Outside of Santo who was brutal the last few years, I can't think of one broadcaster that made me not listen or listen to a game in any sport.

Let's revisit that after about 50-60 games of that wonderful Chris Myers and Jim Deshaies Booth you're going to get all season

Fuck Len, I'm glad he's gone.

He has this strange thing where he has a great RADIO voice (and always thought he did), but his style is not suited for radio. He is a dude of few words and will have to be more descriptive of shit on the radio. But I think he will adjust just fine.

His voice has always seemed like a calm radio voice of yesteryear, a voice youd hear on radio at night in the rural Midwest with the crackling in the background.

Could you give me a breakdown of Chris Myers strengths and weaknesses in the booth?

I've been really surprised by the positive response of Sox fans and unhappiness of Cub fans on the matter. I always considered average at best, certainly not someone who would compel me to listen.

Agreed.

And radio is going to be a radically different medium that he is going to have to adapt to quite quickly.

He will need to provide the picture to his listeners, that the TV cameras once did for him.

I was upset in 2004 when Chip Caray left for Atlanta and Steve Stone quit in a huff because it came on the heels of a very disappointing on-field season and it felt like insult to injury. Even if Chip wasn't everyone's favorite, he was a constant, and trading a known for an unknown can be uncomfortable at first.

Len did a very good job ingratiating himself with online fans, both of the Cubs and the larger Fire Joe Morgan crowd that still lingers on (though he couldn't match Benetti actually pulling Michael Schur himself in as a guest announcer). I think a lot of the anger is that One Of The Smart Ones is about to be replaced by someone who's probably dumb, which such fans take personally.

where do people get that Len is smart?

We are very close in age and I know a ton of people who had to have gone to Marquette with him. I'll see if anyone knows him

He talks about OPS, likes alternative bands, and doesn't throw a shitfit when Latino players are happy. That's enough to demonstrate to people that you're not some villain of baseball like Joe Simpson.

Nothing against Kasper, but he's amongst the multitude of modern play by play guys that all sound the same and are afraid to be labeled as "homers", which makes them incredibly boring.

Carey, Brickhouse, and Hawk were somewhat polarizing, but were not afraid to do their own unique type of play by play which differentiated them and made them memorable personalities. You wanted to listed to hear their spin on things. Usually would just turn down the volume on Cubs TV broadcasts because the bland spin Len and JD put on the game makes a tedious Cubs game featuring 10 plus strikeouts by Cub hitters less interesting than just watching the game with the sound turned down while texting fellow Cub fans about piss poor at bats by Cub hitters.

I have to say lately JD's become kinda interestin' to listen to.

He has a certain way about him and I do laugh at some of his jokes or phrases. I think it's like anything else, when you been doin' something for a while, it's like ur trapped in a cage and u just start getting weirder to change things up a bit. I feel like his personality has kind of come out a little more recently.

JD used to be very bland and boring when he first came to the Cubs.

I agree. I like JD too. He's gotta a dry sense of humor. He can be funny. Plus I think he knows the game pretty damn well. For an older guy, he's adopted the new metrics and talks about them.

so it turns out that Bob Costas put the word in to the Cubs to see if they were interested in Brennamen.

Dumb Ricketts said no apparently.

Doesn't Brenneman hate the Cubs?

Boog has sucked. Dempster has sucked. I wasn't a big Len fan but he's better than Boogs.

Thom was great when he was w/ the cubs. I wouldn't mind having him back in the booth but we all know it's not going to happen. As a baseball guy he was pretty good and he's 100x better than Boog.

today was the first time i listened to Len on the sox broadcast. I got to say he was much more animated and less vanilla than when he use to do cubs games. like he was let loose and has more freedom to express himself. Eaton's HR call I had to do a double take if that was really Len because he never made a call like that during his cubs tenure.

recall stumbling out of the crowd @ LCD SS in a corner Lolla stage the year Daft Punk played the main stage right after them and running smack into Kasper and Brenly standing on the edge of the crowd, taking in the musical version of a Quentin Tarantino film.

I thought Kasper was at his best with Brenly. Together they could drift into broadcast sominex from time to time; which isn't the worst thing for baseball broadcasters.

Yeah, I've never cared for Deshaies. He feels like even more of a generic hired gun than Len or Bob did.
