Not really a big decision. Trade him
Obvious choice. Marlins have lots of young pitching. Should be able to get a major league starter and two good prospects.
What?
That would be significantly more return than Darvish
Contreras is not getting paid $52M over the next three years. He is a bargain. A #5 starter and two guys at who don't have to be put on the 40 man right now is more than fair.
So you believe Contreras has more value than Darvish?
I'm gonna have to disagre. 52 million for 3 years for a guy coming off a Cy Young type season amd 1.5 years beige top 5 pitcher in baseball is not bad value
To me good prospects means top 10 in the organization they are coming from. I highly doubt Contreras is getting 2 of those guys AND an mlb starter
From an analytical $/marginal win, yes. But only because he is a catcher and catcher offense is a black hole for many contending teams. Contreras immediately becomes the Marlins 3 or 5 hitter. Alfaro is a slug who will be included just to save face.
From a who is more important in an elimination game? Darvish, no question.
That all said, I think Contreras could just as easily go to the Yankees for Clint Frazier, maybe in a three way deal that gifts Gary Sanchez to a bottom feeder like Colorado or Arizona for rehabilitation and flipping.
