Farmer was a universally loved human being who should never have had to do PBP when John Rooney left.

Why was Reinsdorf obsessed with former players doing play-by-play, and why was Jason Benetti the one who made him stop?

I think Brooks Boyer was the one who forced that change.

I figured Weird Jerry was a big fan of those Phil Rizzuto/Bill White booths the Yankees had in the '70s and '80s and wanted to bring that New York "excellence" to Chicago. (Bill White, a black guy who sounded like Kermit the Frog, was Deej before Deej.) Same reason for the originally-Dodger-blue New Comiskey Park, probably.

I think that Reinsdorf loves to reward longtime loyal employees, and one of the places you can stick former players is the broadcast booth. He is also a diversity guy so he loves to be a trailblazer in hiring minorities as well. Chris Singleton was good in the booth, and has had success. DJ is fine. He didn't work well with Hawk, but who does?

I loved listening to Ed Farmer and John Rooney do Sox radio, as much as I liked Pat Hughes in his heyday with Santo doing Cubs radio, two PBP guys at the top of their games and a couple of quirky, homer, ex-players doing the color. Both were great. It's when they lost Rooney to the Cards and put Ed in at PBP that things got so out of control. Likewise, I feel Pat has lost a few mph off his fastball after 25 years at Wrigley (unfortunately), and Coomer isn't bad, but he's no Santo. I heard a lot of Ernie Harwell doing Tigers games and the decline was sad to see as time went on. Like now, the Tigers use Jim Price as color guy, who played from 1967 to 71- that's 50 years ago!. Sure, he knew Al Kaline well (he shook Sinatra's hand!!), but the delivery is getting pretty stale. His PBP guy Dan Dickerson can only do so much.

Masur was dull, not that excitable is better, but I think Kasper will be an improvement.

That's all true. I was also thinking about how he replaced Harry with Don Drysdale.

Singleton was pretty rough with Farmer to the point where Bernstein called it a "wonderful deus ex machina" that ESPN signed Singleton in the eleventh hour and opened up a spot for Steve Stone, but then Singleton turned out to be really good at ESPN.

That was LaRussa and Einhorn that pushed for Harry and Jimmy to be let go.

I thought it was more Harry being unhappy with SportsVision

Well, whatever pushed Harry and Jimmy out the door, going with the former Dodger was an interesting choice.

fucking asshole Drysdale was so anti-cub during the 84 NLCS

ABC even played 'CUB BUSTERS' song on one of the broadcasts (parody of 'Ghostbusters' song which was a big hit during that year due to the movie).

I will never forgive him.

Calling Cubs games is worse than this.

Well, it's not malicious. Just really embarrassing.
