Ausmus sucking as a manager his last go around in Detroit and then this season posting the most losses for the franchise since....Joe Maddon managed the Angels, there was still a narrative for the Angels to bring him back for another season. Angels were above .500 prior to Skaggs death and then had injuries to their 2 best players. Plus their rotation wasn't rotating, or was rotating too much: only one pitcher posted 100+ innings for the Angels this season, Trevor Cahill with 102. Assume they pulled the trigger on firing Ausmus now b/c Maddon's available.

Angels fans seem meh on the Ausmus for Maddon swap; more fired up about sending Eppler packing and bringing in Dombrowski. Or bring in Dombrowski as head of baseball ops or whatever over Eppler.

Bryant could be traded. Baez and Rizzo are going nowhere. I've heard people on the Score say Contreras could go but he does not seem easily replaceable.

stop yourself. Baez is not a Theo guy. The other four guys are: Schwarbs, Rizzo, Bryant and Nico. Wouldn't be the least surprised to see Baez leave town.

GTFOH with Theo guy bullshit.

What does that have to do with winning baseball games?

Yeah, there is a less than zero percent chance Baez gets traded this offseason.

This was about the most stupid personnel decision in all of Chicago sports, other than firing Coach Q.

Maddon's the smartest manager ever to go through Chicago on the North or South side, and of course they would let him go.

Let's not kid ourselves, it's all about saving a few million by not having to pay him to renew. Maddon only did the impossible and won the Cubs a World Series.

No to all of this.

There have been Fire Maddon posts here since 2016 playoffs. What he does wrong is very evident, and what he does right is fairly intangible. He was great with a young, inexperienced team. He was good in Tampa with the same type of team. But he doesn't seem to work as well with veterans, he scapegoated Mallee and he isn't good with the pitching staff in games.

3 disappointing seasons, each worse than the previous, is enough.

Getting rid of Maddon isn't in the same universe as getting rid of Quenneville. The Hawks fired Quenneville disgracefully in the middle of a season and installed a flunky with little meaningful experience who tried to install a system diametrically opposed to the one the Hawks had been running for ten years. Maddon was sent off on good terms (so far -- we haven't gotten the ol' Boston Hatchet Job on him quite yet) despite much more mismanagement than Quenneville ever committed.

As bad as Q?
That's an all time bad thought.
Maddon's shit wore thin in Tampa, they told us it would wear thin here too. It did.
You can only fire so many pitching and hitting coaches before you look up the ladder. This team, 2019, was awful all season long. Now I won't pretend there were no holes in the talent pool, there are plenty. But this team was way too complacent and that's a cultural thing. I'm done with the baseball lebowski and want someone who will hold players sat least somewhat accountable.

Thanks Joe!

No way to even begin to defend that decision. Use a lefty specialist that has gotten clobbered all year against right handed hitters and leave him in the game until he has given up 7 runs in 2 innings......with the Brewers still trying to catch the Cardinals in the division, that was a shit thing to do.

Ayala is probably a year away, but Caratini could take over for a year if they got an offer they really wanted to go with.

Maddon said the front office also "wanted to control more of what was occurring in just about everything." Despite that, he said he still likes Epstein, but it was time for the two sides to part ways.

Wow. Raw Deal Joe? I mean, what the hell was he supposed to do with the roster he was given last season?

Is it possible Theo has more of a mess on his hands now than he did when he first got here?

There's work to be done. I still think Theo can be the one to clean it up successfully.

But the front office certainly made some poor moves.

2021 World Series celebration on his way out? Going to have an extended celebration due to a lockout delaying the next season.
