Caratini had been playing very well, and was in a position to challenge Contreras for more playing time.

They need to trade for Blake Swihart from the Red Sox. The Red Sox have an extra catcher in Sandy Leon stashed in AAA, and they are unwilling to just release Swihart I guess because he's a former first round pick. Send them Underwood and a couple of lottery tickets and get it done. Swihart is the type of utility guy that Joe likes, he can play six positions poorly.

Welcome home, Wellington Castillo.

He'd probably cost no more than the salary relief. He is a veteran with playoff experience. He's available immediately and the Ricketts can save money on the airfare.

Yeah, but Contreras fell off a cliff in the second half last year while starting at catcher (had to look up the number to make sure) 123 times. I think the hope was that Caratini would be able to pick up a few more starts and keep that from happening again.
